It works like it should and it won't hurt your wallet.
I received this generator via UPS today (I feel sorry for the UPS driver, it's heavy.)
I opened it and it was double-boxed (good start) and after opening box #2, out came my new generator. Keep in mind that this unit is a 2800 Watt generator with a 4000 watt max output - plenty to power most small homes' fridge, a few lights and a TV, but not your dryer or...

Warranty is useless
We purchased the BlueMax generator and three months later it stopped working correctly. BlueMax doesn't answer their phone or return calls or emails. After dozens of calls and emails to different companies that sell the BlueMax one company has tried to help us albeit at our own expense. Their warranty is useless.

It works like it should and it won't hurt your wallet., November 24, 2008
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
I received this generator via UPS today (I feel sorry for the UPS driver, it's heavy.)
I opened it and it was double-boxed (good start) and after opening box #2, out came my new generator. Keep in mind that this unit is a 2800 Watt generator with a 4000 watt max output - plenty to power most small homes' fridge, a few lights and a TV, but not your dryer or electric stove.
I filled the oil on the engine (lots of warning stickers about this) and put a gallon of gas in the tank. I turned on the gas petcock, flipped on the choke and pulled the starter - 3 pulls and it started and ran for smoothly for about an hour (until I shut it off.) I plugged several things into it while it was running (the voltage meter on it read a constant 110V) and everything seemed to run fine without the generator even showing a load - even my 2HP table saw motor didn't pull too much when starting.
This looks like typical Chinese-built hardware but it also appears to be well-made (especially for the money.) There's a pop-out filter in the fuel tank (a nice extra) and an accessory pack that includes two 110v plugs, a 220v 3-prong plug and a spark plug wrench. My manual and accessory pack were stuffed up under the gas tank and could have been easily overlooked.
The unit is fairly quiet (for a generator) and is tolerable for outside use. I borrowed a friend's US-made generator and it was much louder than this one is. With my home's door shut and it running just outside, you can't hear it running.
Unless you're equipped with a very strong back, I don't recommend you pick this up by yourself. You would do well to either have a good dolly or a wheel setup to move this around. I am going to use a dolly as I don't want it to be too easy to steal when I use it outside my home.
One last thought: typically you get what you pay for. This is a low-cost generator. I don't expect from it what I might expect from a US-made unit that costs twice as much. But I will say that with good maintenance, I expect it to last for several years. I gave it four stars instead of five since, while it's a good value, it's not built with the fit and finish of it's American competition.

Hurricane Gustav, December 15, 2008
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
The Wednesday before Hurricane Gustav hit Baton Rouge I purchased the Blue Max GEN4000 (older version). I joined Amazon Prime and for $283 and change (the generator was on sale for $279) it was delivered to my home the next day. Gustav knocked out 99% of the electric in Baton Rouge. I powered a 5000btu window AC, a couple fans, a side by side refrigerator, three or four low wattage lights and a 19 inch portable TV with this unit 24hrs a day, for 8 days-5 hours. I changed the oil every 72 hours. Not a single problem and started on the first pull most of the time. It was quietier than other generators in my neighborhood and best of all burned just 5-1/2 gal of gas per day.

Best Value with good performance, January 1, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
I have had this gas generator for a year and if you're considering a reliable home genset, give this unit some serious consideration. Prior to purchase, my research determined that the engine is manufactured in China under license from Honda. Item arrived with packing damage but the support cage around the product rendered enough protection. Once I added oil, it started after three pulls and has been doing so, reliably, for these past 12 months.
Strongly advise the purchase of the wheel kit which will definitely simplify transporting to various parts of your home.
My neighbor has a Honda 5500 watts and paid over $1,800. This unit has a great price with admirable performance.

So Far so good..., February 5, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
I read all the reviews before I bought this and most were good. It turned out to be a timely purchase as an ice storm hit two weeks after my purchase and my son did not have power for 5 days. I gave the Blue Max to him still in the box. Turns out there were NO Instructions but being mechanically inclined this was not a problem-only how much oil to use. The machine performed well not as loud as some but not as quiet as some much higher priced Honda's. The generator stopped once for low oil but once he refilled the oil it did fine for the rest of the use. My son did say he thought it might be leaking a few drops of oil from somewhere. This concerns me but the fact that it ran fine for five straight days makes me think the oil may be a small issue. I would say this is almost a consumable generator as the cost of doing much repair would outweigh its value.

