Latest Map Guarantee NOT included
Contrary to what other reviewers found in the past, TomTom have recently changed their policy and no longer provide the Latest Map Guarantee for refurbished units. This doesn't just mean you don't get the very latest maps, you might get very old maps (as I did) and it would cost $99 for an upgrade. It gets worse because you can't use MapShare unless you have current maps...

Got this for my wife for Christmas. I was skeptical and took the risk. the GPS arrived in an official TomTom XL-S box. Unit, quick guide, quick set-up / install poster, mount and mounting disc (if needed), car charger, and usb cord. There is a color printed card inside noting the item has been officially refurbished to factory specs. i believe the warranty was shorter (60 or 90 days). At first the unit did not power up, but just needed to charge via USB. Powered up fine after that. The outside of the unit looked brand new as did the other components. There is a more extensive manual online. I believe this full manual comes this way whether new or used. Everything functions like new. You have to donwload TomTom Home from the USA website and update the unit with the lastest updats and the like. The map on the unit WAS and IS an older version. You cannot just download a new set with "Lastest Map Guarantee" from TomTom. This is due to the age unit and nature of being refurbished. HOWEVER, TomTom will allow you to download the lastest map set per there "Lastest Map Guarantee" by simply calling and providing proof-of-purchase. This must be done within 30 days. I had set up my TomTom Home account online prior to calling and the like. This made life easier. two phone calls and three emails later I was off and running with installing the lastest available map set for ths XL-S. Make sure to tell them it is for the XL-S, as the serial number on my unit indicated XL in there system. The box said XL-S and the unit did indeed do spoken street names. There is separate card inside the box on how to enable the function. So far, my wife and I are very happy. Note, after the map install, the internal memory of the unit was pretty much at max. I would get the map update prior to trying to add anything at all the unit outside of the updated drivers from TomTom. Also, back-up the unit using TomTom Home AND copying all the internal contents from the unit to a folder on your computer. That way you are safe in case something happens. The SD memory DOES NOT supplement the 1 Gig internal memory. You will need at least a 2 Gig SD card and literally copy the entire contents of the internal memory, including ALL hidden files, to the SD card. Put the "duplicate" card in the unit after this and it will run off the SD card memory. Internal memory is NOT used, neither is it updated or affected my TomTom Home download and add-ons as long as you are running off the SD card. You will need to leave the card in. This way you will have about 1 Gig of space on the SD card to download voices, etc. Computer voices are the only ones that can read Text-to-Speech. I am not sure if there a limit to the SD card size you can use if higher than 2 Gig as it may only be able to allocate up to 2 Gigs only. If you can use a larger one, the better. So if someone knows this let me know. Again, pleased with the purchase and the fact I could get the latest free one-time map download. Nice big display and accurate (at least in the realm of the competition). Very simple to use, which is a plus. Some of the latest updates give and take away some functional items on the unit (i.e. menus and the way the compass function will changed). This is due to TomTom updating, so don't think you are nuts. Hopefully the change the compass function back to way to was. Worth the risk...YES...if the price is right. AMAZON was very quick to ship and I have never had a problem with them. Only thing I can say about Amazon.com is the way they pack items when shipping them could be better in some cases. Sometimes they use little to know padding. This minimal approach is understandable, but should be item dependent. I have gotten DVD that have been loose inside the DVD box because the DVD box had tons of room to move around inside the shipping box. The GPS unit was packed well. Other than this, Amazon.com is a highly recommended seller in my eyes.

I have been watching the price on the To-Tom over the past two years and when the price dropped on this XL-S, I decided to get one. It may be refurbished, but I couldn't tell it was. Operation was perfect with the exception that the free grade available from the Tom-Tom site wasn't available as being refurbished, it was probably used up. However, support was available for an upgrade at no cost if you work with the home sight on line.I also own the Tom-Tom One (3rd edition) and the later XL-S model does have some improvements, although some of the improvements are a pain to deal with, for example; a bleating noise if one exceeds the speed limit unknowingly. You have to control this noise through the menu options before you start the unit. Also, the computer voice you pick with more voice information to you, is no where near as nice as the pleasant, sexy voice that is available if desired.
All in all, the larger screen is easier to see, especially if you are older as I am.
Great unit and very operator friendly.

