5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite MP3 player so far
I've used just about every MP3 player there is and this one is right there with the best of them. It's small light and extremely easy to use. You don't need ANY software to upload songs to it. The device shows up like a drive on your PC. You have the option of using Windows Media Player 11 to upload songs, but I'd rather just drag and drop songs or use my Napster...

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars as advertized
this was my first MP3 device, and it was easy to figure out, and easy to load up with music
works fine, but the touch pad is a bit sensitive so when transporting it to and from the gym it sometimes turns on. otherwise it is a good deal for the price and I would buy it again

I've used just about every MP3 player there is and this one is right there with the best of them. It's small light and extremely easy to use. You don't need ANY software to upload songs to it. The device shows up like a drive on your PC. You have the option of using Windows Media Player 11 to upload songs, but I'd rather just drag and drop songs or use my Napster subscription to upload songs from Napster's huge library. I thought 2GB wouldn't be enough but it is so easy to upload songs when my mood changes that it's never been an issue for me. If you like to watch movies then you may want to go with the larger 4GB (NWZS616) or 8GB (NWZS618) versions of this model since a typical movie takes up ~700K memory after you compress it to QVGA. If you want a larger screen size then you can get the NWZA815. That model is basically the same player with a larger screen. It also has a heavier metal shell, but it does not have an FM tuner like the NWZS615, and I wanted the FM tuner. I typically use my player in shuffle mode in my car and if I don't want to hear a song, it is a breeze to reach down and click just to the right of the center button to skip to the next song. I honestly can't see how anyone would be disappointed with this player especially when you consider the great price.

4.0 out of 5 stars I like to say I own a "Walkman" again., November 19, 2007
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
Pro's: Very good sound quality, perfect picture quality for a screen this small, very easy to put music on it if you have Rhapsody or Windows Media, battery life is great (I get about 20-26 real-world hours), it turns on and off very quickly-(pause it and it will turn off after 30sec.;Press play and it starts instantly!), YOU'RE NOT STUCK WITH iTUNES!!, IT'S NOT AN IPOD!!

Con's: the included headphones aren't that great, you must use the proprietary plug to charge and interface with the PC.

Over-all it was a great buy! MY first "real" music player was cassette "Walkman" as a kid. I'm just as giddy over my new portable as I was 20 years ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sony NWZ-615 and Audiobooks., March 1, 2008
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
I have the 4gb version, but this review applies to this player as well.

I listen to allot of books that I download from my library system using Overdrive, which uses protected wrm files. I was excited to see this player as a compatible one on the overdrive library website so purchased it.

Everything the reviewers say about this player, the battery life, easy user interface, great sound, etc. are true, so I like the player from these aspects.

The problems in using this player for audiobooks is twofold. First there are no bookmarks. My listening tracks are about 70 minutes long. If I want to listen to FM, I can easily switch over to it. However, when I go back to music, the player acts like I am starting over. I have to find the the file I was listening to and then fast forward through it until I find my place in the book.

Second, the fast forward/backward option. My old Creative Muvo would accelerate the fast forward the longer I hold down the button. So moving forward from the 10 to the 20 minute mark is much faster than going from the 0 to 10 minute mark. The sony only fast forwards at the same, slow, rate regardless of how long you hold down the button. So while it took seconds to move forward 40 minutes with the Creative, this player seems to take forever, although I haven't actually timed it.

I still plan to use this player as my primary, as I have already sunk my money for it, but had I to do it over, I would have picked a different player for my specific needs.

Hopefully Sony can come out with a firmware update to address these requirements. (hint, hint)

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat little MP3/Video player, November 12, 2007
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
I have been on a Sony rampage lately (bought 2 Sony W80 Cybershots, NWZ Walkman and a PS3) and I am always happy with what I buy.

I bought this player in pink for my fiancee because it came in pink and she loves pink.. It also went great with her Sony Digital camera which is also pink.

I tried it out before I gave it to her and I was pretty much impressed with it once I messed around with it a little. It was simply a drag and drop affair uploading music to it. I was also able to transfer files with Windows Media Player. This also allowed me to upload the album covers. I love that you can upload pictures to it and it will play a slideshow.

Sound is very clear and has a very good high volume level. I did not have a chance to use the included headphones as I bought her pink JVC Gumys but they are 11 dollar headphones and still sounded great. I have owned a Toshiba Gigabeat 20GB and my brothers all own iPod videos. Having said that I was still impressed with the Sony. The small screen has an incredible resolution and the video demo really showed what this little player can do with video. I have not tried to upload my own videos though.

