An impulse buy to replace an aging laptop my wife uses in place of a home desktop. A good price got me interested - but had some worries about 'only' 1GB of RAM and the ATOM processor. Could this bargain basement machine get the job done?

The XL operating system uses less memory than the current bloated VISTA OS and so far - it seems that 1GB will suffice for my wifes computer routine - mainly websurfing/downloading articles and printing newsletters. I believe one can stuff up to 1.5 GB of RAM into this box - but that's plan "B" - and only if needed. I attached the computer to a 22" 16:9 ratio monitor - the shared memory video card seems to handle it ok.

I've attached a 500GB external hard drive to insure no storage problems - but 160 GB internal is a nice size. Setup was a snap, performance is adequate - Microsoft Office runs a little slow (compared to my Dual Core Intel laptop processor)- (EXCEL spreadsheets of any size or complexity of formulas should probably use a more capable machine). Photo editing is yet another decision point. Minor editing is ok using lite software ... but this is NOT a candidate machine for photoshop editing unless it is very casual and one is not used to runing this program on a larger (RAM) and faster (processor) machine. Computer gaming - again - depends how much memory and processor speed needed by the game engine; many graphics intensive games will not run on a shared video memory graphics card ... another place not to press your luck.

Eventually you will forget which machine you're on in a multi-computer household and hit a computer 'brick wall' processing wise ... but it hasn't happened yet. Good value for the money - but don't press your processing luck if you're used to faster machines at work or at home. As said in a previous review - a great second machine and a good value for the money.

A candidate for younger school children and lite office work. A great place to start comparison shopping if you are a budget driven consumer.

Ok - if you are looking for a simple, no-frills computer to do "office" tasks, surf the internet, store and play music and watch DVDs, this might be just the computer for you. It is small, quite quiet and sips energy where my other quad-core beast gulps it. For 85% of my computer needs, this computer has it covered.

Purchased in good faith. It arrived DOA. That's okay. Stuff happens. I understand that. What I DON'T understand however is why I still haven't gotten my money back. This company's a turtle when it comes to issuing a refund. Would not buy from again. They really should rethink the way they handle these matters. Good will can go a long way towards building a customer base. I don't believe they get it!

I bought this computer when my Compaq Presario crashed unexpectedly. I had it for 9 years and loved it like it was one of my kids. I didn't have the money to spend on a similar computer so when I saw this one for $248 I ordered it. I find that this e-machine is mainly good for surfing the internet and sending e-mail. When I bought a virus shield the computer wouldn't read it. I assumed it was the disk and returned it, but when I dropped $160 on Microsoft Office Home and Student I, again had trouble downloading the software to my computer. It is kind of like taking a step back in time. I started trying to download the software at 5pm and here it is 7:23 pm and just now finished. I tried to enter the product key number and click continue and thought I'd be on my merry way in 5 seconds, but nope. The system wouldn't allow me to enter the product key. I had to remove the free trial software manually and re-install. It has been my personal experience at home and at work that this wasn't necessary. The new software would overlay or be removed automatically. This computer is FUNCTIONAL, but I would not use it as your main home computer in this day and age. It is an ok computer, but it is a little more work than I expected, but as I said, you get what you pay for. It is dependable. I will give it that (so far). I've had it for about 2.5 months. Hopefully I won't have to upload anymore software. The only way I was able to get virus softare on this computer was to go through Verizon FIOS. They sent me their link and I downloaded the virus shield.

03/28/10 - Just thought I'd make an update. I have already had to order a new keyboard b/c the one that came with the computer broke already. The good news is that there were no questions asked and customer service sent out a new keyboard (the same cheap kind that came with the computer) within 3 business days. This computer has me all kinds of nervous. I do a lot of stuff online and cannot function w/o a computer.

I'm no IT professional, but I do know the basics when shopping for a computer. For $[...], this is way overpriced. The Atom processor is one of the worst out there, the 1.7 Ghz speed is slow compared to comparably priced desktops (most offering 2 something to 3...P.S. faster is better), and the 1 GB of RAM is a joke. I have nothing against eMachines as I've had one before and it worked fine, but do some comparision shopping and you'll quickly see that there are MUCH better deals out there. I would suggest [...], or other Amazon desktops. Spend the extra $50-$100 and you'll get a computer at least twice as "good" as this one. Plus, you'll get Windows 7 already installed which is a much better operating system. Good luck.

I became fascinated with eMachines when my big powerful computer crashed and my son loaned me his eMachine. I liked that it had XP instead of Vista.....XP is one of my favorite operating systems. So, I began to search for an eMachine with XP (most computers no longer have XP)and I found the eMachines EL1600-01 with XP SP3. I have had it for a week now and am very pleased with it. It has adequate processor speed, RAM, and hard drive for everything I wish to do with it. An added benefit for me is that is will run some of my favorite older programs that I can't use on my Vista 64-bit computer. Overall, this is an excellent, reasonably priced computer and is a great back-up when the "big-boy" crashes.

i bought this machine for an elderly person who has a need for a pc but uses it less often than most people and is very cost conscious.
Pros
a great machine new technology great price.
eight(8) usb ports wow. i had to build my own pc to get that.
this machine was built for XP home edition and it works just fine.
for an elderly person who uses a pc sparingly this machine is the one for them.
the os can be burned to DVD for future reinstall if needed.
in that the memory requirements are much less for XP compared to vista or win7 the 1 gig of ram is plenty even for watching dvd movies.
