My mother purchased this humidifer for my 2 1/2 month old daughter's room. When I set it up last night, I was amazed at how loud it was!!! I normally play a CD of lullabies at night, and you could not hear the music from that across the room, let alone hear the mobile in the crib! And this was on the quiet setting. Needless to say, I am very disappointed.

As a child growing up, I always had the impeller type humidifiers in which a spinning tube would draw water inside of it and then toss it out in a visible mist. While these could be quite effective, they had the drawback of being loud and soaking everything around them.

When my daughter was born, we got an ultrasonic humidifier. The mist was a little finer, but again, it had the tendency to soak everything around it, and created scale on itself and its surroundings with tap water.

So this time I decided to go with the evaporative type of humidifier. With these, a fan draws moisture out of a wick filter that is then disbursed about the room. These types of humidifiers have the advantage of being self-regulating because evaporation is quicker in a dry room, slower in a moist room. They also trap the minerals and bacteria that may be in the water in the filter instead of spraying them in the room. The disadvantages are that they require costly filters, and you have to treat the water to keep bacteria, mold, and scale from building up on the filter and components. Both of these can be achieved with the addition of a few drops of humidifier treatments that can be found at your local Wal-Mart.

With all this in mind, I did lots of comparison shopping and finally turned to the Graco 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier. This compact unit appears to be much more durable than other brands at a similar price point, and since its components are dishwasher safe, it is much easier to give it a thorough cleaning. Although the unit could be considered loud, especially on its high setting, the low setting is quite pleasant to me, and provides a nice white noise to counteract background sounds. Most importantly, it does a good job of raising the humidity into comfortable levels during the winter. And with the water appropriately treated, there is NO mold on my filter and minimal mineral deposits.

Note: this is advertised as a "baby" humidifier, but its shape and design fit as well as any other humidifier in any room of your house. We bought two. One for our bedroom, the other for my daughter.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the easiest humidifiers to maintain., April 18, 2009
This review is from: Graco 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Baby Product)
We have gone through about 4 humidifiers for our 13 month old. This one is easy to clean and easy to change the filter. The other humidifiers we had would get very moldy and nasty very fast. This humidifier does not get that way. The only reason I would give this 4 stars instead of 5 is the fact the the filter does need replaced about every 2 months. It cost about $7 each.

This is the one. I have searched awhile for a humidifier that would meet all my needs. I needed one that efficiently put moisture in the air without leaving pools of water. I needed one that did not leave a white residue on everything near to it. I need one that was not much trouble to maintain. Graco met my requirements.

I needed a humidifier because members of my family had very dry nasal passages. Sometimes it was so dry that we would have nosebleeds from the dry membranes. Dry nasal passages would result in breathing difficulty.

To add to our problems, we live in a dry climate. This is true for much of the rural areas in America - especially west of the Mississippi. We have central air conditioning to keep cool in the summer and a furnace for warmth in the winter. Both of those appliances take moisture out of the air.

This Graco uses the "evaporative" moisture system. Essentially it blows air through a moist "wick", raising the humidity in the air.
I purchased some additives to prevent bacteria from breedingKaz Humidifier Bacteriostatic Treatment (8 oz.)
I also purchased some additives to prevent mold: Kaz KWT-8 Humidifier and Vaporizer Water Treatment
With these additives (just a few drops each time I fill the reservoir), and a weekly cleaning in my dishwasher, and I get exactly what my family needs.

On the up side, the cool mist was immediatly felt in the room.
I will investigate this further, as Graco normally makes or puts their name on only the best products.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible humidifier, January 4, 2010

I have used this humidifier several times and it is terrible. It leaks, is very loud, and the filter begins to get moldy after a day. I am now going to purchase a different humidifier.

2.0 out of 5 stars costly, April 20, 2009

I would not recommend this humidifier if you are looking for a good value. It does work okay, but the filters need to be replaced every two weeks, which really adds up! I do like the white noise the machine makes because it seems to lull our baby to sleep. In the end, however, I wouldn't buy this again simply because of the cost.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mold Magnet, September 27, 2008
This review is from: Graco 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Baby Product)
I bought this humidifier to help with the extremely dry air in my apartment. It works fairly well as a humidifier, it works by having a 'filter' sit in a shallow pool of water that is replenished from the reservoir above. The problem is that the filter sits in a pool of water, and is always moist. After a few weeks, the air in the room smelled funny, and when I went to replace the filter, it was covered in black and green mold.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hate it!!!, July 27, 2010
By Marie (Sierra Madre, CA, US) - See all my reviews

Purchased this humidifier to coordinate in my son's big boy room. He had the Crane Frog in his nursery, which is now used for his little sister. I have suspicions that the filter is getting my son sick. I also am disgusted w/ the fact that I have poured water down the back of the dresser & into the outlet many times while changing the water. If it does not sit properly on the filter, this happens. I consider myself a very smart and savvy mother, so it is definitely a poor product. I have just ordered another Crane Humidifier for his room & will throw this one out immediately!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Loud and Filters Don't Last, July 27, 2010

I bought this for my infant son when he got his first cold. It was a good price, but I found out later why. The quiet setting is anything but. It sounds like a hair dryer is running even on this setting. After only a few days, the filter (which sets in a pool of water) starts to get moldy. You either have to wash the filter every few days or replace the filter every week or so. The filter replacements are not cheap at $6 each. I recommend spending a bit more money and getting something that will last and not make your child sick from mold.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaky and Loud, June 26, 2010
By Cynthia (Webster, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Graco 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier (Baby Product)
I bought this product without doing research first. My mistake, I know. I was attracted to the quiet feature as stated on the box;"exclusive quiet setting emits soothing white noise to help baby sleep...," and it was small enough to place in the corner, out of the way. I was sold and took my new favorite product home. When I filled it, the water leaked from the back where the electrical cord was. "Ok," I thought, "don't move it too much." But really who wants water leaking on the electrical cord? I dried it off and plugged it in. I turned the knob to high and it sounded like a hair dryer on the highest setting about to burn up. I switched it to the "quiet" setting and it sounded like a sick moose sucking its last breath. So the "exclusive quiet setting" was not emitting such a soothing white noise as advertised and I felt like a sucker. So Graco Cool Mist Humidifier, you fooled me once but never again. If it is your intention to sell sucky products to suckers you have won this round, but I can always return it and get my money back and that is what I am doing today. So thank you Cool Mist Humidifier for sucking to the point that I got off my lazy behind this Saturday morning and wrote my frustrations here instead of smashing your piece of junk product on the floor.
