So much fun!
My kids just received this Thanksgiving day as a gift and I am now ordering them for every child I know. It is such a cute idea. Santa sends the elf to watch the children and then the elf reports to Santa every night and comes back to a different spot in the house. My kids wake up with a running start to see who can find the elf first. The kids must name the elf and...

Great idea, not-so-great product
The idea of the elf on the shelf is fabulous, and I have no problem with the author profiting from her great idea. That said, the book is very mediocre and definitely not worth the money. The elf itself, however, is better than getting an older knee-hugger elf and just going with the great idea (which was what I originally intended to do). I think the author should just...

My kids wake up with a running start to see who can find the elf first. The kids must name the elf and they really enjoyed that as well. It is such a nice tradition to help make the Christmas Season even more fun and special. I know it will be with our family for a very long time.

The Elf Is Coming to Our House Every Year!, January 10, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition Elf on the Shelf Gift Set (Toy)
After hearing from friends and reading reviews how great this was, we bit the bullet and got it. I cannot say enough about how cute this was for our two boys (age 6 and 3). They bolted downstairs every morning to find the elf, and the oldest cried when he touched it accidentally because he thought it would lose its magic. The story and elf was the sweetest thing. Note, however, that parents have to remember to move the elf around every night, or come up with creative excuses for why the elf decided to come back from the North Pole into the same spot! :-).

Elf on a Shelf, December 15, 2006
We just received this as a gift. It is perfect for my 3 year old who is having constant struggles with being a good little boy as he grows more independent. We've named our elf and everyday we remind him that his elf is watching him and he instantly stops the negative behavior. He's even told his wish list for Santa to his elf. It's been a great motivational tool for improving his behavior when other techniques have failed. Brilliant idea!!

A Beloved Family Tradition!, November 5, 2007
We received our Elf on the Shelf last December, and he was an instant hit with my 3 little ones (2-6-8). They enjoyed deciding together on a name for him and then raced each morning to see where he was freshly positioned among the house. Always in a clever, funny & overall cute pose....he is fun & easy to help harness your child's imagination. Just don't forget to move him before you go to bed.....!!
The book is lovely and a nice read. I like the 70's, vintage illustrations and overall appeal. Reminds me of my childhood, I suppose. We are looking forward to our 2nd year with "Nuddy" our Elf...he will be reappearing in our home really soon! Although he is a well-contructed doll, I am happy that one of the 'rules' is that the children cannot touch him, or he loses his magic. That has been a blessing, as my children would toss him around if they could, then the dog would find him and he'd be a goner. So, thankgoodness for the sweet, endearing & protective rules the authors thought of.

This is an awsome book, a must have in every home with children. IT WORKS!!! The Elf watches the children day and night and reports to Santa while they sleep, watch your childs behavior shift from Naughty to Nice in an instant! Also fun because they get to see where the elf hid after getting home from reporting to Santa, in a new place every morning!!! GOTTA GET THIS ONE!!!!

Great idea, not-so-great product, January 7, 2009

The elf itself, however, is better than getting an older knee-hugger elf and just going with the great idea (which was what I originally intended to do). I think the author should just sell the elves (with much less packaging) and a small brochure telling parents how to promote the idea, skip the book for kids, and reduce the price by $5.

Fun tradition, January 1, 2009
Durability: Fun: Educational:
I have two girls, ages 4 and 3. I bought this as a way to "remind" them to be good, that Santa is watching. We read the book the day after Thanksgiving and I put the Elf on the shelf. I moved it after they fell asleep and the tradition began! Each morning my daughter would wake me up and pull me around the house to find the Elf. The hardest part about this was remembering to move him. It was a fun, easy thing to do and my girls really got into it. I honestly don't think you have to buy this product to start the tradition but the book explains it all so that ties it all together.

An Additional Idea, November 29, 2007
This is such a wonderful tradition. Because I collect children's Christmas books, I place a different book with our elf each morning. Then, we read a new book together at bedtime. My children look forward to finding our elf and to having a new Christmas story.

My children have had nightmares..., November 13, 2009
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition Elf on the Shelf Gift Set (Toy)
Okay, so I bought this last year assuming my kids would really enjoy it. "Frankie" started to freak them out after a couple of days. Two of my girls 6 & 9 had nightmares! Even in the spring they wanted to know if Frankie was in the attic. lol I heard similar stories from a friend. Good luck.

Your very own Elf, July 30, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition Elf on the Shelf Gift Set (Toy)
Our book and Elf arrived in our home on Thanksgiving and my daughter eagerly read the book and watched us put Elfin on our TV. She knew from the book that each night Elfin would fly to the North Pole and report to Santa. We never scared her with that if she disobeyed he'd cancel Christmas, but said that he was watching her. Every morning she'd come out of her room with a huge smile on her face searching for Elfin. She is looking forward to seeing him arrive at our home this next year!
I got 2 extras for gifts for friends and family and it was a huge hit in their home too!
