So Far I like It!
I've had the XTR-540 for about a week now, and so far, so good. Nice display, nice suction cup mount. Minimum number of false alarms. Fairly intuitive setup and menu system. Seems to be holding a charge fairly long. Nice compact size for a cordless unit.
Not impressed
I bought this for my girlfriend's car that I drive from time to time. It alerts the user to threats through the audible alert system, but it is hard to remember the different sounds, which is why it is great to be able to visually see what the threat is. The problem with this device is that in the day time, you can not see the screen AT ALL! No matter if you change the...

The XTR-540 works great. Finds the radar long before I can spot the police. It is a great tool to keep your speed in check. Being cordless,I can swap to my motorcycle with ease.
Battery lasts about 4-5 days of 50 mile roundtrip commuting.

This new whistler is great!!! The fact that it is cordless makes it universal from car to motorcycle. It's charger works very well when plugged in to a power point for a short time. The XTR-540 lasts a whole week on one charge on my work commute, (approx 12 hours). Since my commute is 45 minutes to and from work, the battery saver set to 1 hour works well for me.
On the other side, this unit will detect radar alot further than the eye can see, if it alarms, you better believe it.
Buy it!!! for the money, it's the best on the market. It's better than my last $400.00 Escort that was stolen.

Overall I am very pleased with this radar detector. The one inconvenience is with the digital compass. When you mount the detector in a different vehicle or even in a different place on your car's windshield you have to recalibrate the compass. It's very easy to do, but a little annoying....you have to drive in two complete circles.

Bought this radar detector in February 2010. Have used it no more than 10x. While recently using it on a 600 mile trip, the sound did not work and I ultimately got a speeding ticket. Also, setting the compass is a pain AND it's never accurate after calibration.
I bought this radar detector for its features and design but that obviously doesn't translate into quality. I bought a Cobra for my return trip home.

I've purchased this radar detector right before a long, interstate road trip (WA, OR, CA). It was easy to set up (the manual is short, sweet and straightforward). The fact that it can either be plugged in or run on batteries is also very appealing. The only feature that I do not use is the compass, but that's only because I haven't found a spot to calibrate in yet.
All in all, this little gadget saved me from at least 5 speeding traps in one weekend! I don't really use it in the city, but for highways, I definitely recommend it.

The problem with this device is that in the day time, you can not see the screen AT ALL! No matter if you change the brightness of the screen or change the viewing angle, it is impossible to see what threats are in the area. At night, you can see it ok, but it is still not up to the quality I believe it should have. Final review....spend your money on a different radar detector (I wish I would have returned it, but was too busy to deal with the problem).

Purchased this about 2 mos ago. Did very well, somewhat weak in picking up radar, laser
because usually, the cops are close bye when it beeps. The range obviously an issue. Also,
the last few weeks, the battery life has gone down significantly. I dont travel far everyday
but it seems that I have to charge this every other day or about 5 hours of use. Great looks
though.....

My first long trip using the Whistler certainly saved me 2 tickets. The radar detector alerted me that the officer had locked-on to my car and I was able to reduce speed quickly and shortly after, on my return journey the Whistler alerted me that there was a cruiser hiding behind a wall with radar locked on to me. I am by no means a speed freak but I have a habit of driving slightly above the limit and recommend this product to save points on the license.
