From reading AVS forum I was ready to pull the trigger on a Panasonic G10. Then went to Best Buy to see them in person and this thing was just so much nicer in every way. I'm sorry Panny fanboys but the picture on the current models just looks dingy. The older ones were much nicer. Maybe they made too many compromises for the "eco" thing. And WAY reflective. Anyway, the Samsung came today, no more calibration that setting it to "movie" mode (will wait til after break-in for that). Watching a show about quasars & pulsars on DirecTV HD Channel (720p) and we are saying "whoo" and "wow" just like watching fireworks. The colors are vivid, but not harsh (like LCD's can be). No banding, jaggies. Incredibly detailed, but smooooth. It's just amazing. Flesh tones so natural it's like you're looking at a real person. This replaced a calibrated Samsung 56" DLP, which I preferred to anything I'd ever seen before (had it's caveats but LCD RPTVs were positively hazy at that time so I went with DLP since the rainbow thing was rare and didn't bother me - kind of pretty actually.) But this just blows it away. It's like the fog has lifted. Hot? Yes, it's putting off some heat; but I live in a cold climate (SF) so no big deal. Buzzing? If you put your ear right next to it (the hard drive in my DVR is way louder) but then I'm essentially at sea level, supposedly higher altitudes worsen that. Reflections? Yes, but nowhere as bad as CRT or (ahem) the current generation of MacBooks. It's glossy but subdued. For the first time I have an in-home viewing experience superior to a movie theatre. Just can't emphasize how natural the picture is. I hope Samsung & Panasonic will continue this technology. I love LCD TV for the kitchen, it's fine for watching the news, and great on the computer for static images, but this is a true videophile experience. Like MP3's (which sound great) vs full uncompressed quality digital sound. I can see how (especially sports oriented viewers) might prefer LCD - it's bright, sharp, vivid (especially if you're looking straight on - not so great off center). But if you want to see subtlety in light, shadow, cinematography - this new tech plasma is the way to go. Maybe the key is you need a technology where the pixels are producing their own light. The last time a picture was so smooth, natural, detailed to my eye were the last generation of Sony CRT Trinitron Wega sets. Perhaps OLED will be the next step up but I'm very happy with this. And Amazon's price, white-glove delivery, return policy can't be beat. The guys from Pilot unboxed it and made sure it was working before they left. Hauled it up 2 flights of stairs. I can't believe this marvel of technology was cheaper than a decent laptop.

5.0 out of 5 stars consumer/hobbyist with attention to details and perfection, November 5, 2009

