Finally..... A Grind and Brew that WORKS well!, November 25, 2007
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
After my fifth Cuisinart Grind and Brew Coffee maker (3 different models) stopped functioning I decided on choosing a different brand. There were no reviews so I crossed my fingers and hoped that Krups worked out the kinks with this new model. I had to wait 2 months for the coffee maker as it was ordered before it was released and I am so happy to say that the 2 month wait was MORE THEN worth it!!
Pros:
Quality Construction:
This unit is sturdy and heavier then the other grind and brews that I have owned. It appears to be well constructed. The hinges on the water canister are plastic but I don't see them breaking off anytime in the future. The basket handle also feels light, but only time will tell with that part. Also the plastic top on the carafe feels "heavy duty" (all 5 of the lids on my previous coffee makers' carafes lost their connector pegs within a few months and I had to purchase replacements that did the same thing). The levers all appear sturdy and are easy to move. The levers all catch and hold on the first attempt as well.
Ease of Use:
Super easy to set up and program! I love the fact that there are not multiple pieces that need to be cleaned and then replaced before and after brewing. The aroma setting really does make a difference when making small batches (2-4 cups) of coffee!
Noise:
I was surprised how quite this machine is compared to the other grind and brews. The loud grinder of the coffee pot would wake me up before my alarm would go off on my previous pots and I slept right through this one!
Appearance:
The coffee maker looks like a quality piece of kitchen equipment. It is a bit bigger then I thought it would be, but its size gives it a presence on the counter. The LCD displays a ton of information and adds to it's "high tech" appearance.
Function:
Everything is contained! The way the machine is made allows for the grinds to go directly into the basket without them falling into the water reservoir! The other review mentions that they had grinds on the counter, but we did not experience this as we only had a few grains that were easily wiped off (ours is set to one dot before the biggest grind). We have not experience any jamming of the automatic lid - it closes by itself and functions properly.
Taste:
One of the best cups of coffee I have had in a long time! I love that you can program the strength of the coffee and after brewing a few test pots - we could easily see that this function really works and is not a gimmick! The coffee was the perfect temperature! The automatic shut off will shut the idle pot off after two hours, but I think you can just hit the "On" button to start the warmer plate up again (Not sure about this yet).
Clean Up:
If you have owned one of the multiple piece grind and brew machines you will love the ease of clean up on this one!!! Basically, you clean out the removable filter holder. The clear plastic that shoots the grounds into the filter basket is removable for cleaning, but it does not have to be removed and cleaned after each use! How cool is that!
Extras:
The water filter in the bottom of the coffee pot is a nice touch and I love that you can program the coffee maker to tell you when it is time to change it. The smile face on the the LCD display is just too cute!
I wish.....
I wish it stored more coffee then it does as I was hoping to avoid purchasing another coffee canister. You will still need to purchase or use an airtight canister. NOT a big deal at all!
I wish the clock was able to be programed in regular time (it is in military time). There may be a way to change this, but I have yet to figure it out.
So for now, it is a 5 Star Coffee Maker for me! We have made 5 pots of coffee so far and all were consistent. I will come back and edit the review as time goes on if things change. Obviously after using the Cuisinart Grind and Brews for years the tiny flaws of this machine are easy to overlook! Right now I highly recommend this machine because of its appearance, ease of use, construction and wonderful tasting coffee!!!
***********************************************************************
UPDATE: After three months of perfect use the grinder stopped working. One morning it just wouldn't go on. I tried everything. I called Krups and they told me to ship it to one of their work centers and I should get a new one in two weeks.... it has been a month and I still do not have a coffee maker. I am so sad because this machine worked really REALLY well. Maybe my problem was a fluke. I hope anyway. I am very disappointed.

