I read reviews on this product and was curious whether it would work for me. It does. I have found that the more saliva I use, the easier it is to read the results. One just has to remember that the slide must be completely dry in order to work. Work with the sight adjustment until you see something. The non-fertile time looks like a messy bunch of dots, however you will definitely know when you see the ferning pattern. I have cleaned the slide by water and gently dabbing (not rubbing) a softer towel over the lens, no scratching.

I am a microbiologist, so I love anything remotely related to science and microscopes. This device is worth the money.

I think those who have trouble seeing this aren't using it properly. Be sure you remove the entire lense (the WHOLE black piece) without unscrewing it. Just pull it straight out. When it is removed properly, you will be able to see the empty container and the little green light inside. The saliva goes on the flat, uncupped, interior end closest to the light. To clean, just run the lense piece under warm water and let air dry until next use. You can check for lint or water residue by holding it up to a regular light.

I bought this to try to get pregnant. Quite simple to use, easy to clean, easy to read results. You need about five minutes to take this test. Every morning you put a dab of saliva (making sure the saliva has no bubbles) on the microscope and let it dry. Pop the scope back into the lens and press the light. You can immediately see a fernlike pattern if you are ovulating. I am happy to report I conceived the second month I was using this product.

Edit 10/4/12
I used this again for my third child. Worked like a charm to predict ovulation. One really amazing thing I tried this time. I read that certain hormones responsible for the ferning pattern (ovulating hormones I think it is a LH surge) are also the same that remain consistent if your body is carrying a fertilized egg. Every morning after the day I ovulated (and believed I may be pregnant) I used the test to see if the ferning pattern was somewhat visible (not a total ferning, but something in between) after 2 weeks of this, I was very confident I was pregnant. Sure enough,I confirmed it with a pregnancy test!

I love this! took me a few days to realize what I was looking at, but it does exactly what it says. I had partial ferning about 5 days before ovulation and then full ferning the 3-4 days leading up to ovulation. Gives you a lot more notice than an OPK test. Also it's fun to use & the ferning looks really cool. I found that using my saliva first thing in the morning didn't work well. I had to wait a few hours (it does say to wait awhile after eating/drinking but I didnt notice any difference no matter how long it had been). Use a LOT of saliva and make sure it drys completely. When I only used a smear of saliva, I couldn't see anything. Edit: Just wanted to add that I like this better than OPK because you don't have to worry about urine dilution. I drink a ton of water and it's hard to catch a truly positive OPK urine test. Although I still do use those also when I know ovulation is close.

I have learned how to change the batteries in it! After removing it from the outter case and removing the scope lens, Take a pair of tweezers or a toothpick (being careful not to hit the bulb) and push down. And the battery compartment slides right out :)

I bought this microscope a year ago to begin tracking my cycles. I wanted something that would be more environmentally friendly than OPK (urine testers), which are thrown away each month. I had also used a basal thermometer, which I hated.

Pros:
-easy to use, just pull out the lens, lick or spit on it, let it dry, slide it in and press the light to see. You don't have to focus it each time as long as you don't turn the screw between the lens and the magnifier, which will change the focus.
-ferning pattern is obvious and distinctive. I'm not sure what those people are doing who can't get it to work-- it's not that hard.
-no waste

Cons:
-battery and bulb are not replaceable. If either one dies, you're buying a new microscope.
-my case cracked after a few months of use. (It's still usable.)
-PLEASE NOTE, a positive test does NOT necessarily mean that you are ovulating that day or even the next day. You can get a positive ferning test as far as 5 days before ovulation. That's not very accurate. So, please, don't rely on this thing exclusively to track the timing of your ovulation.

After a year I am still using this microscope, but more as a back up. For really tracking my cycles accurately and knowing definitively when I ovulate I rely on disposable OPK sticks that you dip into a cup of urine. (Yes, in spite of the waste they generate.)

I ordered the Fertile Focus Ovulation Microscope on Oct. 19, 2010. I received the microscope a week later and started using it ASAP. I thought I had already ovulated for the month but I wanted to experiment with it so I could get use to how it works. Well, here I am, almost 2 months later and 5 weeks pregnant! This little microscope made my dream a reality. I've been trying to conceive for 2 years and at age 30 I was afraid it may never happen. I plan on giving the microscope to my sister whose also been trying to conceive for 2 years as well. The one thing I would suggest is to use the microscope in the AM and PM. The instructions say to use it in the AM but since a woman's eggs live anywhere from 12-24 hours you may miss ovulation. I believe the day I conceived was the day I used the microscope both in the AM and PM. I had NO ferning in the AM but on a hunch I checked again that night and sure enough, total ferning! I had sex that night and now there's a baby on board! I would recommend this product to anyone and everyone!

This this is really cool. I have been watching for a week with it and have not had a result yet but I'll have on in a few days. Fertile Focus is easy to use. Readings show up clear. This is going to sound icky, but I also was able to put a sample on it after sex, and was able to see my husbands sperm cells! I just got it in my head to try it and it worked. They were whippin' around like crazy. The thing is if you try it ladies, you have to look carefully to see them, even move to lense a little but they'll be there. Please don't judge, hes (my husband) been questioning his fertility for some reason even though we just started trying.
Well, it works. What more can I say.

As a scientist, I was extremely excited to get this little microscope at first. Then I realized a big problem that makes this microscope not reliable to monitor ovulation. Here is why:
The salt (technically sodium chloride) concentration in a woman's saliva increases when she is about to ovulate. When the concentration is high enough, it will form massive fern crystal pattern on the microscope --- that is what we see. The problem is: when a saliva drop dries on the microscope, it is uneven. So there is always this final tiny bit of saliva with very concentrated salt in there, and that is where we will always see the fern pattern even when the overall salt concentration is low in the saliva to begin with. That is why at times when it cannot possibly be ovulation, we can still see some fern patterns along the edge of the microscope, where the saliva dries the final drop.
Now, how to make that to work properly? The answer is to use the same amount of saliva for every test and only look at the central area of the microscope, because the saliva drops typically dry at the edge.
Overall, I find it interesting, but would not solely rely on this method to predict the ovulation because the results can be artificial for the reasons above.

I LOVED this little device. I ordered it on the Aug 6th, shipping was great- came sooner than it was supposed to. Inside it came with a cute little bag of "baby dust".. something little but so thoughtful... love companies that do little things like that, makes a difference.
I used it as instructed, every morning. 2 days ago I started seeing the partial ferning, pretty cool seeing the designs it makes. I know its pretty accurate, as the opk is becoming positive now too. I got up this morning, anxious to see the results. ..
THE LIGHT WONT COME ON.
I know the batteries are replaceable, as another reviewer had posted how to do it. But for it to suddenly stop? Doesn't seem to be the batteries, believe the bulb might have burned out. It stays on my headboard, so it hasn't been jiggled around any. I immediately emailed seller, if they exchange the product Ill give the device the 5 stars it deserves, in hopes I just have a faulty one. But if it only lasts a week or two... product isn't worth more than a star.
So disappointed. .. in a crucial part of my testing!

UPDATE-
Within 15 minutes of emailing the company they emailed me back. Im VERY impressed! Heres what they said-
