4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice mat
I just got this mat, and it is very nice. It is quite sticky, and definately provides for great grip. I don't slide around at all. The design is absolutely fantastic!

This was my first 1/8 inch mat. I've always had the 1/4 inch thicker mats. I think this mat gives me a better grip while doing yoga on CARPET. You can feel the floor more, and feel more...

2.0 out of 5 stars False description of mat
Please note: If you're looking for a PVC-free yoga mat, which would otherwise be called "eco-conscious" or "eco-friendly", this is not it. Even though the description of the product says "eco-friendly", this mat is composed of PVC plastic (which is not at all good for the planet!). I have returned this item due to this!

2.0 out of 5 stars this is a slip off, January 27, 2009

I don't know about everyone else but my body produces moisture when I work out. So while I'm in my downward dog my hands slowly start slipping off this mat. This is my first yoga mat and I love the color, the design and the thickness but it is not giving me the grip I need at all. I'm glad it was only 20 bucks but that's still a slip off...I mean rip off. What is the point of the yoga mat if you can't hold the most popular yoga pose. Maybe yoga mats aren't supposed to be 100% slip proof. Who knows...

This was my first 1/8 inch mat. I've always had the 1/4 inch thicker mats. I think this mat gives me a better grip while doing yoga on CARPET. You can feel the floor more, and feel more grounded. Definately worth a try if you're used to the thicker mats.

Just a warning, the smell of this mat will knock you out! When i first unwrapped it, i had to put it upstairs in an enclosed bedroom with the windows opened because it was smelling up the ENTIRE house. After 2 days in that room the smell was COMPLETELY gone, I didn't even wash it. I used it on the third day and didn't notice a smell at all. This is my 4th yoga mat, and they ALL smell, so that is just something that every mat does. (except maybe the eco mats, but I don't like the strange texture.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Gaim Yoga Mat, February 8, 2009

The mat is great looking but I was disappointed in the thickness of it. My Mom purchased one at the local Target that was also a Gaim and it is of better quality. I read the reviews regarding thickness but there were different thicknesses local and the Gaim brand local have all been thicker than this particular one I received.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good mat, September 8, 2009

I see people who are reviewing this mat as a workout mat and that is not what it was created for so I am confused. If you want a mat that will work with high impact workouts, then this is not the right product for you. This is a Yoga mat and that is all. I like the thickness of it, I do my Yoga on my carpet. Based on other reviews I immediately took the mat out of the package and unrolled it outside and washed it with dish soap and warm water. I just srubbed it some with a cloth and rinsed. Then I put it over my outside table and let it dry under my patio for a few hours. Once you take it out of the package the smell is horrible, as are all these type plastic products. After this I immediately used the mat. The smell is gone and I did not slip on my mat. I tend to slip around on other mats but that is probably because I never washed one before. From other reviews I saw that there is some type of coating on these things so the dish soap not only killed the smell, but it got rid of the coating. This mat is very nice looking and I enjoy using it. I would recommend this to people and tell them to just wash and air it out before it's first use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Design but Not the Best You Can Get, November 10, 2009

Pros:

- Gaiam offers very pretty designs on their mats.
- Easy to roll up and store.
- Can be cleaned easily.

Cons:
- Not thick.
- Has plastic-y/rubbery smell.
- Not the most eco-friendly mat out there.

Conclusion: It's great if you want to throw it down over a tile or hardwood floor to do quick sit-ups, cardio, etc. However, as some other reviewers have pointed out, it has a smell and is thin so it's not so great for yoga (you can definitely feel the floor) or anything that you have to do that would put your nose inches from the mat (push-ups).

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful But Not Very Sturdy, November 15, 2008

This is a lovely mat, and relatively comfortable to lay on. It does stink when you first take it out, and might give you a headache if you try to use it before you work out on it (it did me). I just let it hang over my side fence for a day and the smell had gone away significantly. It has dissappeared altogether now that I've had it for a few weeks.

This might be a good yoga mat, but it doesn't like my high impact exercises. I'm trying to find a good (pretty) exercise mat, but haven't had any luck so far. I like this one, because the pattern gives me something to focus one while I'm doing painful exercises. But the material just isn't holding up to my tennis shoes.

I got this to give as a gift...thank goodness many mentioned the smell of it so I was prepared! OMG this mat had a chemical smell that permeated our entire house for 2 days, despite my cleaning it (both sides), rinsing it, spraying it, then needing to Febreeze the rug it was opened up on! And it still had a stink to it! On a good note the color is just fantastic--bright and cheery--and the koi really do look like they are smiling! The koi print takes up the top half of the mat, the bottom half is blank except for the Gaiam logo at the bottom edge. So some design without being distracting. This mat does seem...flimsier? compared to my HuggerMugger tapas mat of the same thickness. It seemed to stretch more doing Warrior II pose than my usual mat, and after several days the original curl has not flattened out yet. I love the pattern and color, but my preference is still the Hugger Mugger one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mat!, March 30, 2008
This review is from: Gaiam Yoga Mat (Koi Fish) (Sports)
I received this item a day early, which was great. The mat itself is just right in thickness. It's comfortable and non-slip. The color and design is unlike other mats which makes it unique.