Great Coffee . . . IF YOU READ THE MANUAL!!!!, April 15, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
When our old Cuisinart Grind and Brew bit the dust (the unit would go dead many times during a brewing cycle and need a restart), I researched the options. Conical burr grinder, many options for brew strengths and quality, etc., convinced me to buy one despite some of the negative reviews.
Product arrived promptly, in perfect condition. My wife (the non-technical one among us) set it up after reading the manual. Everything worked perfectly! Best cup of coffee in years!
When I read the manual, it became obvious that every one of the complaints about the machine were the cause of not reading the manual completely. The failure of the cover to close for brewing is because the basket is not set in properly using the handle according to the manual. Generic mesh filters will also present proper motion. Grounds dispersal is caused by not latching the cover, per the manual, all the way back. There is a description of the two brewing settings for manual and for automatic. It is all in the manual!
So, read the manual before that great cup of coffee . . . that way you will get the great cup of coffee.
And I don't even have to mention: the relative quiet of the machine compared to a blade grinder; the ease of daily cleanup compared with the Cuisinart (about 1000% easier); use of less coffee to produce the proper strength cup (saving money); the proper brewing and serving temperatures; and more.
[OK - it is now mid-May, 2008, and my love for this machine has only grown. The ease of cleaning (as compared to my previous Cuisinart Grind and Brew) is worth the price!!!! BUT, actually this machine will pay for itself in less than a year! How? To get a satisfactory, actually a near-perfect cup of coffee, this machine uses about half the quantity of beans as compared with other brewing machine. I figure at about 10 months the amount I will have saved on coffee beans will have paid for this purchase.]

Great coffeemaker, excellent customer service, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I have had a number of grind and brew coffeemakers, Cusinarts (awful), Melittas (nice), and this one.
The KM7000 is, by far, the easiest to clean, which solves the biggest problem with this type of appliance. Just remove the filter basket, throw out the filter, rinse, and you're ready to go again. My wife loves it as well.
Unfortunately, after 2 weeks I was cleaning the filter basket and the spring loaded valve popped off the bottom (I was holding it by the valve; dumb). It was held on by a small gasket that popped off and that I could not find.
I called Krups customer service. As this is a new product, I was told that they do not yet have replacement parts, and that I had to pack and ship the whole coffee maker back to them. I responded that they shouldn't be selling a product that they couldn't service. After putting me on hold (and here is what differentiates great customer service from the typical "I don't care" brand that we have become used to), the rep told me that he talked to their supervisor and that they agreed with me! Therefore, they would send me a shipping label at their expense. Enclosed would be a part from another coffee maker that they thought would fit. If it didn't, ship it directly to them and call them with the tracking number and they would immediately send me a brand new unit.
As it turns out, the gasket was standard on a number of their models and it did fix the issue. But I thought that it was wonderful how they took ownership of the issue and did their best to make it right.
Great coffeemaker with very flexible grind and brewing controls to fit all tastes, very easy to clean, and great individualized customer service if you have any problems.
What more could you ask for?

