5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice, fantastic product.
My original review on this combo wasn't good, however I was contacted by CPO Ryobi & asked to return it at their expense, which I did. My combo kit was delivered yesterday, way ahead of schedule and it is absolutely great. It lives up to everything in the product description, in fact it looks as if it's brand new, something that I didn't expect. I can't say enough good...

UPDATE: AFTER CHARGING BOTH BATTERIES I JUST DISCOVERED THAT ONE OF THEM DOES NOT WORK AT ALL

I understand that refurbished or reconditioned means that I am not getting something new. I never expected reconditioned to mean beat up though. Now the tools in this kit are actually in great shape, however one of the batteries looks like it has been used for years and it is all banged/scratched up. The bag used to carry the tools is frayed and has stains all over it. These couple of items have been through the wringer which brings the quality of this purchase way down. Typically when I buy refurbbed items they look brand new and look like they have never been used. This is not the case here.

So this came with a beat up battery and a battery that does not even work. Would not reccomend this seller.

I am extremely disappointed at this purchase. The Ryobi tools are good tools. But, it was a poor choice to buy them on-line from Amazon. The write up was very deceiving. It did describe that factory reconditioned tools might have scratches. The write-up however said "1 new set available for $195.99." In different screens it said factory reconditioned. It was difficult to know what we were getting. The tools sent look like rummage sale tools. They have been used hard and even the batteries are all scratched up. The recipricating saw looks like it has been chewed on. I am extremely dissappointed that I didn't go to Home Depot and get a brand new set for just $50 more. I would return them for a full refund but after ordering them, I sold my old set that I had had several years that looked much newer than what I got. I would have thought the reconditioned set might at least have new batteries as the lifespan of Ryobi batteries has long been the products downfall.

1.0 out of 5 stars (VIDEO)The Ryobi Combo Kit (ZRP844) is a poorly reconditioned product. I would not purchase again., June 16, 2010

This is a video of the Ryobi Combo Kit (ZRP844) purchased through Amazon in June 2010 from CPO Ryobi.

[...]

This 'Combo Kit' was purchased so my mom could have some decent tools of her own, that way I could stop bringing my own tools when things need to be fixed at her place. I came across this Amazon listing and initially thought it sounded like a pretty good deal. Boy was I wrong!

Now I didn't expect these tools to be perfect, maybe a few scratches or small dings, but I would have never guessed I'd receive tools that looked like they were purchased from a garage sale. I've purchased refurbished blenders, appliances, lawn mowers, and even a reconditioned bathtub. Never have I regretted purchasing a reconditioned product as much as I regret purchasing this 'combo kit.' Everything else I've purchased that is reconditioned looks pretty good and you really have to look for signs of wear, but not with this Ryobi set. Not only have these tools been used rather hard, some of the tools don't even work.

My first problem was with the drill. I thought is was in pretty good condition at first, but when I went to adjust the torque setting, the drill tightened up as it neared the drill-bit setting. Now I played with these tools a good bit before and since receiving this drill and I can say as a matter of fact that the drill is not supposed to be that way.

I also had a problem with the condition of the reciprocating saw, circular saw, and large battery. The saws both showed extensive wear on the grips. The mechanical parts seemed to be fine and worked well, but the rubber grips had holes worn into the grip. This concerns me for a couple reasons, the first being that these holes will only get bigger and eventually I will start wearing down the plastic. Second, how hard were these tools used that someone wore through the grip? If these tools were used a lot, then that means the battery was used a lot too, and I wont have a battery with as much life left had I purchased new. The replacement batteries cost almost as much as a new combo kit. My main problem with the battery was that it had paint lodged in the seams of the case. How can they say these are reconditioned when they don't even bother to clean old paint of the tools? I was able to get most all of the paint out with a toothpick and a couple squirts of goof-off. The smaller battery had what seemed like glue on the bottom of it, only took 30 seconds to clean, but again why wasn't that already done?

