The Big John seat makes it much easier for big men to seat themselves with more comfort and the added height makes it easier to arise after "taking care of business". It is a much larger seat than I expected. It extends quite a bit beyond the sides of the bowl, but that's not a problem unless your toilet is VERY close to a wall. Although the lid will stay upright...

True to its name ... it's BIG!
The construction of the Big John toilet seat is top notch. Installation took 5 mins. True to it's advertising, once installed this seat does not shift, slide, or wiggle when sitting on it. Having said that, please realize that this seat is HUGE, and sits HIGH on the toilet. The seat extends over the sides of the bowl, making your toilet look "top heavy" It's not a very...

The Big John seat makes it much easier for big men to seat themselves with more comfort and the added height makes it easier to arise after "taking care of business". It is a much larger seat than I expected. It extends quite a bit beyond the sides of the bowl, but that's not a problem unless your toilet is VERY close to a wall. Although the lid will stay upright without holding it, the seat itself will not and it is MUCH HEAVIER than the standard toilet seat. The installation instructions are pretty good, but the positioning of the two connectors could use a little more detailed description to distinguish right from left (as facing the seat or from the users's seated position). The cost from Amazon was less than anywhere else I looked.

I am very satisfied with the product, but some people would need to be aware that "Big John" is going to be a higher seat than commercially available toilet seats. For someone with short legs (ie less than 5 feet tall) this puts an added presure on your legs when seated. This added presure cuts off blood circulation causing your legs to "fall asleep."

Toilet seats twist and the hinges break, not this one. It's built like a tank. It's a bit wider than a conventional seat, and guest's in our house are usually surprised, but a few minutes later they leave the bathroom with a smile.

Best Seat Ever, January 20, 2009
It was funny whaen I first put it in and I got a few comments on it that it was huge, but once they had to sit on it, they where converts, in fact some people say " oh my God where did you get that seat!" brother in law will wait to sit on what he calls the most comfortable bathroom ever and spend on average 15-20 minute on it. My original toilet was designed a bit lower than normal, so the added height was welcomed. The hardware is solid, and it will not move around like other seats, this is one where if a component breaks, which I cannot see how, is easily replacable. Can not say enough about this seat, the actual opening is the same size as most seats, so kids wont fall through, its just designed right. well worththe money.

Very sturdy, July 8, 2008

This seat was very easy to install and is just as advertised. It is incredibly sturdy and it does not shift or move at all.
The only downside is that the seat is quite thick so shorter people may be less comfortable. I'm 5'10 and have a slightly higher toilet than normal to begin with. My feet barely touch the ground with the addition of the Big John. This would be less of an issue for someone with a regular height toilet.

Finally an adult-sized toilet seat, December 7, 2009
All toilets are a compromise between accomodating both adults and children. They're a little too big for small children and too small for adults. Personally, I don't like to feel like I'm squating on an undersized toilet seat. Big john raises the height at least 2"-3" above standard seats. As a comparison, if you ever use a public restromm that has a handicap toilet, it's about that height. That means that when an average-sized adult sits down, their knees are bent at a 90 degree angle. This is much more comfortable.
OK, you may be asking why 4 stars and not 5. Width is the answer. This thing is built for a wide load. I mean like 600 pounds wide. Yes, it is a Big John but the width is more like a Humongous John. The hole in the middle is so big that you don't get the full cheek support you'd get if it was narrower.
To my fellow reviewer who had problems identifying the right and left hinge bolts: It clearly says that "when facing the toilet left is on the left and right is on the right". RTFM my friend -- it's only one page. Total replacement time < 10 minutes.

The Big John Toilet Seat is great for everyone... the able-bodied, disabled, elderly, and kids. The hole is the same size as a standard toilet seat, it is the ring of the seat and the cover that is larger and thicker... the comfort is amazing. Nothing worse than a little, flimsy toilet seat that slides all over the bowl... this seat is SOLID and stays in place.
Someone mentioned that the seat would not stay up on it's own. This depends both on the design of the toilet and the mounting of this toilet seat... but for most people this won't be an issue. Someone else mentioned that thickness of the Big John lifted their feet off the floor while seated... for average height adults this won't be a problem, it will be slightly lower than an ADA compliant toilet for the disabled.
This is simply the most comfortable & durable toilet seat on the market. I am considering buying 4 more for my home and for my parent's home.

The frequently-used bathroom in my house had seen three different toilet seats in less than three years--the seat that came with the house got moldy too easily, the hardware holding the seat in place broke on the second one, and the seat itself broke on the cheapo third seat. I was getting sick of it and wanted a really sturdy seat that I would never have to replace again.
I'm pretty sure I found it.
I did have a problem installing it. I couldn't get one of the plastic nuts to screw onto one of the hinges. Thinking I might have a defective hinge, I called customer service. The man I spoke to was very helpful and, using a crescent wrench, a pair of pliers, and a good half hour of intense physical effort, I did manage to install the seat. It is a really big seat, though, I must say. My bathroom door barely clears the toilet anymore, so if you have a smallish bathroom like I do, you may want to check that before you tighten the nuts.
At first I thought the seat looked weird and I wasn't sure I liked it. I agree with the reviewer who mentioned that it's not good for shorter folks--I am about 5'7", and I think if I were a couple of inches shorter, I might not be comfortable using this as my primary seat. I disagree with the reviewer who said that the seat does not stay up on its own--both my lid and my seat stay in the upright position just fine.
And it's super comfortable. I mean, really, really comfortable. I don't normally take any reading material with me to the bathroom, but with this seat, I'd consider it! After my boyfriend had the opportunity to try it out, I asked him what he thought, and he said, "Now I know why they call it a throne!" So bottom line, if you don't mind having an obviously non-standard toilet seat and you're over 5'4" and you don't mind spending more for a superior product, get this seat!

Having said that, please realize that this seat is HUGE, and sits HIGH on the toilet. The seat extends over the sides of the bowl, making your toilet look "top heavy" It's not a very attractive appearance. Also, those who like to co-ordinate their bathrooms with matching rugs and toilet seat covers will have to forego the toilet seat cover .... unless some company is specifically making a cover for this seat. Overall, once installed your toilet has the appearance of being set up for a handicapped person ... it's very medicinal looking. As i said earlier this toilet seat sits HIGH on the toilet, so any person 5' 7" or smaller will have their feet dangling and not touching the floor. I am 5' 7" and I have to stretch my toes down in order to touch the floor. This makes for a very uncomfortable position .... the best way i can describe it is like sitting on an innertube. (those of you who have been to typhoon lagoon and rode the innertube down lazy river will know the feeling) Wiping yourself becomes a problem because your feet don't touch the ground for support, so you try to wipe and balance at the same time...and because the seat sits so high ... expect some splasing as you do your duty. I would not recommend this product unless you are over 6' tall, don't care about the appearance of your bathroom, or are so obese that you cannot sit on a regular toilet seat.
