5.0 out of 5 stars They have improved
I read the other reviews and had to mention they must have improved. It has a drainage system now at the bottom of the "bag" which also helps support the weight of the bag. Yes, one of the "port holes" came disassembled, but not to where I couldn't get the sponge in place to support the tomatoe plant and prevent dirt from coming out.

I do have to say, you...

I bought 10 of these and even built a structure in my garden to hang them. I also set up automatic watering to them. I followed the instructions very carefully.

They absolutely do not work, and there is a simple reason.

By hanging the planter upside-down, water runs down the stem of the plant and collects right where the stem emerges from the planter. The stem ends up rotting from the pooling water, where in a normal planter it would go away from the plant and also feed the roots.

The plants end up convoluted and congested as they try to turn upward toward the sun. Essentially, the plants try to grow up into themselves and turn into a nasty knot of tangled growth. The planter itself also shields the plant from the sun, particularly when the plant is young.

I ended up hanging fishing weights from the ends of the branches to try to make them grow downward. Fruit was produced ultimately, but the fruits were undersized and subject to rotting from the water dripping down on them from above.

I imagine the company that makes these would say I over-watered, but I adjusted the water as carefully as I could, and still you just can't keep water from dripping down and give the plant enough water. I mean think about it--the roots are where the water is leaving as it drains. I'm willing to bet the roots were a mess as they tried to grow downward to seek the water that destroyed the stem, branches and fruit.

I would certainly not recommend these. If you're going to try them, try just one or two--don't bet your summer's veggies on them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to assemble and use, June 9, 2007
By E. A. Lovitt "starmoth" (Gladwin, MI USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The metal parts of the tomato tree are quite brittle, and even though we followed instructions and used a rubber mallet when fitting together the lower portion of the tree, a piece of metal broke away from the assembly holding the legs in place.

Another problem showed up when I was trying to fit my tomato plants through the portholes--the plastic ring that fits around the portholes is cheaply made and kept falling into two parts as I was trying to pass my tomato root balls through the ring. This was extremely frustrating.

Finally, there is no way for water to escape from the plastic bag once you have watered your tomatoes. Watering has to be done very carefully to avoid rotting out the roots. Even cheap plastic pots from chain stores have drainage holes, so you'd think a relatively expensive product like this tomato tree would come equipped with them. No, it's 'poke your own.'

I had assumed from looking at the Tomato Tree in the catalogue that the bag could be rotated, so different plants could get the most sun. Not so. You will have to rotate the whole unit in order to ensure that your tomato plants get equal time in the sun.

1.0 out of 5 stars save your $$$$...., December 7, 2007
By papermoon (Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
First off, I'm a very experienced gardener so I thought I would give this a try. Bad decision. The vines grow upward so when the plants mature the weight just flops them over breaking them. Because you grow tomatoes in full sun, the plastic bag dries out incredibly fast and also burns the roots. I tried this two seasons and had the same poor results both years. It's a novelty idea and just doesn't work. Take my advice and save your $$$$$$$$$$$.

I do have to say, you need to remove your tomato plants from the soil they come packed in...loosen the roots up so it will fit through the holes. No big deal really. It has been 1 week and so far my tomato plants are growing strong and hardy. Also I am watering every day, careful to not drown them.

Thus far, it is very functional and efficient.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not work., March 27, 2008
I planted hot peppers in this, with fertilizer and watering regularly... the peppers that normally reach 3 or 4 inches were not even an inch long when they ripened. Not enough root space. Don't even get me started on the topsy turvey... let's just say plastic bags promote mold!

1.0 out of 5 stars Tomato tree a flop!, June 12, 2009
By L. Bicanich (Illinois) - See all my reviews

I had high hopes for this product as I was tired of worms & bugs ruining my tomatoes each year. I put it together and filled with potting soil and water as directed. My tomato plants really took off and looked great but instead of growing down as the pictures show, they grew up toward the sun...until they got too heavy and flopped down and broke the stems. It's a great idea, but they didn't account for the plants natural tendency to grow up toward the sun. It is definitely not worth the money!

3.0 out of 5 stars works okay but, February 21, 2010

I found that the planter worked just fine but I only got one season out of the bag and it's shot. At this point I haven't found a replacement for it. My tomatoes grew great and the best thing is no weeds and no ants.

1.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, but dissapointing, September 11, 2009
I bought one this year, and was disappointed with the results. The fruits were undersized and had a lot of blossom end rot. They don't tell you that you'll have to water more than once a day to keep the plants alive. I bought an inexpensive drip irrigation and a not-so-inexpensive timer to solve this problem.

Four months later, the bag split. Since it only has a 30 day guarantee, they would not replace the bag.

So, basically, it was a $60 (with shipping) failure. Can't recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars recall, May 22, 2008
I bought this on qvc and was later called and told that there was a re-call as it would fall over. My husband put the pole in an old flag pole hole and it works. Would check re-call out as they say it falls over.

1.0 out of 5 stars Needs work, April 29, 2008
By Tedster "Ewolfman" (Tracy, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This product was really disappointing for the price. It was not easy to put together and I thought the construction was really "chintzy". My tomatoes seem to be surviving in spite of this tomato tree so we'll see what the season beholds. Also, it is too tall for the average person to water after it is set up.
