1.0 out of 5 stars You cannot downgrade
Be careful with this. If you are running an earlier version of Quicken Deluxe you cannot downgrade to the 2010 Quicken Starter Edition. Your backup is not able to be imported. I had to purchase the Unlock from Intuit to be able to use my old data.

This software was just what I was looking for to replace Microsoft Money. I have used Money Deluxe for 5+ years and was disappointed that it was going to be discontinued. I decided to try the starter version of Quicken and it was just what I needed! It keeps track of all my accounts, checking, savings, and credit. All the transactions are downloaded whenever I open the software. Bill reminders were a breeze to set up, and can be programmed with the link for the payee site, or your bank.

Simple and easy to use! I recommend this for anyone wanting to get a start on tracking their finances.

3.0 out of 5 stars Appears to be compatible with previous Quicken Basic, January 24, 2010

Before I downloaded this, I read the reviews that said it would not downgrade from the earlier Deluxe versions. "No problem", I thought. I was using the 2007 Basic program so I ASSUMED that it would work. That's not a downgrade, after all...

Well, during the install, the software tells you that it won't accept previous versions of data. However, I went through the install process (after backing up my data files on a different drive) and the 2010 Starter version DID convert my Quicken 2007 Basic files for use. A pleasant surprise to be sure.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unethical behavior!!! Don't buy this software!!, April 10, 2010

The software hangs when I try to open my existing quicken file, I finally got around the problem by allowing the silly (not the work I would like to use!!) software to create a new file and then opening my old file. Just when I think m travels through Intuit h*** are over the software complains that I cannot use my existing data file because it was last saved using Quicken Deluxe.

The software forces you to upgrade via their website for an additional $30 for a total of $55 (25+30)!!! I could have bought the deluxe version online for $42 if I had known I was trapped into using the deluxe version.

This is absolutely unethical behavior!!! Can't wait to dump this worthless program.

No way to provide direct feedback to Amazon because it was a digital download. Ridiculous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Replacement for Microsoft Money 2004, February 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Quicken Starter Edition 2010 [Download] (Software Download)
I have been using Microsoft Money 2004 since... well 2004 and I have been very happy with it. I have always stored Microsoft Money 2004 files on a network drive so my wife and I could use our own computers and update our joint accounts. It worked perfectly for years until I installed Windows 7 on both my and my wife's PCs. Suddenly I was getting some major errors every time I opened up Microsoft Money, so I needed to replace it, but since Microsoft no longer sells Money I started looking at Quicken.

Even though Intuit says not to store the files on a network drive, I need the flexibility and with the multiple computer networks in many homes today, Intuit should write their software to support it. It has worked very well so far and I back up constantly, so hopefully file corruption won't be an issue.

I do like Quicken, but I think for 2010 it is a little behind the times. The register looks like an Excel table and you enter deposits and withdrawals in the table. I liked how Money had you entering transactions like a check. A couple things I dislike about the register: 1. You can't just highlight a transaction, your cursor is always ready to edit something. Sometimes you just want to sit back and look at the data and not have what is highlighted ready to edit. 2. Whatever row is highlighted has a tab that hangs below or above the highlighted row and blocks the view of part of that row. Just annoying.

Getting to a specific account is a breeze, and the menus are set up pretty well so you can find what you need. It takes a little getting used to so you can "Reconcile" your account (as Quicken puts it) rather than "Balance". The Reconcile feature is very nice and easy to use. I like to manually reconcile my checking account and it makes it easy to do.

Since it has the account tracking I need in an easy to use format and the ability to access Quicken files on a network drive, I will stick with it. It is a good replacement for Microsoft Money to track your accounts and spending.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hate it!!! Won't import my bank transactions., January 21, 2010

Waste of my money. This is the worst banking software ever. This version is going backwards from a quicken version I used over 10 years ago in a now obsolete computer. Hope I can upgrade to a version that will import from my bank which is not on the list for this version. I will retract this review if I am allowed to upgrade without losing money. Sorry to be so negative, but I'm so disappointed....

1.0 out of 5 stars Cannot import existing data from Deluxe version, January 20, 2010

I have been a satisfied basic Quicken user for more than 10 years. I upgraded the deluxe version in 2008 because it was "free" with a rebate. Now I find out that I cannot use the 2010 basic version with my old data and have to create all new data. Or continue to buy the more costly deluxe version (which includes features I do not need). This is a real gotcha - not forecast when upgrading earlier - consumer beware.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep it Simple!, December 30, 2009

This is an excellent program to manage your personal finances if you are looking for something simple. Just like the box says it is "Simple Money Management". This will import your data from the 2008 and 2009 Quicken Starter Editions. I recently upgraded from the 2008 version and it transferred my data without a problem. I especially love the calender feature, bill reminder and cash flow graph. I cannot plan anything without having a visual image of when something is suppose to actually happen on the calender. So that is a must feature for me. The only downside if there is one, is that this program will not track loan information for you. If you need that feature then you probably need to go with one of the other Quicken programs. I can track my loan on-line so that's not a biggie for me. Now if they would just make a program this good and put it on-line for all of us, that would be awesome. Hope this helps!

Software does not recognize previous quicken data. You have to spend more to get this compatability. Funny it doesn't say that here. Also, you will be forced to download and install an Amazon "Game and Software Downloader" This program defaults to your startup folder so it is always running on your machine as if you needed this to download. I am very suspicious of this type of practice. You are not warned or told you must do this prior to purchase. I will never buy a download from Amazon again as long as this type of shady practice is in place.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth 1 Star!, April 18, 2010
By Mad Cat (Illinois) - See all my reviews

Buyer BEWARE!

Who would bundle a program with Turbo Tax that claims to be a new edition when in reality it is a NEW program! Quicken 2010 Starter is not compatible with anything previous Quicken Deluxe users have. Instead Intuit forces you to go to their website and purchase an upgrade to allow you to use your previous version data. They won't even let you run the program, instead shutting it down, unless you agree to start from scratch. Shame on YOU Intuit. Time to uninstall and reinstall my Deluxe 2008.

What were they thinking???
