3.0 out of 5 stars McCulloch 10" electric pole saw
I bought this saw from Amazon to cut some split and hanging branches off some snow storm damaged trees around my house.
It worked very well for what it was designed and I was able to cut some branches that were up to 6" in diameter. The only thing I did not like was the way the pole attached to the saw. You have to remove 4 phillips head screws to remove the 2 piece...

The saw comes detached from the pole in the same box. I needed to use it as a pole saw so I attached the saw to the pole with the four philips head screws provided. It took me about 10-15 minutes by myself, but it would be much quicker and eaiser if you have a helper.
I filled the chain oiler with oil and pumped it as stated in the directions but it didn't pump any oil out onto the chain. I have a small oil can and just manually put a drop or two on the bar before cutting each branch as desired in the directions. I wanted to use the thing and not wait another week or so for another one.
I trimmed the branches up 17 fir trees in one day to a height of about 12-14 feet high. The pole saw is about 10 feet plus your height is approxamately how high one can reach limbs. I'm an older guy but was able to do this because the pole saw works very fast and most of the branches I was cutting were under 3 1/2 inches in diameter. The motor has adaquate power and did not slow down even on the larger branches I cut.
I would not recommend using the saw separatly from the pole as it lacks safty features of the gas powered ones. So I just shortened the poles length to its shortest setting and cut the downed limbs that way.
I really like this unit and would recommened it to anyone. For the price it is hard to beat.
It may require a long extenion cord to reach your trees but like most electric tools, it requires no preperation before storage and it will be ready when you are for the next use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy Pole Saw - Better than manual sawing!, July 20, 2008

I purchased this electric pole/chain saw after once again using my manual pole saw/pruner. Having several mature maples surrounding my house, there are always a few branches which need to be pruned. Well, a pole saw is something which the average homeowner may use once a year [as opposed to those who make their living trimming trees]. Here's the glitch with a manual pole saw [which is remedied with this electric chain saw] -- sawing back and forth for five minutes with your arms overhead makes for some sore shoulders and upper back within the next two days! About this saw: Made by a reliable chain saw company; Easy to use; Doesn't require two-cycle mix and therefore you don't fret over fouled spark plugs; and best yet, does not require that back and forth arm/shoulder motion of my manual saw! With that said, it is still a pole saw -- cutting limbs way over your head with a chain saw on the end of a pole can be tiring too. Even then, I'd recommend this first even to a new homeowner with tall trees. Always consider safety. If you have never operated a chain saw before, get some advice from someone who has -- they are not foolproof! And, while seemingly too simple to say, READ the safety instructions! You just might need the reminder before a limb knocks you in the head! I have a McCulloch chain saw which I have used for years, so have experience with using a chain saw. This is the first pole chain saw I have owned, and I really like it! One word of caution -- When you fill it with oil [bar & chain oil] for the chain, it will leak out unless you store the saw with the blade pointing upward. Looking for a great alternative to the manual pole saw? Look no further! This is a well made product for any homeowner.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my best purchases ever, May 18, 2009

This is one of the best tools I've ever purchased. I wanted a pole saw that wasn't a commercial tool but could handle a lot of work. I've trimmed numerous trees in my yard and even removed an established tree with a 12" trunk with ease. What used to take me days, takes me hours. The saw is easy to operate and performs well. I've had no problems with the chain as many people comment with other saws. I will agree that it is a bit awkward to reach some of the high branches due to the weight of the saw being at the far end of the pole. Also, when you want to switch between just the chain saw and the pole saw, it takes a few minutes to take apart and put together. However, these minor inconveniences are worth the time and effort savings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good tool, June 9, 2009

I have had some dead limbs on a large oak that I have wanted to remove for a couple of years. They were just too high and big to reach and cut with my manual pole pruner and operating the pole pruner from a ladder is really hard. Starting a gas powered chain saw from a ladder is near impossible and very dangerous. I thought about hiring it done but the cost doing that was more than I wanted to pay and I am a real do it myself type. I saw this tool and figured that it would probably do the job. It did - beyond my expectations. It is very controllable, has plenty of power and the ability to use it without the pole is a nice feature. The manual oiler, push the cap, worked fine although it is easy to overoil. It is also easy to not close the cap tightly. This is a well made tool that functions as advertised. As with all of the pole saws the saw end is a bit weighty fully extended and the advertised reach is including your reach. A good friend once told me to never buy a cheap tool because they last forever and never satisfy. I would rank this saw as a really good tool.

Item works as decribed. 10" chain saw is great for light use with or without the pole. It can get a little heavy if used for long periods so take a break once in a while. The main downside is that attaching to or removing the saw from the pole is awkward and time consuming. Overall, well worth the money.

