Lots of fun to play, but overall just a bit disappointing., November 6, 2008
Fun:
I was eager in anticipation of this title. Quality fps is a genre that leaves much to be desired on the Wii. Heck... QUALITY games are lacking on the Wii, with only a handful of worthy titles in the entire catalog of games. So, I had really high hopes for the game. I will say that, without a doubt, this game is worth buying. Many sites have reviewed this game quite harshly, in my humble opinion. The basic game play is solid, and there are some really good things about this game. Some of the cut-scenes are really cool, the music and voice acting are top-notch, and the online is really well done (I experienced absolutely ZERO lag). That said, I did have a few gripes with this game. First, there are some framerate issues. During some of the more intense action scenes, the game seemed to hang a bit, and that was disappointing. Also, I am not sure how I feel about the quality of the presentation. The cut-scenes are really well done. However, while actual gameplay had some really well done portions (the backgrounds are beautiful in some parts), the character design and detail were pretty weak. Bonds hands (from the FPS perspective) looked like a pair of pig hoofs sloppily holding a gun. Overall, the game looks presentable... but I cant help but wonder if Beenox (the game developer) could have done better. I look at some of the late PlayStation 2 titles (like Metal Gear 2).... and a lot of them look better than most Wii games. This game really looked a lot like CounterStrike 1 or Half-Life 1 (which were GREAT games 5 years ago). It plays a lot like them too. To sum things up:
The Good:
*Controls are really well done, in my opinion. I just wish there was support for the gamecube controller or the classic controller, since not everyone likes using the wiimote+nunchuck. I do like the wiimote+nunchuck, so this worked well.
*The menus are well done and easy to navigate
*The online portion utilizing Nintendo WFC is really stable. I am not sure how many people can play in one game at a time. I have heard as many as 12 and I have heard as low as 4... and I think at one point in one of the games I played as many as 5 or 6 people were in. Playing online, I experienced zero lag, and the online games were really fun, and the levels are large... plenty of places to seek cover and snipe! And yes, Goldeneye fans... there are PROXIMITY MINES! ;)
*Quality voice acting and cut-scenes... not to mention you get to hear the new Bond song before the movie even comes out~!
*You get a free movie ticket to watch the Quantum of Solace movie when you buy the game! (No kidding! ) The ticket is in the instruction manual and can be redeemed between Nov 14 and Dec 18 (or somewhere around then). This was a pleasant surprise for me!
*Local split screen play: I cant wait to try this. I haven't had a chance to yet, but the game play is solid online, so local play will be great. The only problem is that if you want 4 friends to be able to come over and play, you will need 4 wiimotes and 4 nunchucks! =(
*Some aspects of the presentation during gameplay are really cool: Enemies react different when shot in different parts of the body. The 3rd person cover system works really well. Enemy AI was also quite surprising. Enemies will run for cover and will flank you. I noticed that the enemy AI was more impressive when you played the game taking advantage of cover and stealth. If you just charge a group of enemies, they react like dumb bots... but when you try to use cover and stealth, they will do the same. Overall, I was happy and was challenged.
The Bad:
*Every now and then during intense action sequences (like at one point when the building that I was in was on fire and stuff was exploding all over the place as I tried to escape), the frame rate dropped significantly. Overall, the game seems to run smooth, and this issue was definitely the exception, not the norm. But, this was still disappointing!
*Presentation was a bit of a let down. The levels give a nice feeling of being wide open for exploration, but things can get kinda buggy. For instance, some low walls cant be jumped over, while others cant. I hate how bonds hands look when holding a handgun. They look better when holding other weapons, and I guess that this really isnt a big deal... more of a gripe. I just wish that this game looked a bit more polished like Metroid Prime 3 (or the Conduit!!!), but again, the graphics are kinda hard to call! It looks great at times, and not so great at other times. Overall, I would rate the graphical presentation at about a 6 or 7 out of 10 (as far as Wii games go... :[ )
*No alternative control schemes. My friends who don't have a Wii like to use GameCube controllers for most games, so they will be disappointed.
All in all, I am pleased with this game, and got what I wanted...a satisfying fps/action game to keep me busy until The Conduit comes out!