Perhaps the best...?, February 2, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I drink a lot of coffee a pot a day two pots a day on the weekend. I'm a stickler for quality and taste, I'm a former Starbucks barista, store manager and Coffee Master with a sip of coffee I can tell you the region of the coffee and perhaps how the coffee was processed and how long it was roasted.(Cream and sugar do not belong in coffee) That being said I have high expectations I'm used to press coffee I got got this coffee maker merely for it's convenience factor
Pros
1.Grinds(slow burr grind)
2.Then shortly brews water temp is 197(192 after 7 months of use) degrees Fahrenheits which perhaps the closest to optimal a non-commercial brewer can get 205 is optimal
3.Does not humidify the beans in the hopper
4.Programmable
5.Bright display greets you in the groggy morning
6.Aesthetically pleasing(at least to my tastes)
7.Sprays 6 or 8 streams of water into the ground coffee just like the Starbucks brewers.
Cons
1.Small hopper
2.An opaque hopper would be nice to help preserve the beans
3.An airtight hopper with a one way valve vent would be nice
4.INTERCHANGEABLE (freezable)hoppers would be fantastic I would probably own a dozen to two dozen of them so that I would not be stuck with the type of coffee in hopper.
5.This almost got the unit 3 stars it leaves a small amount of ground coffee in the chute 2teaspoons - a tablespoon which sits until your next pot and is then used
6.No thermal carafe...For the high price why not?
7.Less plastic and more stainless steel and aluminum please
8.The carafe tends to allow coffee to spill down the side of it unless held at a precise angle relating to the amount of remaining coffee( I spill some about every other day)
9.Does not tell you how much ground coffee is used per cup you can adjust it through a system of symbols(not numbered calibrations)2tablespoons to every 6oz is optimal my opoin based on taste is that it is slightly less than that perhaps 1.6-1.8
10.A warming plate for your mug would be nice so that your mug is pre warmed
11.A way to hook my counter top water purifier to it would be nice
12.The purifier built into the machine only removes large sediment and chlorine (I have not used it I use my counter top purifier instead)
13.A way to use just the grinder and to grind very coarse coffee for use in a press
14.If it included a permanent filter with the machine considering the cost this would be nice
15.Not all the ground coffee winds up in the filter basket about 15 to 30 grounds escape every time(This diminishes overtime it is worse if I skip a day)
16. Larger capacity would be nice.
17. Noisy..I don't mind my family needs to wake up anyway I doubt it's possible to make a quiet one
18.After 7 MONTHS of use the markings on the carafe have worn off
All that being said keep in mind I am fanatical about my coffee and this is the best model I found your typical user may have only found 1-3 things wrong or lacking in this unit
******This thing has lasted 7 months of heavy use and is still going strong!*********

Manufacturer's defect or just poorly designed, January 5, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I purchased this looking for the perfect solution of convenience and great coffee, however, didn't end up with either.
First- I had the similar problem to several other reviewers. After grinding the coffee, the machine proceeds to SPRAY THE GROUNDS ALL OVER THE COUNTER. I would say 30% of what was ground never made it into the basket.
Looking closely at the system - there is a lid which you latch open prior to brewing; the lid being open allows the grounds to go from the grinder into the basket. There is a small hatch on a spring mechanism which opens when the lid opens. I soon noticed that THE HATCH IS NOT ALL THE WAY OPEN WHEN GRINDING. This directs the grounds at a 30-45 degree angle sideways, and is why the grounds end up on the counter. Looking closer, it appears that the lid on my machine does not quite open all the way, and clicks back just enough to partially close the little hatch. If I stand there and hold the lid open, the hatch opens straight down.
I investigated both a floor model and another boxed version in a retail store, and BOTH had the same problem. Speaking to Krups customer service, they offered to have me ship my model to them for repair (at my expense, and taking 5 weeks). Given that this is a new model and I am not the only one with this problem, I am presuming that poor design will cause other problems down the road, and am returning this; I'll try the new Cuisinart next.
The coffee was reasonably good; the flavor was full and complex, although not quite hot enough by my standards. But given the design flaw, it will go back.

I was in love with this coffee maker....., October 16, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
Best coffee I've ever made at home! It looks great, it's quiet and makes wonderful coffee. It stopped cycling water after 6 months use. Of all the things that could go wrong with a machine like this, the water stopped cycling?!?! I will miss it, but I will not buy another Krups!! Back to the Melitta.
Steven
Just an update, I sent the unit in under warranty and 3 weeks later, brand new machine!!! hooray!!! Krups does stand by the warranty hopefully this one will last longer(or die while still under the balance of the warranty!) I wish I could go back and change the rating, I was being a little hasty.
Another update, the replacement unit did the same thing and now it's off warranty!!

