I got this for my 5 yr old grand daughter's birthday. I read the reviews AFTER I got the product and was worried because some said it didn't light up!? BUT it DOES after the brush is held over or dipped into the paint that comes with it. It took about 10 seconds for it to 'recognize' the paint color at first then she was off to the races. Don't waste the money
This uses the Color Wonder Finger paint And Coloring Book. (Which to me isn't really 'mess free'. ) Add batteries to the paintbrush and the brush lights up the color of the finger paint as it is dipped in the color. The only draw back is there isn't alot of the paint and it's a clear gel, but you can buy more of it and different colors than the primary ones it comes with. The brush is 'chunky' so it's perfect for little hands. Says it won't work on any other surface like other paper other than what comes with it and that remains true. So there is NO mess or accidents of carpets, tables, bare floors, etc. I'd highly reccomend this product to anyone IF you can find it. That was one very difficult thing we ran into. Found it at Johnny's toys store in Covington Ky and it was the LAST ONE but they held it for me. :)

This uses the Color Wonder Finger paint And Coloring Book. (Which to me isn't really 'mess free'. ) Add batteries to the paintbrush and the brush lights up the color of the finger paint as it is dipped in the color. The directions say 'clean the brush after dipping it into each color'!! For a 4 yr old they want to mix all the colors, and they still want to put their fingers in it, to finger paint.
The 'light brush' is neat when it lights up, but to put batteries in, having to wipe the brush clean after dipping into each paint, then having to wash the brush after each use, you might was well just get the plan old finger paints. My child wanted to still put her fingers into the 'mess free paint' too, so I then had to wash her all up. I didn't think this was 'mess free' as advertised, a bit time consuming cleaning, and why spend the extra money for a 'light brite' brush you have to clean.

Bad for lefties & expensive supplies, December 25, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Toy)
Both my kids are lefties and I didn't realize this product was really for right-handed kids. The brush attaches to the right side of the pain base instead of in the middle like many other products. In the picture the child is holding the brush with his left hand, but he is to the side of the paint set not in front of it as the product is intended to be used. I would not recommend this product for a lefty.
Also, you have to use their paint and paper. That is significantly more expensive than basic paints. Im not sure cleanup is actually easier. You clean up paint with color or this colorless form, but there is still 'paint' to clean up.
Fun factor- both my kids love this. It is more fun than basic paint. They definitely prefer this to regular paint!
My kids would give this product 5 stars. I give it 2 stars because it is awkward for a lefty to use. The supplies are very expensive and cant be substituted. I couldn't find extra paint or paper where I bought the product either. I worry about finding supplies. I would not have bought it but it was the only thing my daughter asked santa for.

What a dissapointment!, December 26, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Toy)
My sister bought this toy for my daughter for Christmas because my daughter LOVES to paint. Even though it says ages 5+, my 4 yr old daughter is WAY too advanced in her artwork to use this toy.
Color Wonder products are really only artistically suitable for toddlers. Children can't see what they are making because it takes a few seconds for the colors to appear. The brush is also very clunky and the paint was sticky, so she was not even able to make the simplist shapes or write her name.
The colors are very muted - "red" is actually a washed out pink. This wouldn't be a problem but they don't match the colors on the lids. My daughter waited and waited for it to "finish" turning from clear into the color shown, but only the yellow and purple are bright.
The brush doesn't light up except when it is next to the paint jar. The box clearly shows the brush lighting up over the paper while painting - so maybe this one is defective. It might have been more fun if she could have painted with the light up brush. We would have taken it back, but all the stores are closed on Christmas day!!
My daughter was constantly frustrated - despite that, she TRIED really hard to like this new toy from her favorite aunt.
It's only the day after Christmas, she only has 5 or 6 scribbly looking paintings, the paint is over half gone, and the batteries are already dead!
What a dissapointment!

This is definitely a NO MESS paint kit!, December 9, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Toy)
I was worried what this would be like when my daughter received this as a gift last month. But she absolutely loves it and the brush is great for those little hands too. It is totally mess free and there are refills out there. I have found that Target carries a bigger supply of this than most stores. I just read some reviews about this on here and we haven't ran down the batteries yet and I have no problems w/ this item at all. I plan to get this for my friends daughter right now and ship it to her for her birthday. This is great for the little ones that want to learn how to paint and get out of that finger painting stage. I hope this review helps and you will be happy with this product I am sure.

Very fun, January 8, 2009
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Toy)
This product is very fun and will keep your kid busy for a long time.
They will run out of paper quickly though.
The colors could be a little more truer, they are pretty pale.
I would recommend this product, especially to older children.

Fun Paint Set, December 27, 2008
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Toy)
I bought this paint for my 4-year-old daughter for Christmas. I don't like paint. I don't have any in the house. It's just too messy. Then I saw this product and thought I would give it a try. I know she loves to paint and this seemed like a good compromise for us. She tried it out and we are both very happy with this product. The brush lights up in the color of the paint pot that you hold it over, so you know what you will be getting on your brush. Then you paint it on the special paper and the paint magically appears. I like that when you dip the brush into another color you don't really get any mixing of the colors on the page. The colors come out bright and it looks like regular paint even after it dries. It doesn't matter if the gel from the paint pots get on clothes or carpet, because it's clear and easy to clean up. The whole system is east to clean and everything stores together. This is certainly a hit in my house, for both my daughter and myself.

I bought this product for my 10 year old daughter. She wants to be an art teacher and is constantly drawing and painting. I knew she would love this and she does. She is just amazed by how this thing works.
I also bought it for my 8 year old niece. I had her name in my family's grabbag for Christmas. She absolutely loves it.
I highly recommend this toy!!

Avoid this product, January 17, 2010
Durability: Fun: Educational:
This review is from: Crayola Color Wonder Magic Light Brush (Toy)
It is misleading--the brush lights up over a clear gel to let you know what color it is--but the gel is thick and difficult to paint with--the paint brush is thick as well making it impossible to paint with detail.