Quantum of Solace Wii, November 4, 2008
Fun:
"The best bond game since Goldeneye" was pretty close. Quantum of Solace is a first person/third person hybrid shooter, which has you use an array of weapons, grenades, and takedowns to advance through single player. Whenever you crouch behind a wall or an object, it switches into third person and you can see Bond. Quantum of Solace consists of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace so you get to play through both movies! Let me tell you, the missions are very interesting, fun, and makes you think becuase, after all, Bond's greatest weapon is his mind. The AI is also very intelligent and will do anything to kill you.
The multiplayer is a blast if you have four friends. Otherwise, stick to single player and online. It's great for parties and gatherings, though, and for your Xbox lover friends who only play FPS's.
The real meat of the game comes in the online mode. Using Nintendo WFC, you can connect online and play a free for all or an objective race in teams or alone. It is the best part of the game I'll tell you that.
The controls are really simple and are great to pick up & play. I'd recommend using the Wiimote and Nunchuck and not the Zapper. The control is harder with the Zapper. With B to shoot and A to crouch, you'll be on your way to 007 in no time!
Overall, Quantum of Solace is, in my opinion, the second best Bond game since Goldeneye. The first being Nightfire. I loved that game. Overall, I'd give it a 8.5/10. Buy it!

Highly entertaining single player, addicitive multiplayer., November 5, 2008
Fun:
When I heard about this game I wasn't expecting much. All the games after Goldeneye have been decent but overall a disappointment. Well Goldeneye fans rejoice, this is hands down the best Bond game to come out since the N64 classic.
The single player is very cinematic and exciting retaining the old school feel with modern touches. I think new fans and old fans will be very happy.
As for the multiplayer, it is amazing! It isn't redefining the genre by any means but it is just plain fun and highly addictive. The cover system works perfect and I really like the credit system to upgrade your weapons. It uses the same engine as Call Of Duty 4 and since I played the hell out of that jumping into a Team Conflict match in Quantum Of Solace feels very natural.
Even though Gears Of War 2 will be coming out soon and I will be spending most of my time playing that I am still very glad I bought this. Its a refreshing change from the games that try to do too much. Overall, highly recommended.

An Overlooked Gem, November 10, 2008
Fun:
This review is from: James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (Video Game)
With a slew of more notable shooters set to be released around the same time as "Quantum of Solace," it was to be expected that not much attention would be paid to the latest "007" title. And that is a pity. Especially for those gamers who've had their fill of aliens and beige-hued war zones. The Playboy-esque high-style of Bond's latest adventure might be just what they're looking for.
Though the graphics aren't quite textured or shaded as nicely as they could have been, they serve their function in conveying the elegant atmosphere which makes up the secret-agent mystique. When you're running around the rooftop of an opera house with a silenced sniper rifle, or engaged in a sub-machine gun firefight in the Romanesque spa of a luxury hotel, you can't help but feel that your coolness factor just rose a couple of notches. And the gameplay weaves seamlessly into these settings. You can take cover behind just about any object, triggering a toggle from your default first-person perspective to a comprehensive third-person view of Bond and his surroundings (think "Rainbow Six")--extremely useful when facing flanks of enemies that would otherwise overwhelm you. "Takedowns" are useful tactics for silent killings, or when you're out of ammo and the option of reloading just wouldn't be quick enough. The only complaint I have with this feature is that often times when you're facing two or more enemies in close quarters and you go for a takedown, you're then spun around and left facing a different direction, and if you're not quick in figuring out exactly what direction you need to turn back to in order face the remaining foe(s), you're pretty much dead.
Unlike most other shooter titles, all the action takes place while on foot. There are no vehicle pursuits. However, there is a point in the game when you shoot from a mounted machine gun on a helicopter, but the copter is grounded, having just crashed. However, the battles on foot were engaging enough that I personally didn't even realize this until after the game was over. But it's worth mentioning for those who may be partial to vehicle gameplay.
In the end, the only real complaint I'd have is that I wish there was more. You could complete the game in under six hours on your first go-around, and when it's over you're left wishing there was at least a few more hours worth of game. But then again, if you're left wanting more, what you did get probably wasn't all that bad of a thing. It certainly wasn't in this case.

Surprisingly good, November 11, 2008
Fun:
When a multi-console game, especially a tie-in for a movie, gets released, the PS2 usually ends up with a watered down port. While Quantum of Solace for the PS2 may not be anywhere as technically powerful as its next-gen counterparts, it instead takes a whole new spin on the game. Instead of using a first-person view like the next-gen versions, the PS2 Quantum of Solace instead uses a third-person, over the shoulder viewpoint, which works quite well to its advantage. Incorporating some stealth missions helps the game's case as well, as this PS2 version ends up feeling reminiscent of the pretty good From Russia With Love game from EA that came out a few years back. For a late in life PS2 game, Quantum of Solace looks and plays pretty well, despite a few technical bugs. The only real flaw with Quantum of Solace is that the game is quite, quite short; and once you finish it, there isn't anything left to do. No extras or even a multiplayer mode are included, which is a big disappointment. Still, the PS2 version of Quantum of Solace is a surprisingly good game while it lasts, and even more surprising is how better it is than its next-gen version brethren. Definitely worth checking out if you're still holding on to your PS2 and are a Bond fan or craving some pretty decent action.

