I live in South Dakota, and for those of you who don't know- it can get VERY COLD here. Right now we're having a little "arctic blast" as the weather service calls it and our high temp today was -1 degrees Farenheit, with wind chills 30-40 below. We have a nice, but older 1960's home with old insulation and windows, plus hardwood floors which makes it harder to keep the rooms warm. This heater is a new model for Delonghi, so there weren't any reviews out there when I bought it so I took a chance on it, and I'm glad I did. It kicks out alot of heat, has a programmable thermostat, and has the option of oscillating which spreads the heat around quite well. As far as the loudness goes, yes it is a bit loud for some people, but certainly not even close to a hair dryer!! . But you do get used to it and its great for white noise if you need that to sleep at night. The only thing I dislike about it is that it beeps every time you change a setting, or move it, which is a little annoying. Overall I like this heater VERY much, it puts out alot more heat than our other Delonghi- the DCH1030 (smaller, non-oscillating, no remote, not programmable)- and even that one is a good heater. We use the DCH4590ER in the evenings after work in the living room while keeping the house thermostat at about 67 degrees. When its time for bed we move it to the bedroom and set the house thermostat set at 62 degrees to save on gas. In the bedroom we set the DCH4590ER's thermostat set at 67, sometimes 66 degrees, and we are very comfortable under our down comforter. We put our Delonghi oil filled heater in the living room at night for the cats. It keeps the chill off the room nicely and keeps the house heat from kicking on as often. The trick to using these heaters is to not expect them to warm up an ice cold room instantly. It won't happen. But if you just want to keep your house thermostat set lower to save on your heat bill, and use these as supplemental heat sources, they are great. I will update this when I get my next months bills and see if these electric heaters saved me any money.

I have an elderly family member with a lower-circulatory problem and limited mobility, so we needed something to heat localized areas of the house to keep her comfortable. This space heater remote controlled, adjustable thermostat filled the requirements perfectly. Unlike other reviewers, I have no problem with the fan noise -- it's a small unit and has to "blow" the air -- not terribly loud, but noticeable, definitely not a deterrent for us. The added safety feature (turns off when tipped over) works and has saved us from a couple of mishaps (inadvertent bumps with the wheelchair). It works well in relatively small spaces, heats in seconds, and has proven to be very reliable so far. I'm considering one for the home office (for use in the cooler mornings/evenings).

2.0 out of 5 stars Okat Heater, But Needs Better Design, March 1, 2009

I've had this heater for 2 weeks now. I've had several space heaters in the past to compare it with. I purchased it for a couple features I wanted - a remote control and a digital thermostat. As far as noise goes, it is definitely not the quietest heater, and unfortunately does not have a high/low setting for the fan speed as some space heaters have to perhaps reduce the noise level. It's not exactly as loud as a hair dryer, but more on the level of a bathroom exhaust fan. Every time it kicks on though, the fan makes a shutteringly loud creeking noise until it gets going. For the amount of noise it makes, you would think though that it would move more air, as the fan is very weak. There is an automatic shutoff switch on the base of the unit in case the heater gets knocked over. Unfortunately, due to this ridiculous design, you'll find yourself having to reprogram the unit every time you move it at all since it actually cuts the power off to it and it doesn't save your settings! Furthermore, if you have any sort of carpet, you'll have to tape or glue the switch down! They should have used an internal ball bearing tilt switch or another type of tilt sensor. Next, the LCD display is hard to read, especially at night, unless you're close. This kills the idea of the remote! They should have inverted the LCD display, having the characters lit instead of the background, or used LEDs. The buttons are also hard to read.. they are completely black with no paint for contrast on the labels. Finally, the unit has some strange behavior. I have a thermometer that I've been monitoring its accuracy with, and all I can see is that the unit leaves a lot to be desired in this department. More specifically, it doesn't turn on right away if for example, the room is 68 and I have it set to 72. I'll have to crank it up to 75, then after it kicks in for a while, set it back to 72.

DeLonghi should have put more funding into design, evaluation, and the features more people care about rather than things like anti-freeze mode and a cheap air filter (which removing didn't make much difference in air flow or noise). If I were an executive at DeLonghi, I would immediately fire the entire design and engineering team on this one, and start from scratch!

It's not worth the hassle to return this, and if I could do it over again, I would have purchased another unit. However, when I was evaluating different space heaters, I found every unit left much to be desired. Perhaps it's the same set of morons that designed this space heater that's been designing every other one out there!