This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
After years of enjoying my Mitsubushi WS55819 RPT I decided it was time to part. All my other equipment was paired with HDMI 1.3 and I could not take advantage of what HDMI offers (let alone the amazing advances in picture quality and energy savings) I spent a great deal of time researching and viewing several plasma and LCD televisions (I loath viewing televisions at big box stores. all the sets need to be calibrated to make viewing an objective observation). After research and observations I chose the Samsung PN58B860. By purchasing the HDTV thru Amazon I saved enough money to pay for it to be calibrated. I decided I had paid to have the best, it seemed silly not to spend a little more money to provide the best video output the television can offer. I had David Abrams from AVICAL calibrate my plasma tv. He has a long and impressive referance list. David charged $300 to calibrate and $60 for travel (I live 120 miles away from LA and it was on his tour schedule). To be sure it did need calibrating and I can tell you my magnificent picture became even clearer, the colors more outstanding, and the darks as dark as midnight on a moonless night. The telvision is paired with an ONKYO TX-SR876 Receiver (purchased thru Amazon), OPPO Blue-Ray Disc Player Model No. BPD-83 and an Oppo DVD Player Model No. DV-983 (purchased thru Amazon), Bright House HD Cable DVR, Paradigm Monitor 9 front speakers, CC-370 Center cahnnel, ADP-370 surrounds (side and back). I have no regrets about my purchase of the set and I know it will deliver years of entertainmnet to my family and friends...oh, and of course me!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW AMAZING TV, September 21, 2009
This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
I purchased this TV about 3 weeks ago from Amazon it arrived 1 day sooner than promised. The delivery people were very nice and put the tv in place and fired it up to make sure it all worked.
Now I had the Samsung 56" DLP with LED technology for about 2 1/2 years and that tv was very nice but we needed a little more room so we went with the flat panal.
The picture clarity of this tv surpasses other tv's in the same class. I compared it to the Pioneer Kudo series and it puts the Pioneer to shame. Granted I had to shop local stores to compare them before buying from Amazon but the time it took to reasearch this item was worth it in the end.
The Hi Def is outstanding in all aspects I use Directv for my tv broadcasts and their Hi Def feed. I also have a Playstation 3 which is used only for movies and that too was very impressive. This model has a network connection that was easy to setup. I plugged in a network wire from my router to the tv and I was on line. This gives the abilty to have news, weather, stock qoutes, and even YouTube can be accesed directly through the tv. I also found the tv has built in entertainment moduals like recipes, stories and music for small children and exercise workout information.
I also like the fact that the remote lights up makes it very easy to see when the lights are dim in the room. As for contrast I do not think you could ask for better. The blacks are black and not grainy the colors are very true to life right out of the box. Now you may want to tweak the color and tint to your likeing but this is true with al tv's.
The 1080P is a true 1080P unlike some tvs that use a 3:2 pull down, what this means is that it can do 24 FPS and also 60 FPS. Some 1080P signals are only in 24 FPS like Directv on demand 1080P movies and some tv's can not display a broadcast in 24 FPS and Directv 1080P can not be displayerd on a tv that uses 3:2 pull odwn technology.
My wife even commented on how much nicer this picture is compared to others we saw in the stores while shopping this out.
If you like a nice picture with lots of features you will not go worng with this new Samsung tv and it is only 1.2" thick!!!!!!
And lastly when I registered the tv on line with Samsung they gave me 3 additional months of warranty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buzzing is unbearable and Samsung is unable to fix, December 21, 2009
This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
While the picture quality of the TV is outstanding, our TV buzzed from the moment we set it up. Samsung sent out a repair guy that had to return to our house because he had no idea what part to use to stop the unit from buzzing. When the Samsung authorized repairman returned with the part, he blew out the panel of the TV because he was told to put the part in the wrong spot. That was over 2 weeks ago. We have made repeated calls to Samsung customer service to no avail. Samsung refuses to replace the tv and the repair shop is unable to fix the damage. We have been without a tv for over 2 weeks and, of course, we are out the money for the tv and Samsung refuses to replace the tv that their repair person damaged. Buyer beware.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, but the buzzing?..Oh Samsung!, October 13, 2009

This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
I have to say the Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV is an impressive package, the picture incredible. I could really go on and on about but all the things I like about this unit, design, ease of use and setup, etc... But, like the previous postings, I can't get past the buzzing noise. I initially exchange my unit for another after discussing the issue with Samsung, but the same buzzing noise was present in the replacement unit. The buzzing can be easily heard when the unit is turned on, muted, and in a quiet room from about 10' feet away, especially if you're sitting center stage to the unit. I can also occassionly hear buzzing during the quite scenes of a movie. Still deciding whether not to return it. I have not noticed this buzzing in units of this size from other manufactures.Sorry Samsung...this drops it from a 5 Star unit to a 3 Star, due to the annoyance factor.

First off, I got this TV for the insanely low price of $2,179 right here on Amazon.com. I just put the money aside and watched the price fluctuation until it dropped to the lowest price I thought it would go. Gotta shop smart on Amazon. Anyways, the TV is gorgeous and the fact that it's only about as thick as an LED TV amazes everybody. I'll start with the only two cons I have with this TV and that's the fact that it does run a little hot. It will raise the temperature in the room. Also, the Yahoo! Widgets are so slow that I won't even think twice about using them again. People complain about the buzzing noise, but the only time I ever hear it is when the room is completely quiet and there's no sound coming out of the speakers at all. As far as picture quality goes, it looks amazing. If you're like me, you hate the "soap opera" look of the 120HZ and 240HZ LCD and LED TV's. This plasma gives you amazing picture clarity and color while still maintaining the cinematic look when watching Blu Ray movies. Burn-in is going to happen and it will happen rather quickly for the first 100 hours of use. However, it's easily removed with the TV's side scrolling burn-in remover. I play XBOX 360 on this thing for hours at a time and haven't had anything stay on the screen permanently. In fact, I don't think I've noticed any burn-in after playing video games. The only time I've gotten any kind of burn-in is after watching a movie or TV program where the image doesn't take up the entire screen. The black bars on either the sides or the top and bottom will be noticeable, but easily removed.

