dual screens for 2 kids... no need for them to crane their necks to a central spot with viewing angle issues.
they are lightweight, cheap feeling plastic units. the displays are acceptable and kids will not notice their relatively poor quality - my portable panasonic dvd player's display is much better! sound is sort of tinny. due to the streamlined design, some of the controls are hard to use and i can foresee kids having a little trouble with them. once setup though, only things to adjust are probably the direction/play buttons on the face of the main unit, volume controls and on/off switches.
they use a belt clip that just loops around the headrest and are lengthy enough to get around my honda pilot's headrests. simple and effective.
it comes with a regular plug-in power that can be used for the main unit but, not the 2nd unit. the car plug-in power cable, which is very long, splits to power both units. a single 1/8" plug A/V cable connects the two units. it also came with a 1/8" inch plug to a split yellow (video), and red/white (stereo sound) cable adapter. you could use it to connect your main unit to another tv if you want. both units have headphone jacks which i did not test yet. only the main unit has a flip out stand (as shown in the picture) so that you can watch it on a table.
so basically, this is "cheap and cheerful." i give it four stars because for the price, it is a very nice unit. easy to setup and install, and it works fine.
i hope it lasts...

Great for keeping the kids occupied on a long trip. If you have a tall spouse, just make sure that the monitors are out of kicking range for the younger kids.
Pros:
1. Great picture.
2. Good price for a dual headed unit.
3. Obviously - entertains the kids!
4. Audio out, if your car has an aux in, you can plug this in and get the sounds from the car speakers (if you really want to hear the kids movies).
Cons:
1. No storage bag to prevent the displays/units from getting scratched.
2. Controls are on the "main" unit and if you don't have an older child capable of running the system, you'll have to remove to change movies and start the next one.
<EDIT>
After the second use these units stopped functioning. Just stopped spinning up the disc and says Phillips Loading. Naturally this was discovered as we're 30 minutes into a 4.5 hour road trip. 10-15 days for a replacement doesn't fix it. Rest of the trip I heard, "Daddy fix it."
<EDIT-2 9/21/09>
After waithing three weeks, I called in to check on the status, and they never generated the request to send the replacement! Now they are telling me 3-4 weeks on top of the many weeks I already haven't had it. If I could change the rating to 1 star, that still wouldn't be high enough.
<EDIT-3 10/8/09>
Adding insult to injury... the replacement was received, much quicker than stated. Kudos. However, they sent an older model, which has even worse reviews than this current model. AND... since it is a refurb, it only has a 90 day warranty. This isn't a product you use frequently, and I probably won't know that it has failed till we sit in the car for the next long trip.
<EDIT-4 10/14/09>
I contacted Philips about the older model being received, and received a friendly CSR, Dwayne. He totally agreed with me, and did everything in his power to get the issue resolved, and escalated up the tiers. I received a call back and they said that this is their policy to replace with a similar model. I informed the supervisor that this is a cheaper model, my unit failed after one use and this was completely unacceptable. It would be no different than buying the more expensive model and being happy with being sent a used cheaper model, she agreed, but could do nothing. I asked again to be escalated. No call back at this point.
Again Amazon's customer service has stepped up to the plate. I contacted Amazon, and they OVERNIGHTED me the same model I originally purchased and included a free return shipping label. I had a product/warranty issue in the past with an elliptical, and they sent a shipping company to pick up the unit in pieces!
I'd still not purchase this model if I were you!

We installed the player unit for our (currently) only child, 2 years old, and it immediately made car rides more enjoyable. Setting it up and installing it was easy and quick. Image quality was excelent, audio not superb, but perfectly acceptable (Star Wars won't be that great, but Sesame Street is fine).
My only complaint so far, and it hasn't been a problem yet, is the relatively short (6') cable that connects the player unit to the secondary display. If you're hoping to hide the cabling along the side of the seat, or even inside the seat, that probably won't be enough. The other problem is that there's no internal power, and no way to power it other than home or a vehicle (meaning, it isn't useful on an airplane, unless you manage to get a seat with a power jack). I was traveling from AZ to OK with my 3 boys. I was excited when I read the good reviews on the product. I received the product, installed it in the car and all was good. That is until we started the trip. After two kids videos, about 30 minutes each, the dvd player stopped working. I called Philips technical support to see if they could give me any troubleshooting tips. The guy I spoke to said there wasn't anything they could do. He kept saying "Well, you know it's a portable dvd player." And "You never know what you are going to get when you order online." He said it as though I should know it would be a piece of crap. They did say they would send a replacement and that they would send it to the address in OK. However, it would take 7-10 days. Which would not work because we would be heading home by then. I asked if they could choose a faster shipping and he said no. I asked to speak to a manager. He put me on hold, then came back and said he spoke to a manager and they said no. I again reiterated that I had asked to speak to the manager. He put her on and she was unwilling to do anything for us and then added that we would have to fax the proof of purchase first. ( I understand that but who travels with that?) We will not purchase from Philips again.
Long story short, I called Amazon and they were very accommodating. We should be receiving the replacement today, plenty of time before our trip home. SO, we'll see how it goes. I hope the next one doesn't break too! I WILL not be a happy camper. I will let you know . . .

