5.0 out of 5 stars Needs new strings.
I bought this violin for my little brother for $70 here at Amazon, and for the price, you can't ask for much more. Once the Orchestra Teacher changed the strings, she said that it's actually a really good violin for beginners.

When I first got this (my first violin), I was quite impressed with it. It came in a nice case, had a strap to retain the neck in the case, and was rather shiny.

Later however I managed to snag an inexpensive retired rental off of ebay and had a nice comparison. Compared to a more expensive yet heavily beat up rental, this violin has pegs which slip a lot. You'll need peg drops or a lot of patience to continue to reset them. The rosin does work, but it's fairly horrible. Bridge is uncut and feels much more fragile than the rental. Strings sound... oddly hollow compared to the Thomastik Dominant strings I have on the former rental.

Overall I would recommend this to an adult with some degree of patience. If you're buying this for a child, you had better be ready to add new strings, better rosin, peg drops, and perhaps be prepared for its viable lifetime to be rather short. I haven't owned it long enough to know for sure, but from the guides I've read on ebay it seems that violins that are sealed and not varnished tend to crack and die faster than those that are varnished.

If you go in knowing what you're getting, it's a decent product. It will also make a beautiful decoration should you decide to hang it on a wall.

As a final odd note, the case is very nice and lightweight, and looks better than the ugly hard cases that I've seen.

This is my 1st violin, but when I went to my 1st lesson, I was informed that the bridge and strings needed to be replaced.
For a few dollars more get a better one.
The rosin I got was broken.
I do like the case however you can't keep sheet music in the pocket without folding it.
I don't like the velco on the neck as it snags the strings.

Overall it's ok for a 1st violin.

This isn't a bad violin. It's worth the money you pay for. The only problem was the bridge; it wasn't carved properly.

It's great for such a cheap price! I've always wanted to learn violin but was afraid of getting something really expensive and end up not liking it. This way even if I don't learn it, being at 40-50 dollars, it'll make an inexpensive gift or even an interesting wall decoration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product for Price, May 13, 2010

After reading several of the previous commentors problems with the violin, I honestly can say that people who aren't familiar with new violins may have a problem.

People who say the violin won't stay in tune must realize that new violin strings need to streach out, and yes, it is frustrating, but it needs to be done. My violin teacher is actually extremely impressed with the quality of the strings and the sound, even if it falls out of tune so much.

Other people talk about the bridge being bad, but, it really isn't that aweful, as it holds strings in place.

Also, bows need to be rosined before being played, which means that it is not playable out of the bag for the first time until it is rosined right.

and yes, the bow is crappy wood, I would recommend a $30 fiberglass bow available at any music store, but it works very well. My violin teacher has a PhD in violin performance, and she says that the instrument has great sound quality, and I am quite happy with it, at least for a beginner instrument.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Acceptable, April 7, 2010

This is exactly what I had expected when I ordered this violin. Visually it looks very nice, not at all like something you would find at Toys'R'Us. The sound is OK once you install the bridge and rosin the bow. Within an hour of receiving my package I was playing Mary Had a Little Lamb and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I couldn't be happier. There were some frayed hairs on the bow that had to be clipped and it seems the back of the neck was not stained, but I can live with that. I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert on violins but I am very satisfied with my purchase. I'm sure you won't be winning any competitions with this but for $50 you won't find a better value.

This violin is what it says it is, a beginner violin. I have seen many people saying that it doesn't stay in tune, which is not true. However, the tuning keys come very very loosely in, so in order for the violin to stay in tune, you must push the tuning keys in as far as you can, so they don't just slip back out of tune. As far as beginner sets go, this is the best one that I've seen yet. A decent bow, a fully functional violin, a bridge that is good (people who say you have to get a professional to carve it are stupid, the bridge is fine), and a case that serves its b well. The only drawback is that the rosin that comes with itsnt very good and makes every note sound squeaky and painful to listen to, so I reccomend getting different rosin as soon as you get the violin. I've found amazon is the best place to buy good rosin for a cheap price. A great buy that I would reccomend to anybody and everybody who wants to start playing violin.

I bought this violin for my daughter a year ago after looking around my neighborhood music stores and finding exorbitant prices. The beginning price point they all gave me was about 300 dollars and their "affordable" rental prices were a joke. As a single mom, I really needed a good price. Plus I didn't really know if my daughter was actually going to like it and continue playing. I can honestly tell you that this violin is a good bargain. It came perfectly packaged and was delivered on time. It is the perfect violin for a student. It came with a carrying case and the rosin and it has withstood being bounced around the school bus and being thrown in the closet 3 times a week. We just dusted it off for the new school year.

Talk about being disappointed. Nothing worse than looking forward to setting this up and finding that I really can't do anything because the bridge isn't notched. It has inspection pencil marks on it ("13", I think) so someone has looked at it.

I'm not at all sure what to do with it now.

Worst Amazon purchase ever.

If anyone has any advice, I'd be interested. I really don't want to take it to a professional as who knows what they'd charge to fix it and I bought it based on price assuming it would actually be playable.

Update:

As I see it, Amazon will only offer a refund after I return the whole thing. What a pain. I'd order it again but who knows if I'd get an un-notched bridge again!