Well designed grind & brew system - but flawed electrical system, March 6, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
---- UPDATE May 2010 ---
I am changing the original enthusiastic 5-star review to a 1-star. The original unit suffered the same fate as many have noted in their reviews - the heating element suddenly ceases to work. The problem appears to be a fusible link that will eventually fail even though there is no short or other problem in the electrical system to cause the failure. Because we bought an early version of the product, we hoped that Krups would have seen the high failure rate and replaced the link with a more reliable component. So, we bought another unit, but after a similar period of time, it too failed in the same way and out of the warranty period. After two failures, we're moving on. I checked the Krups website and there is no indication that they have recognized this problem and fixed it. The site calls the KM-7000 "New" with a a "pro-grinder". What a disappointment that Krups hasn't addressed this in a more open way that would provide future buyers with knowledge that they could purchase future products with confidence.
I found a very good description of the problem and how to fix it on this website. I generally fix things myself, but ordering new fuses, taking apart the unit, and soldering connections was more TLC than I was willing to give this product:
[...]
---------------
I have owned this coffemaker since Christmas (2007) and have had very good, consistent results. We previously owned a good drip coffee maker and a separate burr grinder. We knew burr grinding whole beans was the way to go, but transferring the ground coffee from the grinder to the coffee maker each night resulted in a counter-top mess despite our best efforts. This model was newly introduced at the time we purchased it, but its design seemed superior to others on the market where users reporting jamming problems and a need to clean frequently. The design of this unit requires the ground coffee to travel only about one inch from the mouth of the grinder through a sloped chute before it drops into the filter basket. That short distance means there is very little chance for the coffemaker to jam and very little to clean. Indeed, the coffee grinds and goes into the filter basket without incident each and every time.
Other benefits - This unit has an excellent warming element. It does not scorch the coffee. I also like the the 24-hr format clock because it eliminates the possibility of getting am/pm mixed up.
My issues are few. This is a very tall appliance - it just fits under the cabinets. All that height assures reliable operation, but check your measurements. The spout dribbles consistently. The carafe is hard to clean because the lid is difficult to remove. The amount of coffee ground depends on the number of cups selected (10 max) and the selected brew strength. I like stronger coffee and can only put in 9 cups of water with the coffee maker set to generate the maximum amount of ground coffee.