As promised, I am back to let you know how the replacement dvd player worked. Amazon did a great job getting the replacement to us in time for our trip home. The dvd player worked a bit better - at least it lasted the two day trip home. HOWEVER, there are quite a few cords that lie around (to be expected, that didn't bother me). The frustrating part was if you reached back to say hand the kids something and accidental touched the cord (and not hard at all) it would stop the dvd and you would have to start the whole dvd over. Really annoying. There were also a couple of times that the second monitor would stop and we would have to restart everything. I did end up returning this one as well and got a refund. It was very frustrating and disappointing. Be careful when purchasing this product - sounds like a hit or miss deal.

We bought this product for a long road trip for our two kids. After the first 4 hours / 2 movies the second tv screen stopped working. Then after another 2 hours the main dvd started giving us problems as well.

Firstly these arrived nice a quick. Secondly, they are perfect - exactly what I wanted. The cords are long enough so we can have them in the 2nd and 3rd row seats. The screen is nice and clear, DVDs run smoothly, and the kids find no problem with the operations (they only complain that they dont run when the car is turned off!!). Well worth the spend if you are after a simple in-car DFD.

In many ways, the unit is not bad. Good price, picture quality is fine, seems to generally work.
The BIG BIG STUPID problem is that, when powered off, it COMPLETELY resets and starts from the beginning. Fine for a home DVD players, but this is a CAR unit! When would the power go out? ALL THE TIME, whenever you turn off the car.
Seems a glaring omission. I was certain I was missing something until I researched and discovered this is just how it works. Since it's a DVD-cabal branded player, you must go through all the FBI warnings and other nonsense EVERY TIME you start it.
Stop to get gas? Better figure out where the kid's movie is before turning off the car. And be prepared to fiddle with the unit for 10 minutes before getting the lifeline back up and running.
This is THE BIG PROBLEM with this unit, and you should consider how much this would impact you before buying it.
The only other problem is that the volume is quite limited. If you're on the highway and are not in a luxury car (presumably not since you are considering buying this), you may not be able to hear well at max volume. Good enough for the backseat child entertainment though.

I bought this DVD player for trip to Washington, D.C. on August 1, which turned out to be a 12 hour drive. Along for the ride were my 4 and 5 year old niece and nephew. The only good thing I can say about the DVD player is that it was easy to install. The problem with the second monitor began about 4 hours into the trip. Nothing we did fixed it. Whenever it felt like working, it did. For the rest of the trip to/from D.C. my niece and nephew had to switch seats to watch movies -- depending on which monitor was working. Needless to say, I returned it and I'm waiting for my refund. If you plan to buy this DVD player for a long trip, don't do it. It's not dependable.

I bought the 9 inch version at Sam's club after looking at some reviews here. I was aware that some reviewers had trouble with one unit quitting after some time. I figured that the issue was with the 7 inch models and surely Phillips would have fixed the issue. However I was wrong. I got a great price and just like some of the other reviewers, one stopped working after about 10 days. I am pretty good with electronics but everything I tried did not work. Sam's Club was very good about exchanging it and I thought about getting another brand but liked everything about this one. The 9 inch screens was awesome and the one cord for both players was nice. Also, there was a nice feature that when the automobile was shut off and back on again, the DVD would start back up where it left off. Ok, I figured I just got a bad one and it could not happen again. But about 7 days after getting a replacement, the same exact thing happened and the bad thing it was on the same side that quit before. This time Sam's gave me my money back. I have a brand new vehicle and there is no problem with my electrical system; and I did try the changing the power cords on each side to no avail. I was surprised and will not buy this brand again. I have always thought highly of Philips products but for some reason they have not mastered DVD players. Very disappointed with the quality and the fact that I had to take the product back twice.