4.0 out of 5 stars Safe, Worked well, but not dependable, April 1, 2009
This review is from: DeLonghi DCH4590ER 1,500-Watt Ceramic Heater with Remote Control (Kitchen)
Loved this heater. We used it in our baby's nursery to keep the heat regulated overnight while the rest of the house was cooler. It worked great and we felt safe using it. Then after less than a year of use it just stopped working. No reason for it to have stopped. Very odd. So, that issue was disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Heater, March 23, 2009
This review is from: DeLonghi DCH4590ER 1,500-Watt Ceramic Heater with Remote Control (Kitchen)
Great heater. It met all our requirements (small, low cost, safe, remote, thermostat, tip-over protection). It's great for getting dressed on cold mornings, just turn it on and the area right in front is warm right away. It takes a little more time ~1/2 hr to warm up our whole bedroom, but that seems to be pretty good for such a small heater. It makes a little noise (of course), but nothing we can't sleep through and it actually seems quieter than another similar heater we bought for another room. And the remote is great for turning it on and off without having to get out of the warm bed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good for small bedroom, December 10, 2009
By Jamba Tech (San Francisco) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DeLonghi DCH4590ER 1,500-Watt Ceramic Heater with Remote Control (Kitchen)
The heater does provide adequate heat (one star for living up to its name), and the tip switch works (one more star for that feature working). Not suitable for quiet environment. Thermostat sucks.

My 10+ year old space heater started to rattle this winter, loud enough to wake me up at night. So I need a replacement. This DeLonghi will not work out. The thermostat control is just inadequate. The unit requires too much manual input (did I mention I'm trying to sleep at night?). In auto mode, I have to crank up the thermostat to get it to start. To maintain room temperature, the heating element cycles between low and high. I thought the little unit was having a seizure it was clicking sooo fast. Lowering the thermostat back down below the desired temp did not turn off the heat. I had to switch modes to turn off the heat, cool down, then crank up the thermostat again when I felt a chill. It will turn off by itself when the ambient room temp is above the thermostat setting, but that won't happen until spring.

Smaller nits to pic: I choose this Delonghi because it is the same size and has similar features of my old unit. I expected some wind noise, but it is louder than I am used to. The all-seeing-eye makes a nice night light but not the easiest display to read. The unit BEEPS each time you press the remote. The tone is just about right for a fire alarm, only a little softer. On the topic of fire and space heaters, the tip switch is one of my criteria for choosing this unit, and it works. The safety tips included in the packaging say to keep the heater 3ft from obstructions. Difficult to do since the cord is <2.5ft long (I will follow the adjacent safety tip to not use an extension cord).

The DeLonghi portable heater is just right for small rooms, or medium rooms that you do not want to get hot while you are sleeping. The timer and the remote control are handy so that I can turn on the heater before climbing out of bed in the AM. I set the timer so that I do not forget to turn it off, should I fall asleep. I do not experience the loudness that other writers c/o about. I also used the heater to help dry a leak after a rain in the basement. The best feature is the heater will turn off, should someone knock the heater over.
Thank you for a good product-for the price.
Alice

...that's about it. I bought this to use in my bathroom (don't), but the slightest bit of steam from the shower cuts it off, no matter how cold it is in there. Then the temperature reading gets stuck at 72 degrees (even when it's not) and it won't do anything until you've unplugged it for a few minutes. Plus, the extremely loud fan volume is the same no matter what setting you have it at--hardly good for ambiance when you have friends over and you want them to enjoy a toasty bathroom. The timer might come in handy to heat up the bathroom before I have to go in there in the mornings...now if I can only remember to set it. Sadly, I had way too much confidence in this unit and didn't think to return it until it was too late...

5.0 out of 5 stars Small but powerful for my living room, January 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DeLonghi DCH4590ER 1,500-Watt Ceramic Heater with Remote Control (Kitchen)
I bought this heater Jan 2009 and I am using it again this winter. I bought this one to place in the living room. I keep it placed in front of the fireplace which is sealed off and no longer in use. I was skeptical that such a small unit could produce such warm heat but it does.

The thermostat for my house is in the living room where the unit is placed. If I run this unit for a few hours my thermostat does not kick on and off which is nice. I know I am using energy elsewhere but being able to have direct heat and constant is a nice feature. I like the fact that you can oscillate the fan on this unit. That comes in handy when I am trying to heat the area of the living room itself. I was a bit fearful of using this heater since I have pets close to the ground but this unit will shut off if you even touch it. I feared them knocking it over. Even if I move it slightly it has the auto shut off. The remote comes in handy too when I am sitting on the sofa and feel too lazy and comfortable. I can just change the temperature settings or turn the unit off with the remote. I really like the fact that it does not take up much room as I do not have a lot of room to spare. I have kept it out year round but only use it in the winter. It is so small that I do not need to store it. Small, but yet very powerful. My only complaint would be the fan can be a bit noisy. I have it placed in the vicinity of the TV so when trying to watch TV I have to turn the volume up (on TV) or the sound is drowned out. I choose to place it in the living room so I guess that is my own doing. Using this for the second winter now I have no complaints. It functions great and I hope to get a few more winters out of it.
