4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first time crayons for age appropriate toddlers
I must admit I am surprised by the amount of complaints posted here. I bought these for my 15 month old and they were a huge hit, and still are at 22 months of age. (Although now the traingular markers and finger paints are more excititng for him.)

The crayons should not come out of the holders unless the TaDoodle is held and twisted in a certain direction...

1.0 out of 5 stars flawed design
I was sooooo excited to try these with my twins boys! What a disappointment!!! First, the crayons just come right out of the plastic holders. My son had all three crayons pulled out within 30 seconds (before I could even demonstrate how to color on the paper with them). While I was trying to put the blue crayon back into it's thing, my other son just bit the top off...

I was sooooo excited to try these with my twins boys! What a disappointment!!! First, the crayons just come right out of the plastic holders. My son had all three crayons pulled out within 30 seconds (before I could even demonstrate how to color on the paper with them). While I was trying to put the blue crayon back into it's thing, my other son just bit the top off the red crayon no problem. Then they decided that throwing them would be fun. Again, the crayons just came right out. In addition, the color of the crayons does not match the colors of the holders. I would have made the dark blue crayon's holder mostly blue (not mostly red and purple with a light blue stripe), etc. The yellow one holds the red crayon and the blue one holds the green crayon. My last complaint is that they are bottom heavy. This means they rest with the crayon side up. So, when my sons would go to grap them, they have to figure out how to flip them over in order to draw with them.

Oh how I wish I had read these reviews first. I was so happy to have something that I thought would be easy for my 13 month old to draw with. I excitedly gave her one, and within 2.5 seconds, she had bitten the top off the red one and was on her way to muching the rest. I can totally see that the crayons are exactly the choking hazard size and come out easily (if they aren't nibbled to pieces first). It's not even easy to draw with. I am absolutely floored that these are not recalled. It's a "no brainer" that this is a choking hazard. Please, please for the safety of your little ones, do not buy! I encourage everyone to complain to Crayola.

I loved the concept of a safe, easy-to-hold crayon for toddlers. Unfortunately, my 13 month-old picked two of the TaDoodles up and started tapping them together and one just fell apart. That was followed by a mad scramble to pick up all the little internal parts, one of which I had to fish out of her mouth! And to make matters worse, she proceeded to pick the remaining two TaDoodles up by the crayon tips, and they just slid out of their holders and again, went immediately into her mouth. Total time for me to chuck all three of the things? Less than 5 minutes. Very disappointing.

At this point, I'm just throwing my voice in with the others, if only to underscore how completely ineffective these crayons are at their purpose. Does Crayola even have a product testing department? With actual children??
My newly 1-year-old daughter received these as a Christmas present, and I'm so glad I didn't spend my own money on them!!
My daughter did all the things the other posters' kids did. In addition to that, the crayons were so soft that my 4-year-old was able to smash them flat very easily. I'm not a choke hazard worrier but if I were, the crayons that come out so easily are definitely a choking hazard, as they are about 1/2 inch wide, and 2 inches long (maybe a 'swallowing hazard' would be more appropriate, since they are THAT SMALL). Even if you were able to get your child to use them, once the tip is gone, the toy is useless, since there's no way to get the rest of the crayon to sit higher. That's just wasteful to me.
My solution was the same as the other posters, I went and bought the 16-pack of big fat crayons for my daughter, and we're much better off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly disappointing ..., January 9, 2008

I was very excited when I heard about these, and the whole TaDoodles line of products. I don't know about the markers, but the crayons and paints have some very basic design flaws. My 21-month-old daughter loves to color, so I told all of the grandparents about TaDoodles for Christmas. The crayons are hard to grab and get in the right position for coloring, the crayons fall out, then the washable wax is so soft it gets everywhere! The paints were even worse. The little bristles acted like siphons, and paint just kept coming out, even when the toy was upright. The paint we did put on paper still wasn't dry the next day. The only redeeming quality is that both the crayon and paint truly does wash out of everything, but who wants the mess to begin with? She does just fine with regular crayons, so don't waste your money. Her Christmas presents got all of about 30 minutes of use before we gave up on them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, December 25, 2007
By dkim6599 "DKim" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crayola 3 Ct Washable Tadoodles Crayon Buddies (Toy)
I was so hopeful that my 21 month old would love these crayons. But they have two big problems.