Makes good coffee, but also makes a mess, January 10, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I bought the Krups KM7000 through Amazon.com and have had it for a few days. This is my first grind and brew machine, so I cannot compare against other grind-and-brew machines. Although, I've owned a stand-alone blade grinder and a typical drip coffee maker for a long time.
THE FACTS:
The bean hopper holds enough coffee to make 2-3 full pots of coffee. The bean grinder has 5 settings for the fineness of the grind, from fine to coarse. To set the fineness, you turn the whole bean hopper clockwise or counter-clockwise. The bean grinder uses a conical burr grinder, which is supposed to better than a typical blade grinder, because it grinds at a slower RPM and does not generate heat and friction, which can change the taste of the beans. There is a channel in which the grinds travel from the grinder to the basket. This channel has a removable clear plastic cover so that you can clean grinds that may get clogged in the channel. There is a spring-loaded cover between the grind chute and the filter basket. When setting up to make a pot of coffee, you manually move the cover to the left, tensioning the spring and locking the cover in the open position. During a grind-and-brew cycle, the bean grinder stops, the cover snaps closed, and the brewing begins. The filter basket is a cone shape, versus a flat-bottom filter. The cone shape is supposed to be better, as it allows the water to be in contact with the grinds longer and extract more of the flavor, oil, and aroma from the coffee. The glass carafe holds 10 5-ounce cups of coffee, or 50 total ounces. Be aware that some other coffee machines have 12- or 14-cup carafes (Although, most coffee makers measure a cup as 5 ounces. Go figure.) There is a burner/hotplate beneath the glass carafe to keep the coffee hot. The display is clear, bright, and easy to read. The buttons and programing interface are easy to understand. The programming interface has 3 settings for the strength of the brew, from weaker to stronger. Note that the clock on the display is in 24-hour military format, not 12-hour AM/PM format. The water reservoir has a carbon water filter, which is easy to insert and remove. The display also has an indication when to change the filter, although it simply counts some number of brew cycles before indicating to change the filter. The water reservoir also has an internal "water-height-stick" to let you know how many cups of water you've added. There is no external water-level indicator.
THE GOOD:
The Krups KM7000 makes a great-tasting cup of coffee. I attribute this to the conical burr grinder, the cone shaped filter, and the available settings for grind coarseness and brew strength.
THE BAD:
This grind-and-brew machine (or at least the particular one I have) makes quite a mess. After one grind-and-brew cycle, there are coffee grinds all over the coffee machine and counter. Here's why it happens... as the grinder grinds the beans and as the grinds fall into the filter basket, a few of the grinds randomly bounce out on to the counter. This wouldn't be so bad, as it is just a few grinds. However, a greater number of grinds collect on the edge of the cover to the filter basket, while the cover is in the open position. Furthermore, it seems that static electricity builds up in the grinds which causes even more grinds to build up on the edge of the cover. When the grind process stops, the cover to the filter basket is released, and the loaded spring snaps the cover closed over the filter basket. This spring-loaded action snaps the cover closed with the speed and force similar to something like a large mouse trap. So, the grinds that have collected on the edge of the cover are flung all over the coffee maker (all over the display area) and all over the counter.
I am pleased that it makes such a good-tasting pot of coffee. Although, I am quite disappointed with the mess it makes. Hence, 3 stars.
By the way, there are two other grind-and-brew machines that I considered, and you may want to also:
Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black
Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind-and-Brew Thermal 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker, Brushed Chrome and Black
Capresso 454 CoffeeTEAM-S Coffee Maker/Burr Grinder Combination
It seems the Krups is very similar in design to the Capresso. Both use a conical burr grinder. Both have an almost identical display, buttons, and programming interface. The difference is, on the Capresso, the entire filter basket swings open and closed during the brew cycle, where on the Krups, just a cover swings open and closed.
All of these have a glass carafe with an electric burner. Most brands also have similar machines, but with thermal carafes instead of the glass carafes. Just keep in mind that if the machine has a thermal carafe, it will not have an electric burner. Some people prefer the thermal carafe, as the electric burner supposedly "burns" the coffee and changes the flavor. However, I went with the glass carafe, as I prefer to keep the coffee nice and hot. With a thermal carafe, the coffee will drop in temperature quickly if the carafe is not pre-heated with hot water.

The perfect coffee maker., March 21, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
I've had the same Krups drip coffee maker for 20 years (yes, it still works) and decided it was time to upgrade. After a good deal of research, I settled on the Krups grind and brew and I am glad I did. This is the real deal here folks. While I do have to measure the beans, and I had to set the strength to my liking, this machine makes a superb cup of coffee. It has a burr grinder, not a blade, and there is a cover that swings shut to keep the channel from the grinder from getting clogged up with steam. Also, in my experience, my machine also did not spill any grounds from the grinder. The grinder is quieter than my standalone grinder, and I have to tell you, coffee from freshly ground beans is truly a great thing.
The machine is programmable, and you can set the strength and how many cups you want to brew. If your tap water isn't the best in the world, you can insert a filter under the water tank to help with the taste of the water.
One more thing. This coffee is HOT. This machine produces a HOT (and strong, if you like it that way) cup of coffee. You can adjust the strength, but let me tell you, it does not produce a warmish cup of coffee. This coffee is even hotter than the one my 20 year old Krups machine makes, so it shows that they have improved over the years.
In conclusion, if you want some great coffee, this is the machine to go with. Freshly ground... it doesn't get much better. Way to go Krups!

Very good coffee maker, January 12, 2008
This review is from: Krups KM7000 Grind-and-Brew 10-Cup Coffeemaker, Black (Kitchen)
This coffee maker was a christmas gift so I've had it for about three weeks. I only have a few coffee grounds on the counter (fewer than when I ground them separately). The grinding noise is not too loud for us. The automatic brew starts when our alarm goes off (I always hit snooze once so the coffee is finishing up as I'm wobbling toward the kitchen). It took about three days of adjusting the strength and grind to find our preferred strength. It's easy to clean and I clean the "hatch" every Saturday. Love it.
