Don't buy this product
Don't buy this product. If you must buy it buy it from Magicjack so you get the 30 day guarantee. I bought it here on Amazon and once installed the audio would cut in and out. I worked with Magicjack to re-install their software but the problem continued to reoccur. The Amazon seller would not let me return and would not refund my purchase. I contacted Magicjack and...

I believe the previous reviewer may have received a defective unit or something. My magicjack is great --- quality as good as landline and so close to free. This phone comes with all the services you could want -- those that the phone company charges $6-$8 monthly for each one. What I love about the voicemail is that every voicemail generates an email and you can listen to your messages on any computer (or of course you can access it from your phone). You can go online and forward your MJ number to another number in the event of a power outage too. I just love this and with my family all over the country it's really great to talk long distance all I want to, with landline quality, free. You can't go wrong here.

this item is really good. Im currently deployed in Iraq and the magic jack works great at the "internet cafe" we got over here. My phone calls are free to the States and Puerto Rico. I can even receive calls when is plugged in and the internet running of course. And when not, you will receive an email with a voice message attach. Is really nice. It save me a lot of money (phone cards).

Don't buy this product. If you must buy it buy it from Magicjack so you get the 30 day guarantee. I bought it here on Amazon and once installed the audio would cut in and out. I worked with Magicjack to re-install their software but the problem continued to reoccur. The Amazon seller would not let me return and would not refund my purchase. I contacted Magicjack and they said they only issue refunds to those who buy direct from them. On another note, the software slows down your computer. I currently have cable phone service through Comcast and it works fine so I know it wasn't my internet connection. Buyer beware!

Bottom Line: Works as Advertised, January 30, 2009

This is not a perfect device, but the bottom line is that it works as advertised and has replaced the need for a landline phone or more expensive VOIP service.
I've had the magic jack for about 2 months now, and the biggest problem is that once every minute or two, I experience a 1 second dead spot where I cannot hear the person on the other end. Other than that, no issues with outgoing or incoming calls. One feature I really like is that voice messages are emailed to you so you can check them when you're not home.
Installation was easy after I found a usb port with enough juice to power it up, and I have used customer support chat twice with very good results each time.
In summary, I think this product offers huge bang for buck and is perfect for personal/family use as a replacement for a much more expensive home phoneline option. I would not use it or recommend it as a sole means of phone service for a professional capacity, but it's easily good enough for private use and definitely worth every penny.

At the begining I was exceptical about this product, but I took a chance and bought it through amazon and I am really happy with it. I plugged it, the software setup came up, filled the form, chose my number and that was it, within seconds I was already dialing and receiving calls.
Voice quality is really good. just like a standard phone line.
Just make sure you plug the usb directly to the USB port, do not use USB hubs.

Item still need improvement, September 1, 2008
Yes, free phone service sounds good and is a huge savings - but ... the Magic Jack only works 50% of the time.
Often we can't receive calls in, or make calls out. We have to reboot the computer a couple of times per day.
Luckily, we don't use the phone much and we have cell phones, so this is not a huge deal, but still a concern.
The Magic Jack still needs improvement.

BEWARE - DON'T ORDER !!!!!, December 11, 2008

You'll have no trouble ordering, but their "customer service" is HORRIBLE. They deliberately drag things out, claim one thing and then the opposite, pass you to different representatives who then contradict what the other one told you, and they sometimes suddenly have trouble with English or typing, yet have no trouble at other times. They are very polite, yet totally ineffectual and unethical.
After reading Amazon reviews, I decided to cancel my order less than 1 hour after placing it. The first day, I wasted 3+ hours during 3 different "live chat sessions" with MagicJack's customer service representatives, getting nowhere. They could process the order enough to gain pre-authorization from my credit card company (I checked), but couldn't access the records to cancel my order and after wasting as much time as they could, would finally tell me to try again later. The next day, I tried again and STILL don't know whether or not they cancelled my order. Here is the exact transcript of that half-hour interaction:

I had some early problems using this product due to the MJ registration server being down
their "live chat support" people read from the same script no matter what the problem. they submit the many problems they cannot resolve to their programming crew, and some of those problems do get resolved in later updates. 1 of 2 I bought gave me good service for awhile, but comes up as " unrecognized USB device on more than one of my computers. the 2nd of 2 i bought has never worked, since the MJ software continues to tell me it isn't plugged in. I'm still waiting for this problem to be resolved, since I'm well past the 30 day refund period [i bought 2 of them Summer 2008] Even when otherwise functional if you run other software that slows computer down the MJ quits working. I would not recommend this for primary phone service. when working it is OK for making outgoing calls. might be OK for low cost "teen line"

I've used Magic Jack for one and a half years and my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner. With my home internet cable connection, the sound quality is flawless and it's very reliable. Magic Jack has now become my home phone and the money saved is now paying for my internet connection. I plan on using this for international calling for an upcoming mission trip to Kenya, for calls back to the US. I was skeptical; but, this looks like the evolution of phone service (for pennies on the dollar).

Overall pleased with the magicjack. Tech service has been reliable so far; occasionally experience some loss of voice quality when using the magicjack making it difficult to understand the person's voice.