This TomTom One XL-S was a "from me, to me" Christmas gift treat. I wasn't sure what to expect since it was a refurbished product, but since it was coming from Amazon, and the price was so unbelievable, I decided to give it a try. Best decision I could have made!
This GPS navigator looks brand new, with not a blemish on it. It worked great straight out of the box, whose contents included full documentation, USB cable, car charger cable, and the windshield attachment accessory. I have since ordered the TomTom travel case, which is perfect for keeping the device and all accessories stored safely when not in use.
In other Amazon reviews, I have seen much made of the fact that the device did not say street names as advertised. Yes it does. Inside my box there was a card with instructions for choosing one of the computer voices during the initial setup process. Its only the "computer voice" (Susan or Dave - English),that can do the text to speech function. The other "regular" voice choices can only give simple directions like turn right, left etc.
I also saw reviews that indicated the purchaser was unable to get a current map upgrade due to the device being refurbished. This is not the case. The process was very simple, just call TomTom tech support @ 866-486-6866, and tell them you have purchased a refurbished XLS. All they will need from you is proof of the purchase (invoice or receipt). So I faxed them my Amazon invoice that came in the box, and called them a few days later. They had processed my invoice, and were able to walk me through downloading my new map update in about one minute. It was very simple, and the people at TomTom were very courteous to me. You must get your map upgrade within 30 days.
I highly recommend the TomTom One XL-S, and don't be afraid to try the refurbished products at Amazon. I know I won't be in the future.

So many wrong reviews out there...
These units come with the map update card in the box... You have to call or email a picture of the map upgrade card inside the box to get the upgrade..
If you do not mention the card, you wont get the update..
My unit came packaged like it was brand new in the retail box.

Very easy to use, like the big screen.
The TOMTOM ONE XL-S is the the lowest priced model with the text to speech for actual street naming; this feature is very nice.
I'm now spoiled and wouldn't want to go on a trip with out it.

I normally do not write a review but my experience was so good I just had to write one. I rely on reviews to make decisions so its only fair for me to give back. With that being said I am very happy with my Amazon purchase of my TomTom One XLS, the purchased unit was refurbished and was agreat bargain at $99.00 with free shipping. I also opened an Amazon credit card and received a $30 credit on first purchase, which makes my net cost of purchase $69.00, can't beat this deal. I was also able to get a free map download from TomTom, all I had to do was upload a copy of my sales receipt and map code that came in the box. In 2 hrs my unit had new maps and was backed up too my computer. Great TomTom support! I am a very satisfied customer, so go ahead and buy refurbished you can't go wrong. The unit arrived quickly and to me it looked brand new. Love, Love

Enjoying this as my first GPS device. Glad I didn't pay full price. I haven't had a chance to play with all the features yet, but I'm really enjoying it. Works like new. The only flaw I found is with the text to speech. It doesn't pronounce non-English names well at all. Considering I live in California, a lot of the the street and city names are Spanish. Makes for a good laugh.

PROS
-Large Screen with lots of information
-Easy to customize your settings
-Text to Speech
-Much easier to enter addresses than the Garmin because of the QWERTY keyboard and it remembers your last city. I had to punch in TEXAS, than AUSTIN every time on the annoying Garmin Keyboard.
CONS
-Rarely, it completely looses the satellite signal, especially at night. If this keeps happening, I'll be giving TomTom a call
-Does not automatically switch to night mode.
My previous GPS was a Garmin C320 and I think the TomTom XLS blows it away because the interface is so much more efficient. It starts pulling up matching cities and streets as soon as you enter one letter. I can find most streets with only three taps. For the price, this refurbished unit is a steal considering it comes with a 4.3 inch screen, TTS and the latest maps.

This is my first GPS and I think I made the right choice. What I was looking for was a wide screen and TTS. Got both for just over $100. Even though this is a refurb there is no way to tell that it is anything other than brand new! I updated the software including the most current map (v8.15 as of 12/3/08). So far the routing and timing is perfect. Today on the way to work I heard the traffic report and selected the part of my route with traffic and told the unit to avoid it. I was quickly (less then a second) rerouted to get off the next exit and take back roads the remainder of my way to work. This is the exact route I would normally take when there is heavy traffic. Routing is very quick to calculate and rerouting when I make a wrong turn is very quick too. So far I have no complaints and probably never will.
