3.0 out of 5 stars Small and not very powerful
I was surprised at how small this was. And it really isn't that powerful. And, yes, I do have the power turned all the way up. It's good for blowing grass and small leaves, but I don't think it's suitable for heavy duty or even moderate use. Not for piles of grass or leaves.

5.0 out of 5 stars As handy as a shirt pocket, December 22, 2009
By Skip L. (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Makita BUB182Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower - Bare-tool (Lawn & Patio)
This blower is an excellent addition to Makita's LXT lineup of tools. Like all of the LXT tools, the blower is quite powerful, very rugged, lightweight and well thought out. Its small size and very light weight make it all the more useful and portable. It performs the shop duties of an air blow gun without the need of a compressor and hoses. The variable speed function is invaluable from heavy volume in cleaning out the buildup of dust and chips in tablesaws and planers, to the light "dusting off" needed on shelving and drawers (without blowing away the contents). It is equally as impressive on a job site as in the shop. The ability to clean off all the dust on your clothing from working around heavy sawdust, drywall dust etc. - this alone makes the blower a must have.

It would be hard to justify the purchase of this if it were to be the only LXT tool one were buying, given the fact that a charger and battery together will run $100+. But for someone with other LXT tools, already having a charger and batteries, this is definitely a worthwhile investment. The nozzle of the blower (the long black tube) is made of heavy rubber and detaches with a simple twist. This flexible nozzle can readily be flexed (bent) to point the blower into hard to reach areas. The simple "twist to remove" breaks the blower down to ultimate portability. It would almost fit in a toolbox! LXT batteries give it plenty of power and runtime; much more than one would anticipate from a battery powered device.

As far as the vacuum functionality, the nozzle is simply removed from the blower port and twisted onto the air intake port. Then a collection bag (not supplied with blower) is attached to the output to collect the vacuumed debris. However, I found this configuration to be too awkward to be really useful. I did purchase a bag, approx. $16, from a tool supply house, but am not impressed with transforming this into a vacuum. It would do in a pinch, but certainly not something I could make a habit of. The cloth bag is identical to one found on a Makita belt sander, plate joiner or similar device. If you want one, do an internet search for Makita #122321-1; that is the part number of the dust collection bag. Better yet, Makita has just introduced a new 18v LXT vacuum, quite similar to a dustbuster; the Makita BCL180ZW. I don't have one yet, but am ordering one. It should prove to be another "must have" addition to the LXT tool bag.

For heavy yard usage and constant leaf blowing, a larger electric or gas blower would be more appropriate. But for the other 90% of the time where a portable blower would fit the bill, this Makita is as handy as a shirt pocket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well for light duty clean up, May 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Makita BUB182Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower - Bare-tool (Lawn & Patio)
For me it works well to clear up leaves around the pool. It is much smaller than the usual electric or gas power blower. The air flow is much more narrow but still powerful. It small and light enough that my six year old daughter can handle without difficulty. Added bonus, it works wonderfully in starting a charcoal fire. It take less than 1/4 time to do so.For major clean up I still prefer my old Homelite gas power blower.

--2 month update ---

We still use the Makita LXT Blower on a (almost) daily basis. My wife loves to use it to blow off the steps in our garage. It is the useful rechargeable tool we have ever purchased.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was somewhat skeptical when I ordered the Makita LXT Blower. I was worried that my 1.5aH battery would not fit or even if it did it wouldn't power the blower. I was also worried that even at full power that something this small wouldn't be up to the job - mainly blowing out my garage and cleaning the grass of my sidewalk.

The Answers -

- While the 1.5aH battery is not optimal (although I do have two from my Makita LCT300W 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-Piece Combo Kit set), but it does work well enough. The main issue is that the battery life is about 3-5 minutes on the blower's highest setting. However, 4 minutes will blow a lot of grass off of your sidewalks).

- Plenty of power - IF you are blowing on smooth surfaces. If you are planning to use this to blow your leaves into a giant pile you will be disappointed.

- Ultra light - less than 5lbs

- Pull-the-trigger easy - this is what really attracted me to the Makita LXT Blower since about 75% of my clean-up jobs are simple and do not require my gas powered blower. It is great to have the option to grab a light-weight blower and have the job done within a couple of minutes.

- The Makita blower can be converted into a vacuum - but the attachment is NOT included. I was puzzled for a few minutes as I looked for the dust collecting attachment. This is my only complaint, why didn't Makita just include the dust collector?