Wow! I bought this TV to replace a 50" Panasonic plasma purchased 4 years ago. The difference in every way is amazing. The Panasonic was on the leading edge of HD when I bought it. Clearly the technology has progressed in quantum leaps.

This Samsung is beautifully constructed - super thin, clean design, high-quality materials. The TV is packed securely in a box that is not overly gigantic. It was moved several times before unpacking. When I finally did remove the box, which is very easy to do, everything was in perfect condition.

One of the big selling points for me is that it includes a stand that allows the unit to swivel.. and not just a few degrees. It really does travel close to 45 degrees in either direction - enough to cover any angle I need. The stand is a brushed silver metal and the stem is short, fat and clear. In total, it is a very attractive package.

There is a cool blue light that shines into the stem when the TV is on. This is the default setting for nearly all of the HD Samsungs. After a good bit of searching, I found the option to turn the light off in Menu > Setup (Plug and Play) > Light Effect. The stand was not an after-thought. If you don't need to mount the TV on a wall, this stand is a perfect alternative. Contrary to the User Guide, the TV came fully attached to the stand. It would be easy to remove for a wall mount installation.

The picture and on-board features are really excellent. I have it connected to a Comcast HD DVR, LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player and a Bose® CineMate® Series II Digital Home Theater Speaker System. The DVR and cable box are both connected with AmazonBasics Ultra-High-Speed HDMI Cable Braided (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging].

As described by other reviewers at Amazon and on other sites, including CNET, there are numerous adjustments if you care to refine the images. Out of the box, the default settings produce a beautiful picture. I won't write about this in detail as it would be a repeat of information and positive opinions that can be found elsewhere.

I am not using the on-board speakers so I can't comment on those.

The supplied remote is fine. However, I use the Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]. I have written separate reviews for this remote and the LG Blu-ray.