1. The crayons fall out too easily. Sometimes I can get them back in so they will stay, sometimes not. This basically makes the product useless because every time he tips them to write the crayon falls out.

2. It's actually harder for him to position them in his hands correctly than a regular crayon (which he can actually hold properly already). Look how they sit with the cayon pointing up. The kid is going to pick them up so the crayon is pointing into his palm and then have to manipulated it until the bottom is in his palm. I'm sure this is something he could get used to, but is it really worth it considering that the crayons fall out AND that I can just give him a (much cheaper) regular crayon?

Seriously I found these to be a complete waste of my money.

These other 1 star reviews were exactly right, wish I had read them first instead of wasting money. My 17-month old boy just took the crayons right out because they don't stay locked in. Instead of coloring with them, he thought they were great to take the crayons out and put back in, while getting soft crayon wax all over his hands (yes, they are messy, too) I thought I must have been missing something and had my husband take a look--nope they are just a terrible design, not toddler-proof at all. Just get the thick crayons instead--that's what I'll do--he loves to draw but I'm searching for durable...toddler proof!

My just-turned-two twins have now received almost every Crayola TaDoodles product as gifts from well-meaning grandmas, aunts, and friends. These things are those most useless and frustrating line on products Crayola has ever created. First of all, washable crayons for 18mos olds is a stupid idea. Of course they have to taste them-it's a biological necessity!!!-and when they do the crayon instantly dissolves into a watery mess. Disgusting!!! The good old-fashioned crayons are much better for little ones. Second, these big balls are not easier for little hands to hold. My little girls can use a regular crayon just fine, but can't make sense of these silly contraptions. Third, and on to the other TaDoodles products, when I think two year old and markers-it's definitely not the thought of lost lids that sends chills down my spine. It's my daughter pressing down the reinking pad over and over again so that a continual stream of ink pours out all over the place. Reinking pads for a toddler!?!?! PLEASE!! Crayola, please stop selling these horrible products to the unsuspecting grandmas and aunties of America who then inflict them on the poor mothers. Surely, all these problems were quite obvious when you did product testing.

That said, I will say which Crayola products have been good for my toddlers. We've had some success with the TaDoodles stamps. Again, they are hard to hold and my girls have trouble getting it flat on the paper. But I like the little flipping mechanism. The best Crayola product I have found for toddlers are the mini-twistable crayons. They are the right size and they are NOT washables. When my girls get in the mood to chew on them, the plastic casing protects the majority of the crayon and they soon lose interest and go back to coloring.

So in short, Mini-twistables good. TaDoodles bad. VERY bad.

I picked these up at Target. I was excited about these because my 7 mo. old daughter can pick up regular crayons and make marks with them, but she puts them in her mouth a lot. I thought these would be safer. Boy, was I wrong. First, the crayons just fall right out of the holder, which not only means she can put them in her mouth just as easily, but she also couldn't draw with them even *if* she could figure out that she needs to turn the crayon "upside-down" to draw. Second, the design is bad. She picks up the holder from the top and tries to draw with the bottom, which obviously doesn't work! What they should have done is just make a hard hand-shaped crayon that makes marks no matter how it's held, or make it so that the bottom of these make marks. At this point, I am just trying to teach my daughter that she can make marks on paper, and when she does the right movement and then doesn't get a reward (a mark), it's frustrating for me because I can't encourage her. Now I know these are for 12 months, but I don't think they'd be any better for an older baby. The quality is really poor, and I don't think they tested these with kids at all. Right now, I take the crayons out and let her bang these together as entertainment while in her high chair. That's about all they are good for. I am going to try finger crayons, beeswax crayons, or jumbo crayons, but not the Crayola brand.

I bought these for my 15 month old son and he broke them in two minutes. These are not durable for a toddlers at all. I was so excited to see crayons designed for toddlers, but I was disappointed in the durability and overall quality. If I could have I would have given this NO STARS.
