Not a cheap gimmick
Unlike so many other 3D toys and products which just frustrate and disappoint - this toy works as advertised! The provided glasses make any bright colors appear to float or plunge back into surfaces. Each color in the rainbow appears at a different depth, so almost anything your child draws will have an interesting 3D result.
The great thing about this is...

Disappointed. Not worth the price.
I read so many great reviews about the 3-D chalk and normally good reviews on Amazon means I'll be happy with the product. Not in this case.
The images do appear to float (slightly) but you need to fill in the images completely and press really hard with the chalk. The chalk iteself breaks and falls apart much quicker than traditional chalk...

Unlike so many other 3D toys and products which just frustrate and disappoint - this toy works as advertised! The provided glasses make any bright colors appear to float or plunge back into surfaces. Each color in the rainbow appears at a different depth, so almost anything your child draws will have an interesting 3D result.
The great thing about this is that the glasses also work with drawings made with markers, pen, crayon, and even computer and video images. Anything with bright colors will pop to life.
Looking up 'chromadepth' on the internet yielded many other images which appear in glorious 3D when wearing the provided glasses.

Eye-Popping, May 25, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
We got this product today when we saw it in the store. I was afraid it would be a disappointment and just cause frustration. But once we started using it we realized what a GREAT product it was! The colors really do jump out at you and make you want to touch them and put your hands through them. We used this with a 5 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. It was perfect for sharing because there was plenty of chalk to go around and they would only use the glasses to see their artwork. After a while the 3 year old really got into it and just kept staring at her work with the glasses on saying "Wow" over and over! Here is a hint for when you first start using it, try to make thick lines or circles colored in with a different color outline. If you just have lines it will look good, but not great. When you have thicker lines or shapes with different colors is when it really POPS!

Disappointed. Not worth the price., July 18, 2008

I read so many great reviews about the 3-D chalk and normally good reviews on Amazon means I'll be happy with the product. Not in this case.
The images do appear to float (slightly) but you need to fill in the images completely and press really hard with the chalk. The chalk iteself breaks and falls apart much quicker than traditional chalk.
The kids couldn't get their images to "float" because they weren't pressing hard enough. I spent a while recreating the images suggested in the directions. The kids were slightly impressed but after looking once or twice with the glasses, they went on to something else.
The pack of chalk lasted one afternoon and provided very little "WOW" factor.
At this price and with these reviews I was expecting so much more. I'd suggest you save your money. You're not missing out on anything "spectacular".

3D does work, sort of, July 12, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
The 3D effect really does work, well sort of. It works best with the red/pink colored chalk, I guess that's why there are 3 of that color in the pack. The glasses have a special lens that picks up reds and pink colors making them look 3D. You can see a similar effect on almost anything of that color other than the chalks.
I tried every color of the chalks and again only the pink/red had the 3D effect. The kids and I had fun with the kit but 15+ dollars is a bit much for chalk.

The Hype is REAL!, June 3, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
Wow..I was amazed at this product. I've seen many commercials on TV and thought this would be a gimmick...and that the 3D effects would be uneffective.
However, boy was I surprised! It works like it says it does...and my kids LOVED it. When you wear the INCLUDED 3D glasses...everything really works as described. I love it! The kids love it!
This is probably the coolest toy all year so far...I'm picking up a few more packs on Amazon as I right this review.
Overall this product is just what everyone says it is...AWESOME. Your kid will love it.

IS IT ALL IT'S "CHALKED" UP TO BE!?, June 28, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
I wouldn't pay as much as I did the second time around. Chalk broke very, very easy and seemed to go fast for as thick as you have to draw the lines to get the 3D to work good. For a one time play time it was fun...

This is a GREAT lower cost present, January 14, 2009
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
Ten to fifteen dollars for a set of chalk probably seems expensive but this really is different and fun. The kids used over half of it the first day they got it and played with it for hours. It's also a pretty good way to teach them how the optical illusion of 3D works.
Considering how many different toys are out there in this price range this is one of the best for the price. It's fun for the kids, since it's outdoor chalk it's not messy (inside :), it's educational and creative, and it doesn't take up a lot of room (i.e. it doesn't junk up the play room) or make annoying noises (or require batteries). It really is just about the perfect small gift.
As a present that the kids will enjoy and the parents will still invite you over it's ideal.

Decent But Not The Best, August 10, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
The chalk doesn't really look 3-D to my child, it seems WAYYYYY too expensive for sidewalk chalk. The "3-D" glasses seem like sort of a gimmick to me. Stick to the cheap old bucket of sidewalk chalk and pass this product by.

Crayola 3D Chalk and Glasses, July 31, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
These glasses are fun to use. They separate the color spectrum to actually make the colors appear to float or sink into a surface. I was a bit disappointed to find out the chalk was the regular Crayola sidewalk chalk used everyday. Essentially you are buying the 3D glasses. The good thing is that any chalk can be used after the chalk provided in the pack is used up, which goes pretty quickly. It can also be used with contrasting colored crayons or markers. Overall, it's a fun project and even young children can see the color separation and "floating" images. It's a good product, but they should just sell the glasses separately and indicate it can be used with regular sidewalk washable chalks.

I liked it, but not sure of the hype..., June 20, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola 3-D Chalk (Toy)
I liked the 3D sidewalk chalk. My only "concern" was that the glasses give off the effect rather than the chalk being special. I don't work for Crayola but it seemed that the chalk was the regular stuff that they sell and the glasses in conjunction with drawing "properly" using thick lines and contrasting colors did the work.
My daughter and I also got the same effect using the new Crayola Color Surge markers and paper (which are also worthy of buying) with the glasses which made me question whether the chalk was special.