Final Verdict - I really couldn't be happier. I may eventually buy a Makita BL1830 18v (3.0ah) Lithium-Ion Battery but until then I will be perfectly happy with my current set-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite tool--ever!, November 19, 2009
This review is from: Makita BUB182Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower - Bare-tool (Lawn & Patio)
I had no idea this blower would be as compact as it is. I love the size and weight. The convenience far outweighs the need to recharge the lithium-ion battery--which is simple and fast. I clean my patios, walkways, driveway, and yes, I have trees everyplace, including an arbor. This little Makita far surpasses my expectations. I've also been using it to remove dust from my cars; and, it's great at a lower speed inside the house (try it on books.) Because of the ease of this tool, I use it all the time and on things I would not have considered in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read first before giving it a bad review EDIOT!!!!, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Makita BUB182Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower - Bare-tool (Lawn & Patio)
If you can read you would know this blower does not come with a battery. That's why Makita tools are so great. If you have other tools from Makita like their combo pack, you don't need other batteries. I already have 4 batteries, and I don't need more. I can save money because I don't need a case, or another battery to bring up the price on the blower. I also bought the Makita FlashlightMakita BML185N 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Flashlight, and I was able to save money because it came without a battery. Do you see now why it's nice to buy a tool without a battery. I've seen so many people give a bad review to a product, because they didn't understand or read the description.

As for the blower it works great. It small, but surprisingly powerful. I use it to blow all the saw dust off of my tools. I was surprised to see that it's strong enough to blow leaves off the side walk too. The plus side too is that it's quite compared to the gas powered blowers you see people use on their lawns. If you have a small property I would recommend this over the gas power ones. Your neighbors will thank you for not waking them up when you use this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Compact Blower...Great for Drying Cars, April 29, 2010
By GatorJ (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Makita BUB182Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Blower - Bare-tool (Lawn & Patio)
This is actually my second compact Makita cordless blower. I had the 14 volt pod style battery model. I also had the cordless drill and work light in the same series. I liked that blower so much, I replaced everything when the new 18 volt LXI lithium-ion series model came out just based on the new blower. Obviously the 14 volt was a good unit, this 18 volt LXI model is like that one on steroids. Don't let the compact size fool you, in fact the BUB182Z almost looks like a toy, this blower puts out a lot of air at excellent velocity. Now, it is not going to work well with heavy wet leaves or stones, but for dirt, dust, dead buds, dry leaves and things along those lines it is perfect. This is all you need to blow out your garage floor or clean off a porch. It is SO convenient not to have to mess with extension cords or gasoline/oil mixes. My favorite use for it, however, is to dry of my cars after washing them. I'm a bit of a fanatic about my cars and how I take care of them. Because of that I'm always concerned about swirls and scratches. This blower can easily dry two cars off one battery charge. Not only can it remove water from the large sheet metal areas, but it is perfect to get at the water you usually can't get at with a microfiber waffle weave drying towel...exterior rear view mirrors, around headlights, door handles, window moldings, gas doors, emblems and similar areas. Before these tools, after I hand dried a car, I'd move it back into the garage or open and shut a door and I would get little streaks of water running down from the places I just mentioned and I'd have to grab a towel and redry those parts of the car again to avoid water spotting. If use this blower, 95% of that is eliminated. You can also easily remove the water from the wheels and tires, so you have much less water running off onto the garage floor.

I really love this tool and recommend it without hesitation. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. It is also a great value. Once you get the charger and batteries (a bit pricey), picking to this tool or the other LXI series tools is really quite reasonable.

After reading the other reviews, I wasn't sure this short nuzzled product would have the power to clean my patios and walkways. I found it more than adequate, however one could not expect it to move wet, sticky leaves that are common to other areas. The variable speed feature is quite useful and I have been able to use it to clean the chaff from my beans without blowing the beans away as well as dust my shop without disturbing things on the tables and shelves. The lithium-ion is definitely the way to go. It gives several minutes of time and recharges in 20 minutes. I'm very pleased with it as I have been with all my other Makita tools.

If you want a quick cleanup this is for you. I have a compressor in my shop, and a separate shop vac system. But both involve me walking around and connecting nozzles, etc. More than it's worth for a quick cleanup. With this tool all I have to do is blow. "You do know how to cleanup, don't you Steve? You just put the battery and tool together and blow." (With apologies to Lauren Bacall).

But seriously, it takes 2 seconds to clear the workbench and chop saw or drill. The blower has two settings and the higher one is surprisingly powerful. I tested it on blowing sawdust and leaves out of my garage and it worked great... took a little longer than using a real leaf blower but you can't beat the portability and ease of use. You can take the nozzle off to store in smaller places but this detracts from the main advantage of this tool -- immediate results. So I hang it on the wall to keep it an arm's length away.

As an added bonus I used the lower setting to do a quick "dusting" of my bookcases. Something I should do more often. I do this first and then vac the floor (which I was going to do anyway). Does a pretty good job in just a few seconds.

This was a good addition to my tool set. And, of course, it allows me to amortize the cost of those batteries, which is not insubstantial. And there's something about having all the tools the same brand/color and sharing batteries that just seems efficient and makes me happy.

I just love this mini blower. I blown out my carport
before the gardener come over. Also I blew out all the
dust under my refrigerator. Nice. It's a small blower and
great for tight areas. I don't have a garden. But if I
did it would be great for vegetable garden or delicate
plants and flowers. It has adjustable speed. I just love
it! Not good for large projects. Great for clean up such as
garages etc etc etc!