I found this pole saw to be a little heavy, especially at full extension. I needed to take a short break after cutting two or three limbs with the saw fully extended. However, I would recommend to nearly anyone because it is so veratile and cuts quickly. Mounting and dis-mounting the saw from the pole is easy, and takes less than 5 minute. Using the saw without the pole is a pleasure. It seems to be well designed and well made, so I expect it to last. Time will tell. I would buy it again.

I bought this saw from Amazon to cut some split and hanging branches off some snow storm damaged trees around my house.
It worked very well for what it was designed and I was able to cut some branches that were up to 6" in diameter. The only thing I did not like was the way the pole attached to the saw. You have to remove 4 phillips head screws to remove the 2 piece pole clamping mechanism from the saw. This is OK if you intend to leave the saw on the pole all the time, but taking it off and on between working on the tree and then on the ground is a PITA, especially since the screws can be dropped and lost in the grass.
It would have been a little easier if the two piece attachment was hinged on one side, so there were only 2 screws to remove, or even better, a hinge on one side and wing nut screws on the other side, so you didn't have to carry a screwdriver with you.
Otherwise it does the job.

It's a chainsaw on a pole. Great concept. The chainsaw itself is very good for it's size. No complaints there. And I have to admit it's reasonably priced and helped me do a job that would have been a real bear without it. I don't even mind the weight of it. I was expecting that. Yes, it's hard work but that just comes with the territory when you're trying to work with something as heavy as a chainsaw on the end of a ten foot pole.

But... the way the pole adjusts is just flat out STUPID! It has a friction lock collar that you have to tighten and loosen. If you tighten it hard enough so that the saw doesn't turn over (twist) on the end of the pole, then you need channel locks to loosen it again. If you try not to tighten it so much so that it can be loosened by hand, then your chain saw moves on the end of the pole, creating a dangerous condition. On top of that, the thing is quite strongly spring loaded so that you have to pull the two pole pieces apart at the same time you lock the friction collar. It takes quite a bit of strength to pull the pole apart to it's longest position. Let's review... two hands to pull pole apart, one hand to keep pole from twisting, one hand to turn the collar. Yes, adjusting the pole is basically a two-person job! I somehow managed to do it by myself, but not without a great deal of difficulty. Why spring loaded? It doesn't make sense and is totally unnecessary! It's just a poor design.

I would strongly recommend the manufacturer scrap the spring loading and the friction collar and use either a pin system or a locking clamp system for adjusting the pole. If I find time, I may take mine apart and see if I can retrofit it to a better system. Even with the poorly functioning pole, I would buy this again because it helped me do a job that would have been extremely difficult without it.

I used this saw to cut both wet and dry tree branches up to 10" thick with no problems. The saw easily attaches/detaches from the pole so that you can use it according to your preferences. Also, it is light and very powerful - I did not experience any stalling.

Read the user manual that comes with it, and use the appropriate chain saw oil and you will not have any problems with this chain saw. This is a great tool for any homeowner with trees around the property and I strongly reccomend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Work, March 29, 2010

This review is from: McCulloch MCP1510 10-Inch 1.5 HP Electric Pole Saw with Removable 10-Foot Pole (Lawn & Patio)
Assembly: Some have complained about attaching the saw. My personal experience is this is a non issue. Although a quick disconnect would have been better it's nice knowing that it won't fall off while working overhead. Just don't plan on switching back and forth without getting a headache.

Use: I found the unit to be a bit on the heavy side. Remember the complete saw is on the end of the pole. So with the pole fully extended, holding it at a 45 degree (or less) angle proves to be a bit strenuous. The weight helps hold the saw on the limb but after the cut you find yourself busy trying to hold the saw up.

The Cut: Works very well cutting everything I threw at it. Makes quick work of most limbs. The motor is plenty strong enough and not as loud as I thought it would be. The teeth on the saw are different from the gas saws I own. Every third link has a cutting tooth instead of every link. Because of this (I think)the saw jumps a bit during cuts and makes a 'sloppy' cut. Although, like I said before, it cuts well.

Complaints: The saw worked fine but the pole extension (really just a fancy extension cord) wouldn't run the saw. I opened up the handle and found one of the wires disconnected from the switch. The cord on the inside is a spiral (like old phones or hair dryer) which makes extending the pole difficult. It also adds strain to the wire connection. This whole assembly is rather 'cheap'. After I fixed it (Yes Amazon, I saved you the return process) I double checked the other connections, loose as well! I also don't like the plugs on the unit. It has some 'protective' sleeve which makes it hard plugging in (at least my own) extension cords. Also, the cord on the saw is a little short so you can't knot the cords together. So with that, the saw unplugged itself a few times while in use. Hassle.
Overall: It works well, does what it's supposed to do. And aside from complaints already stated, not a bad unit for the price. A little lighter would have been better. Would recommend to others with cautions.
