5.0 out of 5 stars I like this filter!
This filter actually 'came with' a used aquarium I got from a garage sale...so I have no idea how old it is...but it works great! It is quiet, which is always a plus, and it is versatile. There are 4 trays, with two chambers each, in which to mix and match filter media. I am able to tailer mine to the strong needs of my turtle. Although the filter has a 100 gallon tank...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great filter for fish
I understand the phrase if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything at all, so i'm going to try to make this review with just the facts and not opinions.

The filter now lasts me about 6 months between cleaning which is great for my turtle tank. Cleaning it is a breeze just take the media out, rinse it, and replace the filters that you can buy...

5.0 out of 5 stars I like this filter!, December 29, 2008

This filter actually 'came with' a used aquarium I got from a garage sale...so I have no idea how old it is...but it works great! It is quiet, which is always a plus, and it is versatile. There are 4 trays, with two chambers each, in which to mix and match filter media. I am able to tailer mine to the strong needs of my turtle. Although the filter has a 100 gallon tank capacity, I am saving up for a second one on my 90 gallon tank...there is no such thing as over-filtering when it comes to turtles and I just love this fluval.

Initial set up is a bit overwhelming, but the directions are very clear. Once it is set up, maitenance is fairly easy. It's a bit bulky to haul to the sink to change out the media...but that's to be expected from something this size. I also have trouble getting the lid off and basically have to use a screwdriver as a lever...but honestly, I don't mind...I would rather have it be snug and leak proof than easy to remove!

The manual has a section that talks about the various components of filtering which can be helpful when deciding what to put where in your filter. It wasn't helpful to me. But this is probably the most widely used type of filter and a visit to any turtle or fish keeping community on the internet will yield plenty of tips and advice on setting up media that is most effective for your aquarium community.

4.0 out of 5 stars works great, constructions a little confusing., April 19, 2010

First, let me inform everyone who purchases this that the seal is in a separate bag! It's not already installed, you must install it yourself. I, following the directions didn't see any step where it asked for installation of the seal and I had a very wet floor.

That aside, as soon as I got it working I was quite impressed. It filters very well and is extremely quiet. So far this is the best aquarium filter I've had.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power, Amazing Filter that works perfectly for someone new to fish tanks, June 21, 2008
This review is from: Hagen Fluval 405 Multi Stage Filter (Misc.)
The fish store guy talked me into spending a little more money than I was intending on this canister filter but I am very happy he did. This tank is virtually maintenance free. I am a little lazier than I should be cleaning the tank but this filter has kept the fish happy for going on a year. Cleaning the filter is actually quick and easy when I do get around to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparkling Clear, May 7, 2009
This review is from: Hagen Fluval 405 Multi Stage Filter (Misc.)
Length:: 0:24 Mins

This canister filter took me about an hour to assemble.

I was told by the pet store manager that the water would be crystal clear in one day. Mine took a few days to become sparkling clear.

There are small particles of debris on the floor of the tank, but that suctions out easily with siphoning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great filter for fish, December 14, 2008

I understand the phrase if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything at all, so i'm going to try to make this review with just the facts and not opinions.

The filter now lasts me about 6 months between cleaning which is great for my turtle tank. Cleaning it is a breeze just take the media out, rinse it, and replace the filters that you can buy for a very good price- not from the pet store but from ebay. I've never had a problem with the suction unless it gets debris in it and until recently started up without a problem.

I guess it's getting old now (maybe about 3 years) but the plastic parts it is made with are starting to break. The top no longer closes watertightand leaks water (probably need a new O-ring), the propeller part has broken so now makes a horrible rattle when it spins (haven't figured out which part is actually broken yet). And the plastic suction device has snapped in half rendering it usesless, but it was because for some reason the suction cup wasn't suctioning down any water. I think this device is past it's prime but instead of buying a new I'm going to buy a different brand.

I think this filter woiuld be great if you house fish because you probably have to clean the filter alot less since they aren't nearly as messy as turtles.
