5.0 out of 5 stars Great homebrewing kit
They couldn't have made the process simpler. I love my homebrewing kit. I was delighted that it exceeded my expectations. Everything I needed was in there, just add water and sugar to brew. It included bottles to house my cider, pint glasses, labels for my bottles, etc. You name it, it was included. The price point was fantastic and it is an ideal kit for anyone venturing...

3.0 out of 5 stars Passable for an entry-level hobbyist, but there are better alternatives
Tiring of buying pre-packaged hard apple cider and too often not able to find the brands I like, I decided to give the Mr. Beer Cider Making system a try.

First off, it was missing a rubber washer for the valve. Otherwise though, the cider 'wort' preparation was straightforward and the process from beginning to end went without a hitch. Two weeks later, I...

They couldn't have made the process simpler. I love my homebrewing kit. I was delighted that it exceeded my expectations. Everything I needed was in there, just add water and sugar to brew. It included bottles to house my cider, pint glasses, labels for my bottles, etc. You name it, it was included. The price point was fantastic and it is an ideal kit for anyone venturing into the world of home brewing. I highly recommend it. While I bought it for cider, I can use it to make cider, beer, wine, mead, any manner of fermented beverages. In addition to being a fun process, it saves me money, and I can craft exactly the drink I want.
Any budding brewmeister would be well-served to start with this kit.

Two weeks later, I bottled the brew. Two weeks after that, I tried my first sample.

Plus side: It was nicely fizzy and had some bite. Downside? It was wan and lacking in flavor or character. It tasted almost watered down.

In the meantime, some web searching revealed there are lots of other ways to do simple home brewing -- including just getting some lager yeast, inexpensive 'air-locks' and rubber stoppers from a local brew shop, and adding some sugar (optional) to two $8 gallon jugs of organic unfiltered apple juice from the local Whole Foods. A few weeks later, I used the recycled Mr. Beer empties to bottle the new stuff -- and it was way, way better.

In short, my assessment is the Mr. Beer kit isn't a bad way to get started, and definitely a decent holiday or birthday gift... but there are better ways to go if you want good tasting hard apple cider.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to brew, watery taste 1st week of fermentation, February 1, 2010

We tasted the cider after the minimum time of fermentation, it was almost like apple juice. We are letting it go longer to make a stronger taste. The kit is very easy to use though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little kit, March 6, 2009
This review is from: Mr. Beer Archer's Orchard 2-Gallon Hard Cider Home Brew Kit (Kitchen)
I remember hard cider from my youth and thought this might be fun. The instructions and kit seem to be pretty thorough. I am not all the way through the process, as it takes at least 3 weeks to a month if you do it according to instructions before the cider is ready to drink. Right now I have 8 bottles sitting in a closet, carbonizing. Hopefully next week, I will get a tast and can update this review.
