The best music software I've seen so far
Late last year, I bought Finale SongWriter 2007, thinking that the fifty-dollar software would be enough for me to compose music for my cartoons. However, after nearly a year of not being satisfied by its limitations, I finally paid an extra $50 for an upgrade to Finale PrintMusic 2009, and I do not regret it. MIDI interface not what I expected
I bought this because Finale advertised PrintMusic for "any" midi instrument. The idea is that by using the "Hyperscribe" functionality one simply plays with a click track and the music is transcribed through the MIDI interface. This may work great with a keyboard but the results are unusable with my wind controller. I guess there must be latency issues. So now I'm...

The best music software I've seen so far, November 15, 2008
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
Late last year, I bought Finale SongWriter 2007, thinking that the fifty-dollar software would be enough for me to compose music for my cartoons. However, after nearly a year of not being satisfied by its limitations, I finally paid an extra $50 for an upgrade to Finale PrintMusic 2009, and I do not regret it. For one thing, SongWriter is limited to how many staves of music you can put in it, and PrintMusic doesn't seem to have that limitation. It can also do grace notes, and other things that SongWriter couldn't. I originally sought out to buy PrintMusic anyway, but I thought it would be a bargain to buy the other program instead. Better late than never, I guess.

PrintMusic is spectacular!, December 22, 2008
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
As an amateur musician/hobbyist I am completely blown away by this music software! I am amazed at it's capabilities and am humbled by those who can use most/all of them. Kudo's to the programming team at Finale. I'm not going to go into any detail here because I could never explain the creative experience that it affords the user in 25 words or less. The only thing that I can say is that if you have any music rolling around in your head, PrintMusic will definitely help you get it on paper. Awesome product!

PrintMusic '09, November 19, 2008
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
I had been using my version of PrintMusic since 2001! A new computer with Vista required an update, and it's gotten much more sophisticated and easier to use. I really haven't had any problems with Vista (yet, anyway). This is a great value if you don't need the more powerful Finale products. I am a private music teacher and find all I need with PrintMusic.

Easy and Fun to Use, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
PrintMusic's features are easy to use. The software is very intuitive, so if you know how to read music, it's a cinch to create your own. The first tutorial was very clear and fun. I haven't completed any more tutorials because (1) I have been able to figure out how to do anything I want to do without them and (2) I'm having too much fun to buckle down and study.
I basically bought PrintMusic so I could transpose piano music for my alto saxaphone and be able to read the result (unlike the smudged pencil versions I've used before). I had no idea how powerful PrintMusic would be. The scanning function works fairly well, even on my 10-year old scanner. The MIDI function is easy to set up. So far, I've only output songs to my MIDI keyboard, but that works wonderfully. Once you've set it up, directing the playback to the computer speakers or the MIDI device is as easy as selecting a printer in a word processing program.
PrintMusic's functions are intuitive and the electronic user manual available through the Help menu has answered every question I have had so far. The fact that the sound is played as you enter each note means that the feedback is instantaneous. The playback function works like an ordinary device, with icons for pause, play, stop, etc. And you can choose the measure where you want to start the playback, so you can listen to just a portion, not the whole piece.
This software is well worth the money for me. I've actually begun to experiment with writing my own music because it's so easy and fun to use.

MIDI interface not what I expected, May 3, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
I bought this because Finale advertised PrintMusic for "any" midi instrument. The idea is that by using the "Hyperscribe" functionality one simply plays with a click track and the music is transcribed through the MIDI interface. This may work great with a keyboard but the results are unusable with my wind controller. I guess there must be latency issues. So now I'm relegated to use the very slow "Simple Entry" functionality. I will say that the quality of my leadsheets are great but entry is extremely cumbersome, painfully slow, and click-centric. Over all I'm very disappoint in this software because of the MIDI interface. The reason I bought this tool was it claimed to interface with "any" MIDI instrument. I have other notation software that is much faster to use than this and at a lot less cost.

Nice, but, March 13, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
Scanning function is a little weird. No apparent rhyme or reason it adds or misses notes, rest, etc. The midi tone on playing the sheet music sounds like a bad rendition of a child's toy. Bottomline is that is better than nothing, but fell short of the write ups and product description.

Just one problem..., April 26, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
Havr been using the program for a few weeks now. Note entry is easy, most commands are intuitive, pretty good so far. But one problem: playback on my computer is sometimes erratic or stops entirely. I don't know if it's my sound card or what, but sometimes the notes stop playing or come out garbled. If I close the program and restart it, it works fine again, but the problem usually happens again.

PrintMusic up to billing, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
I recently purchased Print Music, and I'd rate it four stars. It pretty much lives up to billing as fairly easy to use notation software. Pros: it's fairly easy to tap in notes and chords. Cons: I still haven't been able to hook up my Yamaha P-90 digital piano to my PC, and that's a big con, since the whole point of such programs is to be able to plug in a melody line. However, I'm not sure if the problem is my sound card, or the chipset on my PC -- certain music programs work better on Intel chips than AMDs, although I was able to get my old Kurzweil PC-88 to work with it. So the jury's still out but assuming you don't have this problem, I'd recommend the product.

Great value, July 21, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
Product works flawlessly. After I downloaded the update files for the scanner I was amazed at how well it imports scanned music. I was was importing single staff music for a woodwind and I have a pretty good scanner (Epson perfection 3200 photo). Scans imported well both directly and when I saved scans in photoshop as TIFF files. Data entry is fast also. I have used a midi keyboard and was pleased whith the speed of entry. The help section is very complete but be sure to read the entire section on each topic. Some info is a bit buried. "Cut time" is not found in a search but is explained in "time signature" entry. All in all I am very pleased. I used the free download available on the net and was glad to give them my money.

MicNotator and Hyperscribe are pretty awful, January 25, 2009
This review is from: Finale PrintMusic 2009 (CD-ROM)
I bought this program thinking I'd be able to bypass the tedious process of computer notation by simply playing parts on my midi keyboard or through my microphone. I was painfully wrong. First off, the mic notator feature is a joke. I was lucky if printmusic picked up one measure of my playing correct out of 20. The hyperscribe feature (in which you play parts through a midi keyboard) is better, but still often incapable of picking up correct rhythms. Overall I was disappointed, seeing as I probably could've just got a cheaper notation program without these features since they are pretty useless in printmusic. I Would not recommend this to anyone who is mainly interested in the Hyperscribe and MicNotator features.
