4.0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for young ones, 5 for older kids
I was searching for a game that my 4 year old can play on the Wii, since most of the popular games are aimed at older players. The draw was that the Wii remote can be used to steer the car like a steering wheel, rather than using the nunchuk. Nunchuk steering is a little tricky. Setting up to steer with the remote is not obvious. The sequence is the following:...

Games: Racing and tip the tractors. Not sure what else since we got too frustrated with it to continue playing anymore. Oversteering in racing is difficult at best to try and control. Tractor tipping game is hard to control direction you are going also. 5-yr-old and 9-yr old don't bother with this game at all anymore despite the characters being just like the ones in...

The sequence is the following:
(1) plug in the nunchuk
(2) main menu
(3) options
(4) player one/two controls. Control settings are shown.
(5) choose "preset 2".
From then on, that remote has to be held sideways, and the nunchuk can be disconnected.

The difficulty for young kids is that the accelerator is all or nothing (e.g. you can't have the pedal half-way down). so, it's a little tricky for them to learn how to go at a reasonable speed that allows steering accuracy. But the game is very forgiving as crashing into things does not do major damage, other than time lost in recovering.

We've noticed weirdness where plants protrude thru cars and such. But not a major issue. The game is fun for older kids. But this is not the game for younger players.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great game!, November 26, 2007

I am an "older" gamer. I got back to gaming because of Pac Man World and Crash Team Racing.

I thought CTR was one of the greatest games ever. I have tried to find simialr games since and nothing came close until Cars - Maternational!

You drive around the main town going from race to race and mini games. Unclocking new races and courses as you progress.

The mini games that I have played so far are:
1. a game of tag - reminds me of Smugglers Run
2. relay races - you drive three different cars during a race.
3. match the beat. you have to hit the keys on the controllers to a beat to earn a flag.
4. Dont run out of gas - you have to race around the track three times without runing out gas. there are gas tangs spread out and you have to hit the right ones.

The only thing missing is there is no crates to crash to get new powerups and such but it works well without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding DS Racing Title for Fans of the Film, November 4, 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cars: Mater-National (Video Game)
If you own a DS and enjoyed the movie Cars, don't hesitate to buy this game. Unlike the minigame collection that formed the DS version of the first Cars game, DS Maternational is everything you'd want from a DS Cars game: Fast, fun racing with all the humor and personality of the film. It lacks the virtual-Radiator Springs world to drive around that forms the hub of the console versions, but the racing is smooth and well-done.

This is, hands-down, the 2nd most enjoyable racer on the DS (after Mario Kart.)

The game delivers a fully animated opening cinema (later cinemas from the console versions are presented as slide shows), a solid 3D racing game engine, voice acting for all characters during races (they're a very talkative bunch!) and imaginative tracks with hidden shortcuts that trigger in-race special events.

You begin with a choice of 2 racers (Lightning and Mater), unlocking more characters as you discover secret routes. Unlockable cars include Sheriff, Doc, Sarge, Flo, Lizzie and several others.

So -- for any Cars fans out there wondering whether or not this one's worth a purchase, wonder no longer: This game's a blast.

I purchased the first Cars game for the Wii and with the cheat codes it was a great game, once you got to access all levels. The only problem with the last one was it was so hard to steer. They have fixed the problem with Mater National by letting you steer with the nunchuck. They have thrown in fun characters like Mike & Sully from monsters Inc (seen at the end of cars in Cars form) and added a few new fun mini games and races that were not in the first. Cheat codes are readily available on line for this one as well. Overall both games I'd rate the same for fun, this one is a drop higher b/c younger ones will find it easier to play.

We bought this game thinking it would be a good game for an entire family--fun for all ages, like many of the other Disney games--but it seems to be very geared for younger kids. (Something that is sorely needed in PS3 gaming... so this isn't a complaint...)
It's fun, and has great characters, etc--so if you have young kids, go for it. :)

I ordered this game for my daughter who is 8 and my son who is 4 and they really like this game. It is a little difficult for my son but he still loves to play this game all the time and is getting better each time he plays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun "Cars" game for kids and parents alike, May 22, 2008
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cars: Mater-National Championship (Video Game)
I've had this game for about a month now. I haven't played it all the way through, but I've had a good time with the races I've done. Basically, the game has a story mode where you play as Lightning McQueen (it's set in the time period after the movie) and you engage in various races for different reasons. You drive around the town and area of Radiator Springs and as you go you find places that have races for you to do.

The bottom line here are the races. I've played a lot of racing games from Gran Turismo to Need for Speed and I actually found this to be challenging. If fact, I was pretty angry at first that I didn't immediately start beating this "kid's game!" Of course, I started off in the "Champion Mode" because it was a "kid's game." But, once I learned the race course, I was able to place first. (I know, you're really impressed.)

My daughter is almost five and she likes the game but is just a bit too young to really be able to play. So, she gets frustrated. But, she still likes trying to play it. The kids love the Pixar characters so that's fun.

The game has a lot to recommend. The racing is fun. The graphics are really great, very sharp and clean. There are cute things like the cars talk to each other when they're racing, like taunting each other as they pass. Mater is fun to drive (in arcade mode, for example) because his tow cable whips around when he catches air as if it were a tail (remaining true to the movie, too, if I remember correctly).

So, it's a fun game. Play it with your kids. Unlike many games based on movies it appears that they were actually interested in making a good racing game for young ones instead of simply cashing in on the name-recognition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game for All Ages, May 14, 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Cars: Mater-National (Video Game)
This is a great game. My kids love it. Even my husband and I have played it a few times. Best of all, it 's safe to play for any child (as long as they can hold the paddle). No language, guns, bombs, explosions, sensuality, or killing. Even the players don't die. Just a good old fashioned racing game with some good clean fun thrown in. I especially like the competitive race with Mike and Sully (Monsters,Inc). It was delivered just in time for christmas, so we had fun playing it through the winter.