Worth the money, November 7, 2008
Fun:
This review is from: James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (Video Game)
Best bond game since Goldeneye.
I love the third person playing. You can set you target and then shoot. It is nice because you feel like you are really in the action, and can take sometime setting up until a grenade is throne where you are hiding.
Only problem with the game is that you can't play multiplayer just in your home with others on the one playstation. You can only play multi online. I wish these guys who design these games would keep that aspect into the multiplayer. Not everyone plays online all the time. What are suppose to do when you have friends over. I guess we will have to play Madden or other sports games becasue they undertand that concept. This is the only reason this game is getting four stars, or I would give it five.

Call of Solace, November 18, 2008
Fun:
This review is from: James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace (Video Game)
When i first heard the new James Bond game release was going to be built around the Call of Duty 4 engine, i've been waiting eagerly to get my hands on it.
Offline, it's an amazing game. This game jumps back and forth between the events of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. The levels are very detailed. The enviroments are more destructible than Call of Duty 4, which definately adds to the full Bond expirence. Some levels have diverted dramatically from the movie. Such as La Chiffre's abduction by Obono includes the hotel being secured by his militia. I understand that between the two movies, they needed to expand for a better game expirence. Levels that were closer to the movie scenes were amazing. The sinking apartment in Venice couldn't have been pulled off any better, in my opinion. The game incorporates a third person view for around the corner shooting like in the Rainbow Six franchise. Another added feature that definately improves the gameplay. One feature i did not care for was the QTE events. Buttons flash on the screen, you must quickly respond or risk losing a hand to hand fight. Most QTE is done while in close quarters, and is up to the player how little or how much it's utilized. The boss sequences require the QTE system, but seems more entertaining than previous bond games with the generic helicopter or dual rocket launcher wielding soldier.
Sadly, one hindering factor in my opinion is the multiplayer. Not nearly as crisp as Call of Duty 4. You earn cash per round to purchase your choice of weapons, upgrades, and special abilities. I like the freedom of choosing what to get next, rather than suffering through several firearms and perks you could care less to ever use. Various modes seem like they were borrowed from the Metal Gear Online series, along with the classic free for all and team death match. Over all, characters look and feel clunky. The learning curve is harsh because of the buy-what-you-want system for more expirenced and aggressive players. Overall, i think the multiplayer was not polished over to make the release date.
PROS:
-CoD4 Graphics engine
-Great offline level designs
-Levels chalk full of enemies to compete with a Bond movie body count
-Added over the shoulder cam to fire around corners and blind fire is definately what CoD4 was lacking.
-Most levels are very fast paced, adding to the Bond expirence
CONS:
-Online Multi-player is definately lacking
-The "hacking" sequence of unlocking doors gets rather old very fast
-The gun selection seemed fairly small compared to previous Bond games
-No real special bonuses after completion of the game such as unlocked guns
-The final stage's high difficulty is ridiculously unbalanced from the rest of the game.
-Fairly short. Game was beaten on medium difficulty within two (long) sessions.
Overall, i highly recommend this game offline. Honestly, a lot about this game reminds me of the original Goldeneye 64. The levels are extensive with tons of villians between you and the objective. The physics, destructible enviromets, and overall gameplay layout make you want to replay levels over and over again. EA could've spent more time on certain aspects, but compared to other movie based games rushed to coeincide with the theatrical release, this definately could have been much worse. DO NOT buy this game if you're looking for solid online multiplayer, very long first time through gameplay (such as RE4), or can't play a game again once you've beaten it. If you can enjoy a well made FPS, playing the levels again and again you won't be disapointed.

Best Bond Game Since Goldeneye, November 4, 2008

Great fun and awesome gameplay, January 7, 2009
Fun:
Eventhough the graphics are not super amazing, this is truly the best Bond game since Golden Eye. I love the new features it has, the fighthing sequences and the over all game experience it brings to Wii owners. This is not just the Quantum game, a large part of the game includes Casino Royal stages too. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the game froze-down during some video playbacks a couple of times. I do recommend it for everybody.

