4.0 out of 5 stars Camera is good, instructions poor
The camera works as advertized but the instructions are poor. This is my third game camera. The first was a 35mm some years ago, it wasted film and did not perform well, I took it back. The second was a very cheap Wildview that worked good but then died, I took it back (the company suggest that and did not volunteer to fix it). The Cuddeback worked well but the rotary...

4.0 out of 5 stars Camera is good, instructions poor, September 13, 2008

The camera works as advertized but the instructions are poor. This is my third game camera. The first was a 35mm some years ago, it wasted film and did not perform well, I took it back. The second was a very cheap Wildview that worked good but then died, I took it back (the company suggest that and did not volunteer to fix it). The Cuddeback worked well but the rotary switch is hard to set and I had to put a white dot on the pointy end so I could see what setting I was making. Then the SD card was not being recognized by the camera and I turned to the Cuddeback Web site. It only said I had to format the card on my computer but did not say how. I downloaded the free Trophy Room software but the HELP feature would not work. Then I tried ordering a manual but there is no manual available. Then Trophy Rooom moved all of My Pictures to it's program on my computer and it took several hours to move them back. I removed Tropy Room from my computer and now only use Windows picture program to process my game camera picutes. And don't bother calling the company this time of year, it must be hunting season back there and they don't answer the phone. After two days I solved the SD card problem by myself and have taken some very good pictures of raccoons and skunks stealing my cat's food on the front porch and the deer stealing alfalfa hay from the barn. I would reccomend paying a bit more and buy the Cuddeback with the IR flashless feature.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cuddeback Excite, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
Hey this is Cody, and I hope people can get something from my review as follows. I'm a huge hunter and have used several 'modern' game cameras for my own use as well as for work (wildlife research).
I have used Wildview, Stealth Cam, Moultrie and Cuddeback Excite.
The Excite seemed to be a great camera for a few months then had a problem with the battery not making connection.
Got a new piece (basically a recall part (but Cuddeback won't admit it)) and it worked better for another 2 months.
Then I needed a new circuit board, got that fixed under warranty.
Then a few months later the camera takes 5 minutes to start and won't transfer pictures so basically the camera is worthless and will cost a lot to fix so it sits not be used.
1.I'll be honest, the Cuddeback has quick trigger times (compared to others I've used).
2. The pictures seem pretty darn good!
3. Battery life seemed decent (although it always had problems)

I would love to rave this camera up as it worked very well when it worked, but with all the cameras i've used I would rather have something that isn't as quick or have as great pictures and saves me time and money and would just work.
I'm directly relating this to the Moultrie I-40. It's a great simple camera, that in most ways doesn't beat others. But the batteries last a long time (3+months) and I haven't had a problem to date ( 8 months)!
Hopefully cuddeback has figured out their problems and if they continue to have problems back up their product for longer periods if they are going to be selling items for $200 or more!

Cody

5.0 out of 5 stars Best camera I have owned to date!, December 3, 2008
By W. Klingerman (East Central PA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
Over the past 6-7years I have owned several trail camera's. The cuddeback capture has been my best to date. I have it about two months and it has taken about 1000 pix. A lot of small animals which I could avoid by setting the camera a little higher on the tree.

The hair trigger is fabulous. I have pix of birds flying by the camera, rabbits running, squirrels running, bucks chasing doe, etc., without blurring.

I put batteries in when I got the camera and they are still going strong, which had been one of my chief complaints of other camera's in the past.

It is very easy; the easiest so far to setup and use. I had no problem with the SD cards and can view them with my camera or computer without a problem.

The only negative is that about one out of every 70 pix seems to be underexposed for some reason. It's not the flash because it happens on sunny days too.

The pictures are sharp and crisp enough that I can see details on most of the animals.

I am very pleased with this camera!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cuddeback Capture, December 6, 2008
By bbeltram "Brad" (Central IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
I have owned several other low-end trail cameras in the past. None even come close to the quality and performance of the Cuddeback. The camera works just as advertised. Very easy set-up, long battery life and clear pictures both day and night.

I did have some trouble with the camera not recognizing the SD card. Once I reformatted the card on my computer, I was good to go. One other nice feature of the Cuddebacks is they offer a steel "Bear Safe" box. You can lag bolt the box to a tree and padlock the camera inside. Might be a deterrent to someone looking to steal the camera.

