I don't consider myself an audiophile but I know the difference between good sound and bad sound. I live in a city and I guess there is just too much RF bouncing around for these speakers to work well. I setup the speakers per the manufactures specs and tried the troubleshooting. Even with the speakers 10 ft away I still hear audible pops and hiss. Just for giggles I moved one of the speakers to the bedroom 40 ft away. Maybe the old Victorian I live in has too many layers of lead paint but I could barely hear the music playing and a constant level of hiss almost as loud as the music. The speakers may work better in an environment with less RF inference but they did not work for me. I did like the styling and the front large volume controls and the battery option for the speakers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Took a Chance -- It didn't pay off, April 10, 2008
By SCB (Moseley, VA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Acoustic Research AW877 900 Mhz Indoor Wireless Speakers (Black) (Electronics)
Based on the other ratings for this product, I felt like was taking a chance order these speakers. It seemed like it was about a 50/50 chance that they would function, if they actually weren't defective from the get go. When I initially set up the speakers I couldn't get clear reception but I figured it was because of the layout of my house and the fact that there were too many walls in between the transmitter and the speakers. When I moved them to another location with a clear line of sight to the transmitter they seemed to be much better. We used them one night and then when I went to turn them on the next night one of the speakers was completely dead and wouldn't even turn on. So, I've already sent them back to Amazon and requested a refund. I checked out the website of one of the bricks and mortar electronics stores and saw a pair of Element wireless speakers that had 14 review and a 4/5 star rating. They were only $100 and I wasn't sure if they'd be good quality, but I picked a pair up last night and they are excellent. They even worked great in the location where I couldn't get good reception on the Acoustic Research speakers. For anyone looking for an inexpensive set of wireless speakers that delivery decent quality sound and seem to be good quality, I highly recommend the Element speakers.

Installing electronic devices usually takes me a few tries and I consider it easy if it works before I give up. The Acoustic Research AW877 speakers were the easiest think I ever set up. I've had a harder time with wired speakers. I read the directions once, took the speakers and transmitter out of the box an set everything up the way the instructions said and they worked perfectly the first time. I can't beleive I didn't have to reread the directions. They were so simple.I waited a couple of weeks before I wrote this review because I wanted to be sure they continued to work as perfectly as they do. They're as good as wired speakers as far as the sound is concerned. I have them set up in the kitchen and the transmitter is in the living room, two rooms away. I never lost a signal or heard static. Best choice I could have made.

3.0 out of 5 stars AR wireless speakers good for what they are, January 20, 2008
This review is from: Acoustic Research AW877 900 Mhz Indoor Wireless Speakers (Black) (Electronics)
These are great sounding speakers for the price and the wireless flexibility is just what I needed. I did run into limitations though. When I had them two rooms away from the stereo I was getting a popping sound every few seconds. I moved them closer and the popping sound went away, so I found the range in my house limited to about 30 feet from the sending unit. I do have a lot of flourescent lights, so that may add to the problem. I also had the sending unit die after about 2 weeks. Fortunately the return for exchange to Amazon was very easy to do. The bright lights on the speakers are annoying, but I solved this by putting electrical tape over them. Finally, I just use them plugged in and would not even consider the cost of putting 8 batteries in each speak, unless maybe if I had rechargeable batteries.

I do recommend the speakers, but just want to note their limitations.

After my one of my beloved Recoton Wireless speakers quit on me, producing no sound except a loud buzz, I despaired of finding a pair of decent replacement speakers.

The JBL Wireless look very much like the old Recotons (aka Advent Wireless), but the customer reviews here at amazon scared me away. The JBLs sound as if they have some real issues with their auto cutoff threshold, and apparently it isn't user-adjustable.

So I read some good reviews of these ARs here and -- I'm happy to say that I am VERY pleased with the pair that arrived today. Folks looking to replace an old pair of Recotons or Advents need look (or listen) no further.

These ARs sound as good as the old Recotons, and at a very low volume setting -- around 8 o'clock on the volume knob! They also offer the modern conveniences of auto-tuning and auto-shutoff (and I am happy to say that the latter works well here -- no signal interruption even during quiet classical passages).

Otherwise the reception is great in my bathroom, some forty to fifty feet away from the transmitter, through several walls. Installation was fast and simple. No issues. On top of all this, the ARs can operate on battery power as well as AC, if you want to take them outside on your terrace or patio, for example.

Finally I must disagree with the other reviewer who said these speakers lacked bass. Not so! It's possible that their midrange might be a little prominent, but for their size, I think their sound is splendid, and I'm a musician who knows good sound.

At amazon's price, these speakers offer good value as well. Highly recommended!

This is my first set of wireless speakers and they are awesome! I am using them as a remote set of speakers in other rooms of my house and they are performing well with GREAT POWERFUL sound. Setup was simple. I plugged the transmitter in the tape out (rec) port in the back of my pioneer receiver. My only complaint is all the power cords needed to power everything (3 of them!) But for portable sound anywhere in my house, its worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars They Are What They Are, January 31, 2008

I bought these speakers based on reviews and the fact that it would be difficult to run wires onto my screened back porch. These work perfectly, as advertised, but they sound a bit "tinny." They lack bass response. I am an audiophile and have these outside a room filled with high end stereo equip. I am satisfied with this purchase. I deducted a star due to poor bass. I love the blue lights; they match the 1974 Marantz 2325 receiver to which the transmitter is plugged.

Very good sound for a wireless system, but I would prefer more bass. A treble/bass adjustment might improve the product. These can crank out the sound--in our kitchen we have them at 20% volume most of the time. I have high standards in sound quality and have sacrificed some quality for the convenience of wireless, but they are excellent for this purpose.

We definitely had to attach them to a fixed output signal as recommended in the manual. I tried attaching the transmitter to the volume-regulated output from our amplifier, but this was completely unsatisfactory, with a lot of static and dropped signals. After hooking the transmitter to the fixed output of the TV we are very satisfied.

The buttons on the front take some getting used to. Hold them down a couple seconds to trigger a fresh connection between the speaker and the amplifier; hold them longer to turn the speakers off. A minor point.

A strong point for these speakers was that they can be set up as left and right for stereo. Not all wireless speakers I looked at will permit this; many are mono only. All-in-all a very good product, especially if you can get them at a competitive price.

5.0 out of 5 stars good wireless solution, July 1, 2008

Received this unit a day earlier than promised. Tried to set it up into the outputs of my old analog tv. No luck. Changed settings again no luck. Finally decided to run it directly from the outputs of Directtv DVR. It worked perfectly then and still does. Good separation of channels. The blue lights seemed to bother some people. I simply turned the transmitter 90 degrees and I don't see it anymore.I would highly recommend the unit.

Had speakers less than a month and the speakers keep shutting down at random intervals. Upon closer examination of the system the problem appears to be with the transmitter. The problem has advanced to the stage of total failure after less than three weeks of operation.
