5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best GPS available for less than $300
I bought & returned 6 different GPS units including the Tom Tom, Garmin and a few others. First, when you enter the address (which is by far the easiest address-entering compared to any of its competitors) it knows where you want to go. It always brought me to the exact spot that i needed to find. It has over 6,000,000 points of interest compared to 1-2 million on...

2.0 out of 5 stars Magellan 1400
I read a lot of reviews AFTER I bought the 1400, and was satisfied I made a good choice when trying out the unit until It made a mistake. I read reviews because I wanted to know about how current the map info was, but couldn't find anyone mentioning that fact. I went on the Magellan web site and found that updates are done via the SD card and are around $75. My personal...

4.0 out of 5 stars Gets Me Where I want To Go Plus!, January 12, 2009
By Steve Mas NJ "Steve" (Washington Twp., South NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 1400 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
I'm very selective about my electronics--probably to a fault. I read the reviews from several spots on the net.
I have a Magellan Roadmate 650 which is several years old and have had no problems except I need to get new maps. I bought this 1400 for my wife. She needs things efficient and not complicated and that's exactly what this unit is. It gets her where she wants to go without complication. The video is crisp. It is loud enough to play the radio and still here and it repeats the next move if you need it to. Taking it on and off is easy. My only minor problem is that this is for a SUV and the little window adapter holder really does not extend out as far as I would like. I just hooked it up to one of the windshield holders from my 650 and it worked great. It would have been nice if the included an adapter to enable it to be plugged in to the wall outlet.

I also like that it came from Amazon. Good price plus I feel comfortable ordering from them. Anytime I have had any problem with a product it is taken care of promptly--no hassles, no questions.

2.0 out of 5 stars Magellan 1400, June 24, 2009
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 1400 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
My personal opinion is that the first update should be free. I am seriously considering returning this unit because I don't know how old the current map data already is. Bought the unit at Radio Shack on sale and don't know how old the unit itself is. I need a version number for the software that I can't locate to date the data. As a second con, put in home address and unit tried to send me way out of the way to go home, so that might be an indication that current map info is pretty old.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roadmate 1400, October 30, 2008
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 1400 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
The sensitivity (i.e., signal reception capability) of the Magellan RoadMate 1400 is better than GPS units that I have used in the past. The sensitivity was demonstrated by the reception, indoors near a window, of six satellite signals. Magellan has recognized that a vehicle driver cannot safely interpret a normal map display while in motion and makes use of a large turn-arrow display, voice commands, and a chime when turns are required. A negative is the inability, by my reading, to update the map data in the unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you for the peace and quiet!, November 18, 2008
By Taxi Mom "Night Court Junkie" (Middle of Nowhere UTAH!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 1400 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
We recently drove round-trip from Utah to Texas. I had been to Texas this summer to help with the birth of our second grandaughter. While I was there I had to drive around Houston, My son-in-law had printed off maps with directions so I could go to the hospital and other places I needed to go. The whole time I was there I was thinking of the "Dreaded Car Trip" when we were going to go back for the baby's blessing - with my husband driving. We live in a very small town (less than 500 people) and going to the city to him means going to a city of 20,000 people. Everytime we have gone somewhere when I have to read directions to him while he is navigating traffic has led to tension, cursing (on his part)and a lot of tongue biting (on my part.)
I decided to buy this GPS before we left, and I have to say it was worth 10 times what I paid! It worked great and my 16 year old son was having a ball finding out all the things it could do. We went to SanAntonio, Houston, Dallas, and a lot of other places between here and there. We got off the worng exit or made a wrong turn a few times, and this wonderful unit had us back on the right road and I never heard one bad word!!!!
This GPS was so easy to use, and I'm so glad I decided to get it!

This is the first GPS I have owned but I must agree with everyone that rated it prior to my purchase it is easy to use updates fast and so far has not sent me astray. I especially like the feature that does not keep telling you it is recalculating (if you do not follow the course it calculates)as my brothers unit does. I would recommend this GPS to anyone that is new to the GPS world and wants an easy to use unit that seems to have many features for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why would you pay more?, November 23, 2008
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 1400 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
This is your basic GPS device that is user friendly, reliable. We're sure there are devices with more features but at our age we're happy just to know how to get there. It doesn't say "recalculating route" if you go wrong or change plans therefore you might not know right away that you missed a turn.

I cannot find anything bad to say about this Magellan GPS Navigator. I was able to use it right out of the box! It's electronic voice is natural and loud enough to hear even with the windows open and the radio playing. The 1400 is also very accurate. I was amazed that the unit was able to find an unmarked dirt road that was not even listed on a paper topo map. The automatic night time view mode is outstanding. I don't like the real bright light in my eyes at night while driving and so having the ability of keeping it mounted on the dashboard was a real plus. There are so many nice features with this unit. I was also able to easily get map updates from the Megelan site.
I love this GPS so much that I have recommended it to my friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money., April 18, 2009
By Savannah AL (Savannah GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Magellan RoadMate 1400 4.3-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Electronics)
I had a mid-grade Garmin that was not as smart as a 3rd grader. On numerous occasions it would send me onto deadend streets in neighborhoods in Savannah. The Magellan has proven far superior. Although they do not get the marketing exposure from the big box stores, seek out a Magellan, you'll be glad you did.

My wife and I had never owned a GPS unit before. At our age (late70's),we
look for an easy to use and understand unit..This Magellan has both of
those qualities, and more..