When I presented her with this as a gift I gave her the option of the Sony or a brand new 3rd Gen iPod Nano... iPod 4GB or Sony 2GB... she tried out the Sony and thats the one she chose. I returned the ipod and put the money towards a PS3.

I would like to think that she chose the Sony because it was pink but I had also bought a pink anodized case for the nano and this did not sway her decision. I think she made her decision when she realized that it had a battery life of 33 hours! She also didnt feel like she would ever need 4gb of music anyways. She liked the styling better than the Nano which is a bit wider. I am thinking of buying one myself now :)

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!, December 25, 2007
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
My son got this for Christmas and my Daughter got an Ipod. The Walkman is SO much easier to use! Very user friendly, has FAR MORE features than the ipod and you don't have to deal with the "i" software or syncing thru apple. This player works fabulous with Windows Media Player. It's fast and so easy to upload, select, sync...everything you need to do in no time flat! The iPod is confusing, the buttons are strange and not very user friendly. I wish I had bought one of these for my daughter and not wasted my money on a iPod! This is a FABULOUS player for songs, video, pics...EVERYTHING! Very Easy to navigate!! I LOVE IT and my son is THRILLED!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Who needs an ipod?, February 26, 2008
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
Several years I purchased a 2nd generation ipod which I adored. I downloaded music from Comcast Rhapsody and synced it with my ipod with no problem whatsoever. One sad day, as a result of leaving it in the car overnight and repeatedly freezing the battery, the ipod died. I then sprung for an 80 GB 5th generation ipod. It was sleek and shiny and smaller than the first one. I was in heaven! That is, until I actually tried to use the thing. Apparently between the last purchase and this one, Apple determined that I was going to use itunes for my music downloads and that was final. I hate itunes. They do not carry a large selection of the type of music I like to listen to and they only give you approximately a 10-second preview of each song. Once you purchase the song, you can put it on your device but God forbid something happen like purchasing a new pc - you are unable to get it again OR sync what you already paid for and put on your device to your new pc. This infuriated me. As well, it does not work AT ALL with my new Linux laptop and the entire experience left a bad taste for me. They are entirely too restrictive with what I choose to do with MY device and MY music once I purchase it.

Out of frustration, I purchased this inexpensive little Walkman. When taking everything from the box the Walkman was so small I nearly discarded it. It appears much larger in the photos. It is certainly attractive and super-portable. Within 10 minutes, I had it connected to my pc and in the process of transferring 300 songs to it. Sure it is lacking in the storage space on the ipods but do you REALLY need 80 GB or even 20? I did not. I never used more than 3 after YEARS of transferring files.

This is definitely a device worth considering if want something simplistic to store your music and are not heavy into collecting photos and videos, etc... I purchased Nanos for my children during the holidays and I am so sorry I had not thought to take a look at these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great MP3 player for the price, July 2, 2008
By Travlee "Travlee" (Youngsville, LA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
Forget spending more for an iPod, this little player is awesome! Got this for my birthday and absolutely LOVE it! First of all, the sound quality is as wonderful as I would expect from Sony. The interface is easy to use for loading on songs and it took no time at all for me to learn to navigate the menus. I was worried about space but I have about 500 songs loaded with plenty of space left for more. I haven't had a problem at all with battery life, the manual says 33 hours and while I haven't kept track, I have gone a very long time without having to charge it up. The video screen is small but pictures come out crisp and clear and videos look great! All in all I think my husband made a great choice!

Just a few minor complaints. 1. I wish the USB connector was the same as the one used by my blackberry so I'd have one less cord to deal with. 2. The headphones that come with the unit have great sound quality but are really uncomfortable. 3. Wish that there were more accessories for this unit from other manufacturers. Sony puts a premium price on the docking stations and speakers so I would like to see some other manufacturers have accessories for this unit. Still, the pros definately outweight the cons!!

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better economy MP3 players out there, February 12, 2009
By EMqube "qube" (Houston, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
I have owned Rio MP3 players, Sansa players, multiple Walkman branded products (including the W710i Walkman phone), and 3 iPods from different generations and models, and I have to start off by saying that this is my main player. Of the 5 MP3 players I currently own, this is my favorite.