Finally, delivery by CEVA was exactly as promised - correct time and date, a call in advance of arrival, careful handling of the product. Although I have placed many hundreds of orders with Amazon in the past several years, this was my largest single product purchase. In the past, I have bought big-ticket items from other more local vendors. Based on my experience with this purchase, I would not hesitate to buy expensive product from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Plasma TV, December 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
Product was a 58" Plasma, and it works and looks great. I researched this product for about 2 weeks prior to making the purchase. Based upon x-mas specials at retail stores, they did not compare to the lower price, free shipping/delivery, and no taxes. There were a couple of other internet retailers that are selling this for about $20-$50 cheaper, but in my opinion they are unknown companies that do not have the same reputation as amazon. As this was my 1st large dollar internet purchase, felt safer going through Amazon. I was very interested in the high contrast ratio, size to price ratio, as well as the internet widgets sounded really cool. Two of the three ended up being well worth it. The internet widgets sound neat, especially when it references wireless internet connection, but the widgets are very slow, moderately difficult to use and just not worth being a deciding factor in the purchase.
I was a little concerned about some of the reviews about white lines and buzzing. Looking into the details of those reviews, they reference a LCD TV, wonder if they reviewed the wrong product or if the issue is isolated to the LCD model. I'm not experiencing either.
When I was researching this product, I was deciding between this and the 55" LED model Samsung UN55B8000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz LED HDTV that was on sale selling for about the same price as this. Went to the store to get a comparison. The image is exactly the same, except the LED is a lot brighter, which to me ruined the picture especially if big on sports. I really did not notice the motion blur the LED model offered as well. Only selling point was the LED uses 40% less power than the Plasma and small anti-glare improvement. Surprisingly there is a large size difference between 55" and 58" and this ended up being the deciding factor. So again, it came down to the Plasma being well worth the price for its size.
Pilot delivered the TV UPSTAIRS to the room I was planning on setting it. They put the TV on the stand, hooked it up, made sure the remote was working, and removed the box. When I made mention of the white lines, they said that in the 14 times they've delived a Samsung TV, they've only seen it once, and showed me where it would be. TV looks great with Blu-ray movies and HD channels.
I've had the TV for a few days and only have two minor let downs --the TV inputs available and the remote. I had assumed incorrectly that it would have audio/video cable inputs. I had planned to hook up a WII and an old stero system that used audio/video cables, and ended having to buy new cables. Had to purchase WII componet cables and a digital optical cable to be able to use those items. Based upon the quality of the picture, I fully understand Samsung did not want to dimish the product with inferior input cables.
The remote is an abosolute piece of junk. It is not ergonomical, with more weight towards the front which puts stress on the hand holding it. The names on the buttons use odd names to reference what they do. Button placement is also very poor. Thankfully the universal remote that comes with the cable box allowed me to replace this.
When you purchase this TV, you will really want to get the HD package and blu-ray player...it is absolutely mind blowing how awesome the picture is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Picture - Terrible Buzzing...But Curable, December 14, 2009
By J. Sankey (Ottawa, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
I'll try to keep this short as there's not much for me to say about the picture, as it is outstanding. Man, was I shocked at how loud the buzz was. However, every time I stood up it to investigate the buzz would decrease to almost nothing. Investigating behind and around the TV you can definitely hear the buzzing emanating from the top right of the unit, but strangely not nearly as loud as sitting down. To compound things, if I switched chairs to the left I could barely hear the buzz that almost made the set unwatchable from the chair near the wall. Additionally, if I would rise up to just above TV level I couldn't hear it either. What I've found is; depending on where you're sitting influences how much you hear the buzz. I noticed that sitting in the chair right next to the wall was unbearable. So I moved the TV away from the wall that was only a few inches away from the side of the TV and the sound almost goes away. Moving it forwards and backwards had no effect; the buzz persisted. I have to conclude by keeping the right side of the TV near a wall actually amplifies the buzz. This is why you're not hearing any of the buzz in stores (as well as background noise). This TV needs room on each side, which sucks for those who want it in an entertainment unit, or don't have the flexibility to move it around. All-in-all I'm very disappointed that Samsung would distribute a TV with such a loud buzzing noise, even given the fact if you walk right up to it and listen, it's quite acceptable. But they should have tested it in different environments...I'd still buy it again.

Also, as nice as the stand looks, it's doesn't instill confidence. It's one central mount is weakish and allows the TV to sway. They did however include a tether wire to put on the wall.

The sound sucks as well, but what do you expect from a TV this thin. Based on this and the lack of multiple inputs/outputs, one has to assume that people who buy this TV are going to use a receiver and external speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Picture by far, July 14, 2009
By R. Schmitt (Louisville, KY) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Samsung PN58B860 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Electronics)
I purchased this TV about a week ago and have really gotten to love the picture. If you do buy this you really need a Blue Ray Player. The Blue Ray movies are fantastic.

Overall this was very easy to set up and the picture looks great right out of the box with no adjustments. This is a big tv at 58" and the HDMI hook ups really make things life like. I hooked it up to a Onkyo receiver with 7.1 surround sound for the ultimate theater experience. I really didn't like the sound coming from the built in speakers for a set this big.

My son hooked up Xbox360, Wii and Playstation 3 to the set and the motion in the games is great along with unbelievable graphics.

This set has pretty much run 24-7 since we got it without a flaw. The only thing that I really didn't care about was the internet connectivity. You really don't get to do much except look at weather, stock and a few other widgets. I do recommend a clean power source with this TV like one made by Monster to keep from getting power spikes.

I think there is no other choice for price and picture. I looked at the Pioneer Elite and felt this had a much better picture along with being much thinner at 1.2" but it still weighs 100lb's and that's pretty heavy to move.

This is one big, bright and sharp picture. I am very happy with my purchase.