I highly recommed this camera.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cuddeback Capture-Lousy Customer Service!!!!!!, October 12, 2009
This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
I bought 3 Cuddeback Capture Game Cameras before Christmas 2008. I gave one to my son-in-law for his Christmas present. I paid around $200.00 for each one and used them for one month in Jan 2009. I was pleased with this camera for the one month and put it up for the 2009 hunting season. All three cameras have failed on the first use this year. They were well taken care of by me as it was an investment because it was not a lower rung game camera. I called Cuddeback customer service and I was not pleased. They wanted $75.00 to repair each camera, plus shipping. If you want to pay to use a game camera for one month for $200.00 and then it not work, then this camera is for you. I personally was put off by there customer service and will never buy another cuddeback for the sorry customer service that I received. They DO NOT not stand behind their product. To give due credit I did not keep the bill I received for these cameras, and I asked them to look up my warranty that I sent in and they told me they did not have access to it. SOME SERVICE!!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, June 20, 2009
This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
This camera is not worth the money. I know it is one of Cuddebacks cheaper models, but when compared to the other trail cams out there it is expensive. The way it fastens to a tree is pretty primitive. Anyone can walk up to it and take it off with no tools or keys. The other trail cams I have all utilitze a bracket that gets screwed to a tree, and the camera then gets padlocked to it. Not to mention, the other cameras I have are all password protected, so if someone did steal it, it would be of no use to them. With the Cuddeback, someone can walk off with it and use it themselves with not trouble. I do like the fact that the trigger speed is quick, which is why I spent the money on the Cuddeback. All I am saying is that you are paying 200+ dollars only for that feature. I know they also rave about the longer battery life. I don't care about that. If a trail cam has the capability of allowing the batteries to power it for any length of time over 3-4 weeks, that's good enough for me. I guess one could argue that having batteries that last 6 months will save you some loot, but if you're spending 200+ dollars on a camera, you shouldn't complain about spending 6 bucks on a pack of batteries. As far as the memory card, I don't care for how it just gets pushed into the slot. The other cameras I have (Bushnell) have a docking station that secures the memory card. You push the card into it, and it clicks to let you know its engaged. When you want to remove it, you have to push it in further, and that releases the card, which then pops out. With the Cuddeback, you just have to trust that you have pushed the card in far enough to make the connection. Pretty cheap if you ask me. If I had to do it over, I would not spend the money on this model. Perhaps some of the higher end Cuddebacks don't have this poor quality, but I won't ever know because I won't buy one again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Camera, November 12, 2009

This is a great camera for any hunter wanting to get pictures of the bucks that he will never see in real life. The only thing that this camera doesn't come with that it should is a lock. There is a place where a pad lock can be added to it, but you will have to purchase it seperate. I just used the lock off of my Bushnell Camera and threw the bushnell in the trash. The bushnell was the worst camera I have had except for one of the older stealth cams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent camera for the price, April 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
I've owned several trail cams over the years. Stealth Cam, Moultrie, Leaf River, Cuddeback. Now that the digital cameras are more affordable, I've switched all of them out with digital. So far, I'm relatively happy with the cuddeback. I opted for the capture with flash because it was cheaper and I own other IR cameras. I use the Cuddeback in areas where I'm not concerned about spooking animals, and my IR cameras in areas where the wildlife (deer, and coyote) are easily spooked.

Pros:
-So far battery life is pretty decent.
-Trigger speed is one of the better I've had.
-Set-up is so easy it's not even funny.
-Pictures are crisp in the day. Flash distance at night is decent. (I don't get hung up on how many megapixels a camera has. 3.0 MP is sufficient for any game camera. Megapixels only matter if you plan on blowing pictures up past 8"x10" photos)
-Small compact design is very beneficial for securing flush to trees. I made the mistake of putting it out in a heavy bear area. Because it's so slim and I had it secured so tight against the tree, it survived three curious bears (two yearlings and an adult female). They twisted it on the tree and chewed part of the hinge off, but camera is fully operational. I also own a Moultrie I-40, which also was accosted by bears. It's a big, bulky camera and has a large profile on a tree. It made it very easy for the bears to grab ahold of it and rip it off the tree. Side note: I now have purchased bear security boxes for all of my cameras.

Cons:
-SD Card doesn't lock in to place and is halfway exposed. Not a big deal, but I never feel like the card is making a secure connection. So far it has.
-Camera lid opens from bottom up and there's only one hole at the bottom to thread a master lock python cable through, which means I have to remove the cable every time I want to get into the camera to switch out the card. (I ordered a custom bear security box to alleviate this issue.)
-Although the operation of the camera only requires a turn of the knob, there is limited option to customize settings (ie, only take day or only night photos, setting to take "x" number of photos per minute, detection range settings, etc.)
-There is no picture count display, so you don't know if the camera is operating or taking pictures. I swap the memory card in the field and hope that when I get back to my computer I'll have pics on it. Not very convenient if you can only check your cams on a limited basis.
-Camera has time and date stamp but I wish it had temp. and moonphase like Moultrie's do.
-There are no angle adjustments, so you can't fine tune to what degree you want your camera pointing up or down when it's secured to a tree.

Aside from the cons, which are not deal breakers, if you're looking for a decent camera, this has enough pros for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Capture is OK !, February 24, 2010
By Huckie (Western N Y) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cuddeback Capture Game Scouting Camera (Sports)
First I had a Excite, anyone who had one knows they had a battery connect problem, Cuddeback revamped it , works well for me 5 years worth, Then I got 3 Capture, No problems at all and if you can't figure this camera out in about 20 seconds on how to set it up you got no business even using a deer camera !
I've had 9 different cuddeback cameras and only had 1 go bad after 6 years ( I had it repaired ) . Love the Capture !!!