It is not the fanciest, nor is it the best looking; but when it comes to functionality, battery life and durability, I find it to be the front runner in each category.

This player is light, easy to read, and intuitive to manage both on screen, and via your computer. I also much prefer smaller (read: sub 4 gig) MP3 players, as you never end up managing much larger than that correctly or frequently enough.

PROS -

* Battery life is amazing
* Easy management of files and folder creation, even for beginners
* Good screen, scratch resistant and bright, very clear
* Battery life is unheard of. I commonly get 25 hours out of a single charge
* Intuitive device to use, much better than Apple's 'click wheel'
* Lightweight and small enough to carry in many situations
* Did I mention the battery life is unreal?!!
* Radio tuner is very good, gets great reception

CONS -

* Not great for video. Doesn't accept many file formats for a modern player
* Lightweight plastic molded housing may feel cheap to some
* Not enough shuffle options compared to other players on the market
* Provided headphones are not worth using. Hard to hold that against this player though, as most headphones that come with MP3 players are awful.

I use a pair of Senheisser CX300s with this player, and it booms!

This player is great for many reasons, but I think the top reason is that because of the durability of the player, and more specifically the screen, you don't need fancy protectors and accessories to adorn it. Why drive the cost of your player up by purchasing needless add ons when you don't have to? You can just throw this little guy in your pocket, purse, backpack or wherever, and you don't need to worry about damaging it.

Durability, battery life, usability, and weight make this Walkman a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Audio/Video Player, no complains so far, May 15, 2008

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
i purchased this item at amazon jan-01 2008 and i have been using it until now (may 2008), so, i can give you a based opinion that will help you make your choice.
First, the sound quality is awesome, my friend has an ipod nano(4GB) which i used to borrow every now and then and definitely this sony player makes it eat some dust, the mids are pretty well shaped and the highs are bright and defined, although the lows could use a boost it is only due to the headphones included with the player which are kinda cheap, but that is the pattern every manufacturer is following these days. yes i did test it with higher quality headphones (sony indeed) and the difference is huge, concerning the lows only.
The portability is better than ipod too, the player is smaller(although not slimmer than ipod nano), lighter and attracts the looks for being unique. i guess the word to describe the looks is: sleek.
I join every other reviewer about the ease of use: the menu is intuitive and very easy too use, my wife always has trouble while interacting with electronics (even the microwave) and i didn't even had to explain her how to play a song or switch to picture gallery, she found out herself in a few minutes. in my case i changed the software language to spanish and there are no nonsenses or typos, it has 11 languages.
The battery life is second to none, even when i'm not counting the playback hours i still think they are more than 30 hours audio playback, it lasts so much that sometimes i totally forget to charge it and as the charge is performed by a USB port (no wall AC or car charger) you have no way to charge it on the go which can be frustrating.
The quality of the screen is outstanding and both the pictures and the videos look great, i would like to have a larger screen size for that quality but that would have made the player heavier and bulkier and that would've made me look somewhere else ;)i can store more than 4 hours of FULL quality videos (2 or 3 movies)in mp4 format at 384kbps using a free compressor and still keep a decent amount of songs!
it integrates beatifully with VISTA and WMP11 there are a few XP machines that doesn't recognizes it as an audio player but they always let you access it as a removable drive which is the main purpose.

want cons? well... they are not many but i will talk about a few i've noticed
1- the charge method is thru USB and the port in the player is not a standard mini-USB but a propietary one, so, you break/lose that cable and your done.
2- the software provided might be attractive to others but to me is a joke. Windows "sees" it without any drivers and the applications in the cd are lame. also, the napster subscription is worthless to anyone outside US.
3- could use better audio quality headphones, although they are durable their sound is not great.
4- like another reviewer said its true that it takes forever to fast forward a long song or any other audio file. but the video fast forward IS indeed better implemented. because i had tried it before with full movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Sony 2 GB Walkman Video MP3 Player with FM Tuner (Black) (Electronics)
My son loves this mp3 player, I puchased it for him for Christmas after a thorough investigation into different mp3 players. The walkman sound clarity is "Sony" (meaning outstanding!). It includes FM radio, which IPODS don't have, not to mention how user friendly it is. Let me just say this, I played with his for awhile & ultimately purchased a cute little pink one for myself ( I just exchanged the goofy little shuffle my husband purchased and got a few bucks back to boot!) I would highly recommend this!