All in all, it's not bad, November 5, 2008
Fun:
Generally, I'm pretty wary of movie-license games, but Bond games have a much better track record than most. While Quantum of Solace for the DS is not brilliant, nor is it as flashy or edgy as its Xbox 360 or PS3 counterparts, it's still a pretty solid gaming experience, if your expectations are realistic. It's not for everybody, and I'm more forgiving than some in certain areas, so let's go over some pros and cons...
The Good Stuff:
-UPGRADES. Throughout the game, you'll collect poker chips which you can trade in for Bond points after each mission (completing a mission also awards you with Bond points). With these points, you can purchase upgrades for your weapons, your stealth skills, your melee skills, your ammunition, and you can increase your odds of finding randomly placed bonus items. It's not full blown RPG, but it adds to the experience. It's fun to "build your own Bond."
- CARDS. Aside from poker chips, you'll also collect playing cards, which you can add to your "deck" on the Inventory screen. These cards up your stats on various things, and the level of upgrade depends on the number of the card. Hearts add to Health, Spades upgrade weapons, Clubs pump up your Melee ability and Diamonds increase your chances of finding goodies.
- STEALTH. I was surprised how effective the stealth takedown system was. With only a quick tap of any button outside the touch-screen (your choice), you can quickly take down any enemy you've successfully snuck up on. On top of that, sneaking gets easier as you go, as your speed while crouched can be upgraded as you go through the game.
- MELEE. It takes a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you'll give Jason Bourne a run for his money. I remember when I first played 007: Everything or Nothing on Gamecube, and they had finally given Bond the ability to do some wicked hand-to-hand combat (no more of that ridiculous, ineffective Goldeneye slapping). With the touch-screen, you'll eventually learn a whole slew of combos, allowing you to punch, kick, grab, break arms, and throw enemies into breakable obstacles. Sweet!
- GUNS. The fact that each and every gun (even guns of the same type) have varying stats on damage and accuracy etc. is impressive and helps to add an RPG element to the game. My approach is usually more stealth than run-`n-gun, but there are several types of guns to choose from, which I wasn't really expecting, to be honest. Pleasant surprise.
- VOICE ACTING. Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, and several others lend their voices to the game. It's not a big thing, but it definitely adds to the authenticity of the experience.
- MUSIC. While it never sounds great coming through the tiny DS speakers, I do appreciate the actual use of David Arnold's score music for the movies. The classic Bond theme is used frequently throughout, as it should be.
The (Minor) Bad Stuff:
- CONTROLS. It's not that the controls are just outright bad. But consider this a warning: the game's dynamic will take a while to get used to. Be patient, and you will get used to doing nearly everything on touch-screen. It took me a couple hours to really get good at quickly navigating my options while in the midst of a battle, but I can now trudge along pretty briskly with no problems.
-TOUCH-SCREEN SHOOTING. While touch-screen aiming was tackled quite well in Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, it would seem that our favorite Double-O is not quite as accurate. To be fair, it works well enough most of the time, but every now and then you'll find yourself too close to some obstacle, or on the edge of the screen, and Bond will begin firing in random directions no matter how accurately you tap the enemy onscreen.
- INVENTORY. Reminds me of Resident Evil a bit. I quickly found myself running out of room in my inventory. This was largely because I was actually finding too much ammunition. That's probably a good thing for a lot of people because, well, I mentioned the touch screen aiming problem. It probably has more to do with my approach. I very much prefer stealth takedowns and hand to hand combat over blasting away with an Uzi (which you'll do plenty of in this game). Even so, it's a little sad when taking on opponents hand to hand leads to a quicker kill than just shooting them.
- RELOAD! Honestly, I shouldn't have to open my inventory every time I need to reload my gun. I should note that a quick button for reload can be added to the main screen as you earn Bond points. This can be done fairly early in the game (I recommend it, and a second quick button for Health), but seriously, we shouldn't have to work for these hot-keys, they should already be there when the game starts.
- NO MULTIPLAYER. I don't know that multiplayer would even work in a game of this sort. I don't often do much multiplayer anyway, so it doesn't really bother me. But it will bother some.
All in all, for me the positives outweigh the negatives. I bought this at full price, and I'm not disappointed. I will say again that this isn't for everyone, but with the right approach, I think you'll be very happy with it. I would also recommend you check out some gameplay vids that people have uploaded onto Youtube, just to give an idea of how the game works before you take the plunge and purchase.
