Great doll for the right age.
After reading the bad reviews this doll received I felt I had to add my own. Our 4 1/2 year old loves this doll. Yes you do have to wait until McKayla is done talking or moving to interact with her but this just re-enforces taking turns when speaking. She does have a specific design for play but there are lots of variations to play whether it be guessing animal sounds,...

would be good for an older child
When playing with this doll you have to be very specific and use EXACTLY the words she will understand, and for my 4 year old this was very difficult. Also, for her to recognize her toys they have to be directly in front of the eyes and 8-12 inches away while holding in the button on the toy...which was too complex for my daughter. For the doll to understand you when...

After reading the bad reviews this doll received I felt I had to add my own. Our 4 1/2 year old loves this doll. Yes you do have to wait until McKayla is done talking or moving to interact with her but this just re-enforces taking turns when speaking. She does have a specific design for play but there are lots of variations to play whether it be guessing animal sounds, silly faces, tracking her toys, spoon or bottle. People have complained about having to yell at the doll in order for it to hear them. We have found that if you talk clearly and try to avoid other noises in the room it works just fine. Overall this doll is very fun and interactive but you have to decide if it fits with your child. They have to be old enough to understand how she works and not to get frustrated while trying to figure her out. The only reason for the 4 stars is a battery issue. After 1 day McKayla started saying her batteries were getting tired and she needed to rest. Changed them out with fresh ones and put the old one in other toys and the worked just fine. Perhaps she didn't need new batteries but just needed to sleep. I have emailed the company to hopefully get an answer to this.

Happy purchase, December 6, 2007

I purchased this for my goddaughter. It was one of her first real baby dolls and at first she was very quiet. I guess she just couldn't believe how real this baby seemed. But after a couple of minutes she just couldn't get enough of her. They were actual having little conversations. I'm very pleased with my purchase and it was the right choice for her.

Also, for her to recognize her toys they have to be directly in front of the eyes and 8-12 inches away while holding in the button on the toy...which was too complex for my daughter. For the doll to understand you when talking to it you also have to be in a completely silent room, no TV or older brothers, which never happens in my house...lol! And when the doll speaks, she speaks very quietly and you then have to know the exact words to use to respond to her...it even frustrated me when I was trying to show my daughter how to use the doll. I am going to put the doll away and try again when my daughter is about seven. The doll has a lot of cool features, but it is not easy for a little girl to play with.

Amazing dud, November 6, 2007

My daughter was dying for this toy so we got it for her for her 5th birthday. My daughter is very soft spoken, so when you first open her up, she ask's lot of questions to learn you're voice and how which cry will mean what.. ect. Because my daughter didn't speak loudly enough is started saying "I can't hear you" and out of the blue say mommy love, I hungry, and wouldn't shut up. My poor daughter started stressing out and I turned it off. She hasn't played with it since. Before spending the 79 bucks on mckayla, see if you can try it out first.

Sure am glad i got it on sale., December 26, 2007

This review is from: Amazing Dolls Amazing McKayla Interactive (Toy)
My daughter got this yesterday for Christmas and based on the reviews here i thought it would be OK. It isn't. First, i had to spend an hour going through the instructions and trying to figure out how it worked and what to say when. If you do not give it the correct voice prompts, it doesn't work. And, you better say them LOUD, because apparently McKayla can't hear too well. My daughter is literally yelling the prompts and sometimes has to say them twice. Plus, the doll itself is hard to hear and understand. You must only respond when the doll is not talking or moving, or she won't hear you either. There are so many 'rules' about how to use the doll it is maddening. It is confusing and irritating.
As far as the play value goes- another huge thumbs down. You cannot simply use this doll as just a doll because she keeps talking or crying and you have to figure out the right response. You could turn her off, i suppose, but the instructions tell you not to because it resets her. So basically, you can only do what the doll is designed to do- which is shove a spoon in her mouth or give various responses to her commands (and good luck figuring them out). It is a completely passive toy.
i am really stunned people have recommended this toy.

A little frustrating, January 6, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Amazing Dolls Amazing McKayla Interactive (Toy)
My 5 year daughter purchased this toy with high expectations. She has found this doll to be somewhat frustrating. She has to repeat herself multiple times before the doll responds correctly. This tires my daughter and makes her want to put the doll aside. I definitely would not recommend this doll for a very young child. The doll has many great features, but requires a owner with a lot of patience.

Frustrating for a six year old, July 23, 2008
This review is from: Amazing Dolls Amazing McKayla Interactive (Toy)
I bought this doll for my grand neice who just turned six. The doll started out o.k. but whenever she asks "Where's momma?" before you have a chance to respond she cuts in with "oopsie you can say Mommie's here" When she cries, you have to wait until she stops before you can say the one word phrase that is supposed to find out what's wrong but the doll says "no" and begins to cry again and before you can say another word, she starts with the seven words all over again. After the second try if my g-niece still didn't get it, the doll would start this baby jibberish. This was also true with the games, after playing two guesses the doll started with baby talk and you had to press her "bracelet" to get her back on track. After an hour my niece had more "user friendly" dolls to play with and although she hasn't given up on the doll, I think it could be a little quicker with the learning process so there would actually be more time to play with her.

MCKayla doll is a great buy, January 18, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Amazing Dolls Amazing McKayla Interactive (Toy)
When my daughter "unwrapped" Mckayla on Christmas, she was instantly mesmerized with this life-like doll. From the day she received her, my daughter has wanted McKayla to eat with her at the table, sleep next to her at night, and ride with her in the car. The doll is also a great educational toy because it shows a child how much work a baby can be (be prepared to hear McKayla repeatedly say "dirty diaper," "need mama love" and "I'm hungry." If you are considering purchasing this doll, I'm sure your daughter will love McKayla as much as my daughter does!

We love McKayla!, February 8, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Amazing Dolls Amazing McKayla Interactive (Toy)
McKayla was a birthday gift for my 6 yr old. We have 3 girls and when McKayla is out she is the show! Everyone waits to see what she'll do or ask for next. We have not had any trouble with her not responding, but it is a little aggravating that she always tells you what to ask her. And her responses are a little slow. We mind it as parents, but my 6 yr old says it's great since she doesn't have to remember everything that McKayla needs and she has time to respond! She will act different when she needs her batteries changed. We have her set up with rechargeables and she's ready to play in a couple of hours:)
We love her! Amazing Amanda is on her way for our 4 yr old - we'll see how she compares.
