Just the right challenge
I just finished Pahelika and enjoyed it very much.
This is a game of having to find objects, at times having to combine them and of course having to use them. Add to that puzzles that range from easy to more challenging and you have a fun game that will keep you entertained for a number of hours.

Just the right challenge, July 26, 2009

I just finished Pahelika and enjoyed it very much.
This is a game of having to find objects, at times having to combine them and of course having to use them. Add to that puzzles that range from easy to more challenging and you have a fun game that will keep you entertained for a number of hours.
I don't usually enjoy puzzle games too much because I tend to get frustrated if I can't solve a puzzle within a reasonable amount of time but the Pahelika puzzles had just the right complexity for me - starting out easy and getting more complex as the game progressed. One exception was the Teleporter Room which I only solved by accident and that was after downloading the free walk-through from the Ironcode website. But I'm sure that this was just me :-)
The variety of puzzles was also great - memory puzzles, slider challenges, questions, sequential puzzles and much more. While the challenges usually get solved in the room one is in, at times the game offers the possibility to go back to a room or two in order to complete something or get something from there, thus adding interest to the game.
The one thing I didn't enjoy too, too much was the sound effects. If one gets stuck in a room for a while attempting to solve a puzzle, the sounds get old quickly, regardless of how low the volume is set. So I found myself muting my volume a lot.
But that's a small thing, and for the price this game is offered here at Amazon, it is a no-brainer. Get it! :-)

Terrific Game, September 5, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
I like games that involve lots of puzzles. Pahelika has many different types of puzzles to solve to move forward and the puzzles vary in difficulty from pretty straightforward to those that really require some thinking. The game does a good job of starting off with clues and tips to get you going but pretty soon you know what to look for and the puzzles become more difficult. There is a downloadable "strategy guide" but I didn't need to use it. My only complaint is that there are a couple of puzzles where you have to use "brute force" trial and error to solve the problem. In those situations you just need to use a systematic approach so that you don't spend your life repeating sequences you've already tried. Graphics a good and I got about 14 hours of enjoyable play out of the game before finishing it which, in my opinion, is worth the cost of the game.

Lovely and Easy, July 25, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
Might be a bit easy for some, lovely graphics though. There was a lot of variation at each location so it didn't seem to be repetitive during the free trial.
I do suggest trying it first as it was a bit too easy for me.

Fun game but irritating, December 20, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
This was a pretty fun game, imaginative and nice visually. Part of it was an interesting challenge, part was just inane.
The most irritating thing about this game is that it doesn't tell you what the objects are. You click on something, it comes into your possession, and you have no idea what it is so you can't figure out what to do with it. I had a pile of round objects I figured were either grapes or cannonballs, but they were coal. Some pronged thingy turned out to start the fire. At some points I ended up clicking on absolutely anything because I had no idea where my cache of poorly rendered miscellaneous shapes went - it takes some of the puzzle-solving fun out of the game.
For the parts that *were* possible to solve, the game would often throw aggressive hints at you, taking any fun out of solving. There's a part where you have to figure out what combination of 6 buttons to press, and after 2 wrong guesses it starts hammering you with hints. I ended up squinting so I couldn't see the hints so that I could preserve the challenge.
Some of the puzzles were good, but after a while they just gave up and started giving you repeats of previous puzzles. Also, most of the puzzles weren't very imaginative - just digital versions of what I used to play at my grandparents' house. Want to get past the big threatening robot? Then solve this jigsaw puzzle of an adorable puppy! I swear they hired my grandpa as a consultant.
It's worth a play, unless you really want a challenge - in that case I would go elsewhere.

A bargain at $6.99!, September 11, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
You the player-adventurer are off to find a magical book, Pahelika, which has been hidden for centuries and which has the power to right the wrongs of the world. Your quest takes you into many strange and wonderful environments and the graphics in this game are very good indeed. You must find hidden objects, combine them to perform a function, and these combinations are often quirky and not particularly logical and solving the challenges of each scene so you can move on is in no way a pushover. The mini-puzzles you encounter along the way are the usual sliders, jigsaws, memory games, etc but they are pleasant.
Pahelika is fun. It has just the right combination of easiness and hardness to keep you going and interested without becoming a basket case in sheer frustration- or bored. Perhaps it is a game for the dilettante, rather than the deadly serious game player, and if you are a casual gamer who likes to smell the roses along the way, Pahelika is your cup of tea!

Fun, but over too soon for me, December 6, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
I enjoy puzzle games that are challenging but not at the level of, say, Myst. I bought this after reading a review that said the game took the reviewer 14 hours so was hopeful it would present just the right challenge or would take long enough to be worth the money. However, it only took me about 4.5 hours with virtually no helps at all. I think I need to find a game that's either a bit more challenging or with more going on. (Any suggestions?) If you are new to puzzle games, this is a really good one to try. Now that I think about it, maybe I'm better off with shorter games like this since I have a really hard time quitting a game until I conquer it! ;)

Not bad for a download, April 19, 2010
Fun:

Got this a few weeks ago. It is easy to play and the puzzles are sightly below average in difficulty. It was worth the price, and the graphics are cute, but there is no real challenge.

Most challenging game and fun too. This game kept me going for several days, and I am on my computer everyday, most of the day. I recommend this game.

Astonishingly Bad!, December 29, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
Don't waste your time downloading the free trial or the full game. There is nothing interesting, challenging, stimulating, rewarding, or enjoyable about this game. The graphics are far below even mediocre games. The game play is simplistic and frequently interrupted by stupid hints or messages. I can't begin to understand how this is a best-selling download. Yikes!

No great challenge, December 9, 2009
Fun:
This review is from: Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download] (Software Download)
I haven't really played computer games since I outgrew Oregon Trail and Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego? -Although who ever really outgrows Oregon Trail? :) - Anyway, I have never played any puzzle/adventure type games and I wanted to try something new, give it a shot, and I started here. I don't know that I expected much from a $7 download, but here's what I got:
Pahelika is a decent intro to the whole concept of point-and-click puzzle games. You have to "find" or pick up the various elements and tools you need, and figure out how to combine them or use them with your surroundings to get the results you need. The puzzles were pretty easy and also a bit repetitive. And it's not actually possible to screw up - the game won't let you, instead telling you "that won't work," "if you use the spell now it will be wasted," etc. So as a consequence-free intro, it's not bad. I spent a pleasant couple of hours playing through it, but there's definitely no point in playing it twice. I definitely want more challenge and variety from the next game I play.