These tools are described in the listing as like-new, and the condition of the tools upon ordering is described as new. These tools are used and show a lot of wear, that is how I would describe them.

I almost forgot to mention how bad the bag looked. I would have guessed it had been left outside in a month-long dust storm, it was that dirty. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Something else worth mentioning that isn't in the listing: these tools are all branded with the word 'RECON.' You can see what I am talking about if you watch the video, look at the bottom of the smaller battery that is all sticky. Again not that big of a deal, but I feel like I should have been told about this in the listing. If these were my everyday tools I would have been a little upset that I didn't know this before purchasing.

To some people these issues may be no big deal, and if just one of these problems existed, I would probably think very differently of my purchase. The way these tools were described though, and for only a [...] discount compared to Home Depot, I expected more for my money.

For what it's worth, I talked to CPO Ryobi and they sent a replacement, claiming that tools usually aren't as bad off as this. Well guess what? The replacement unit was just as bad. If you order this expect a used product that may be pretty beaten up. Moreover, Ryobi knows how poor a condition these tools are in and they are the ones that okay them for resale. CPO should make the true condition better known though.

This refurbished Ryobi cordless set was an excellent buy. The tools were unmarked, the two Lithion batteries charged quickly and held their charge and all tools appeared to be brand new. The set came with a wheeled duffel, saw blades, charger and all manuals. These tools are not designed for all day use on a job site but at roughly i/4 of the price for a set of Dewalts and for use around the home you can't go wrong.
I highly recommend them.

Have purchased from CPO Ryobi before...has always been great ...but this time the items were a little rough. They do work but their condition did not inspire a high level of confidence upon opening the packaging. This was likely a fluke. I know they can do better...and usually do.

This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi One+ 18V Cordless Lithium-ion 4-Piece Combo Kit ZRP844 (Misc.)
I like this combo kit. I use these tools for set building, and switch them all day. I use the drill a lot, but granted, I don't use anything continuously all day. The drill is great, usually the torque autoshift is just convenient and faster, but sometimes it would be nice to start manually downshifted, though pulling the trigger just a little fits the bill. The trigger though has too long of a pull before it activates. The magnetic screw holder is a lifesaver. This tool is heavier and less torquey than the big names, but does everything I've needed... anything else would be a job for a more powerful tool in the first place. The saws are both totally awesome, especially the circular. The safeties are a slightly annoying feature... come on, these are power tools, they are inherently unsafe, and no safety will stop a fool from hurting himself! Ryobi is the only brand to include this (ironically, what looks like a safety in other brands actually locks the saw trigger in place). The light is great, though for at least the past three years no light can be excused for not being an LED, and it's not. Does Ryobi, or most of the other manufacturers for that matter, think we failed to notice the rapid proliferation of these lights? The batteries are great... these lithium tools are better than any NiCads of any brand. And the fact that they slap in instead of slide on like Makita or Milwaukee is far easier. I appreciate that the batteries are backwards compatible to previous tools... though I wish they would hurry up and make everything this green color so all my future stuff would match! The charge level button on the battery is so cool and useful, though it isn't present on the compact one. I would rather have had two large batteries, though I appreciate a lighter battery once in a while.

I was worried about buying this kit, some people bag on Ryobi tools because they're cheaper... but they work fantastic! Bottom line is that I could not have afforded most brands of combo kit, and I needed tools! I gave them a shot, as they were warranted, and these tools work very well... they've made me an independent force to be reckoned with! I'll be looking into the power paint backpack system soon. Thanks, Ryobi, you're helping me work like a pro even though I'm just starting out.

This review is from: Factory-Reconditioned Ryobi One+ 18V Cordless Lithium-ion 4-Piece Combo Kit ZRP844 (Misc.)
I received mine within 2 days of ordering and, altho it is refurbished (visibly you can tell it was used, but definately not abused). Any tool set I own would've looked in the condition I receieved this in within a month anyway so I don't know the fuss that others have with reconditioned tools not looking good. All items work well, the price is great for Lithium and it included everything I needed. I would recommend this to family and friends.