I got a lemon and have to eat it!, October 26, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
I needed a generator as a back-up power supply in case of power outages at my home. I purchased a Blue Max 4000 several months ago, took it out of the box, and got it running. I was pleased with its quiet operation and it seemed to be working fine. I shut it off and put it away until I needed it a few months later. Again, it started well and worked fine--at first. But after about 15-20 minutes, it quit producing power. This is how it always works: it runs great for a few minutes and produces power perfectly, then suddenly the voltmeter goes to zero and there's no power. Since by the time I discoverd this it was too late to return it to Amazon, and I knew shipping it back would be costly anyway, I tried to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it. I figured it was a simple loose wire somewhere or something, but eventually I was told by an electric motor shop that for it to act like it does it must have a short in the generator windings, and the generator itself will need to be replaced. I'm doubtful I can find that part without paying almost the cost of a whole new unit. So I guess I'm left with a totally worthless generator. I would discourage anyone from buying this generator, since you might have the same bad experience I have had.

Mostly happy, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
I live in a semi rural area in Michigan. It seems every time we have a storm the power goes out, thus this purchase.
Product was delivered on time in perfect condition. I filled the engine with oil (not provided) and gas, gave it 2 pulls and it was up and running. Sure enoungh, one week later we lost power. Generator worked perfect--ran 2 refrigerators, furnace and some lights with no trouble for 8 hours. Remember, this is 4000 watt MAX unit, normal output is 2800 watts. Also, it is heavy (about 90 pounds)
The reason I gave only 4 stars is because it was made in China.

Cheap crap, June 1, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
Bought this item through amazon from Homier distributing. It didn't work when I got it. It started up just fine, just didn't put out any power, which is kinda why I bought it! I called Homier and after you wait on the phone for about 30 min, you may get to talk to someone, or it just may hang up on you. Well finally I get someone and they want to send me parts, cause they know what the problem is. I agreed to wait on the new parts, but they didn't fix the problem. It took another 2 days of trying to get someone on the phone at Homier and now they will have someone call me back. It never happened. Don't buy this generator, and don't buy anything from Homier.

Avoid this generator-if you know what is good for you, May 7, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
I am very pleased with the mechanical aspects of this generator. Usually one pull is all it takes and the generator is off running. I have had minor problems with the generator such as the pull cord breaking and lately the muffler going bad. When you consider the use it is minor indeed. My problem is with BLUE MAX and their lack of customer service or rather no customer service at all. The email message they give on the website does not work and their telephone message box is always full. So forget about leaving a message and waiting on them to return the call. it is not going to happen. If you need replacement parts or need to speak to Blue Max about an item you are in trouble. Although, this is a good generator it pays to purchase locally or use a retailer that can service your generator. Local distributors will not touch this generator because it is not distributed by them. You get what you pay for. Take it from the nose that knows. Buyer beware.

nice generator, January 18, 2009
This review is from: Blue Max GEN4000B 4,000 Watt 6.5 HP 4-Stroke OHV Gas Powered Generator (Lawn & Patio)
this is a nice generator. when i got it i was surprised it started with only a couple of pulls. it has always started for me with only a couple pulls. very easy starting machine. runs wonderfully well. very smooth operating machine. it runs everything i need it too run. have used it more than a few times. i am very happy with this generator. the best part was the price. i couldnt belive how cheap it was. i paid $211.00 for it. around where I live you cant touch a 4000 watt generator for that. They are much more expensive than that. This is a new generator not a used one I bought. One bit of advice I would offer is make sure you get the wheel kit for it. It is heavier than you might think. I ended up having to get the wheel kit after I got the generator. The seller of this item was also very good to do business with. Homier Distributing. They were very helpful when I contacted them for a parts list. the manuel doesnt have one so I requested one in case I ever want to get any parts for it. I kind of dout that ill need to though. It seems to be a well made machine. In review I would say to anyone thinking about getting a generator this is an excellent choice. Cant beat the price either. Try buying one in a store for the same price and see. Be prepared to spend a lot more.
