There aren't any freeware converters or codecs for this type of file (the RCA .voc file, not the soundblaster version)so, if like me, you were looking for something that would easily enable you to email files, look for something that records in .mp3 or .wav.

The hardware itself works as expected. Two button pushes to record, two more to turn off - 396 recordings supported. The biggest downside is the default software requires you to select and convert EACH recording over to mp3 (or an exe format). This is fine if you intend to use the device for several lengthy recordings (ie: one hour each), but if you plan on hundreds of 15 second recordings, this is a pain. You cannot copy the recordings directly as they are encoded as *.voc files with the G.729A codec. I have tried to find a free converter for this standard under Windows but have been unsuccessful. I think I might be able to write a script to take care of it in linux but for most users this would be a unacceptable. Spend the extra few dollars for direct mp3 downloading on another device.

I bought this recorder for use in my college classes. It did not last two semesters! I am unable to transfer 50% of the files to my computer using their Digital Voice Manager software. I get an error message that says there is a 0 value. For the most part I am able to listen to the corrupted file on the recorder. However, I'm not sure how much of the recording I am able to retrieve. For example, on a 3 hour recording, I was able to hear all but the last 30 minutes of the lecture. It was caught in a loop. I'm now having to buy a new recorder since this one is unreliable!

The reliability and stability of this product is low. The software crashes constantly and the recorder freezes up during use. The only way I found to get it going again was to remove the batteries, but guess what? That causes all your files to disappear. And forget calling customer service. It's useless. DO NOT PUT AN IMPORTANT RECORDING ON THIS DEVICE. You may lose it. Buy a more reliable recorder. RCA makes crap.

I ue this recorder regularly at work as an investigator. It has excellent pickup and voice quality. Being able to record hours of conversations then having the ability to plug the inline directly into my lap top is a very handy feature. The date and time stamp and other features are easy to set up and overall the features are easy to use. The lock feature prevents accidental activation. It is compact and light weight and will not burden you when travelling. I was surprised how clear conversations were when the recorder was placed in the center of the table and conversation was made at normal levels.

Works pretty well. I use it to record lectures during class. I sit at the back of a classroom full of 150 students, and yet it picks up my professors' voices just fine (though, when you set it on a desk and happen to tap a pencil next to it, the playback can be quite painful). Not recording in mp3 format is a bummer, and I'm too lazy to go through the process of converting the files, but if you can live through that then I'd say it's a worthwhile purchase. I'd definitely buy it again. It's small and discrete, fits in my pocket, and could pass for an odd looking music player.

Very nice, includes an application to play the VOC file or convert it to MP3. Just have to look on the "drive" that shows up when you connect the recorder to the computer.

I bought this after getting tired of some other DVRs being so difficult to reconfigure after battery changes. Why do they make recorders that can't remember the date and time of day for even 15 secs. Haven't they heard of flash memory? Heck, they are using it to record our voices.
This is easier to reset and I like the overall control layout better than the other DVRs. It mimics the old tape based recorders.
The only thing I don't like is that activating record mode doesn't work according to the instructions as I read them. To get it to record when it is in "sleep" mode, you have to press the play button whereupon it will "wake up" and then be ready to accept a record command.
The other thing I don't like is its capacity. 64MB is just not enough for the use I have for it. If a version with more capacity, say 128 MB, is available I would get that. Buy maybe this is enough for you.

I completely agree with Mitchell Llewellyn "Gadget Freak NJ", this little device works great. It does everything including recording (4+) hours in HQ mode AND the amazing included software allows you manipulate your recordings and easily create .wav and .exe files if you need them. Save your money - buy this one.
