Hit and miss,
By Levi Stofer "_leon_" (Lawrenceville, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scorpio Rising (Audio CD)
I bought this cd because it has the song "Girls" which was used in the film "Lost In Translation". I found that track to be a lovely mix of soothing voices and modern rock sounds. The rest of the album has moments that are just as good if not better, but it also has moments that don't work well. The collaboration with Liam Gallagher on the title track is cool as well as tracks 6 and 10 which feature a very nice female vocalist who you can't really comprehend lyrically. The opening track "Leather" is an upbeat intro and gets the album going on an engaging start. Track 3 "Hands Around My Throat" kind of ruins it for me though. Not much to that one. Unfortunately, the others I haven't mentioned also fall into that category which makes this a 50% listenable experience. I don't know that I could truly reccommend this unless you blow money on music frequently. Nothing amazing on this disc.

i guess Death In Vegas have a few famous pals and these pals were gracious enough to lend their vocals to some of these songs. the basic mood here is dark rock music with a danceable edge. or perhaps the other way around. but there's alot of shifts in moods and atmosphere. the opening track kinda reminds me of some of those 4AD bands like Swallow or maybe Ultra Vivid Scene, with it's distorted bass and cool breathy female background vocals. a pretty good way to start the record. but as the album continues, there seems to be a lack of focus. this record doesn't really grab me as a whole; even though there are some good songs on it. one feeling i get is that i am never really getting to know Death In Vegas for who they are. it's like all their songs were specifically written for their special guests. the mellow acoustic numbers go to Hope Sandoval, the electro groove numbers go to the more throaty singers, etc. it seems a little too safe and in the box. but like i said, there are some nice moments. Scorpio Rising is a fairly enjoyable album, just not an essential one.

Great (dare I say it) chill-out music...,
This review is from: Scorpio Rising (Audio CD)
Death In Vegas' "Scorpio Rising" is a delicious mix of slow burning rock, ice cold electro and hippy mantras. Some would be familiar with "Girls", a slow burning rock fuzz track with dreamy vocals (included in the Lost in Translation OST), others would know the Liam Gallagher - Scorpio Rising track (not to dissimilar with Liam's previous collaborations with the Chemical Brothers) - so so catchy. Others would know the bitter icy track of "Hands Around My Throat" - where Death in Vegas use the electroclash sounds to brilliant effect (my favourite track).
Death in Vegas step in and out of various musical styles with the slightest of ease throughout Scorpio Rising. This is the sort of CD that is brilliant for dinner parties and such. Cool, modern and sexy. One small blip on the CD is the misjudged "So You Say You Lost Your Baby" with Paul Weller - a out of place rock tune which just grates against the smoothness of the rest of the CD. Overall - if you like (dare I say it) "chill-out" music - then you will probably like this.

BAM. a new death in vegas album.,

yes, it's like an instrumental enema. while you listen you may think, "what kind of music is this?" well it's DEATH IN VEGAS. this new album continues slithering in the same direction as its predecessor, the Contino Sessions. this is talent perverted at its best- and the songs vary dramatically, as do the guest vocalists. as usual, it may be hard to listen to at first for most people, but it will sink in.. and eventually overpower you. play it in the background of a late night party.

Death in Vegas still alive,
This review is from: Scorpio Rising (Audio CD)
That this album still sounds fresh is testimony to it's quality. Do yourself a favour, if you don't have it - buy it just to hear Liam Gallagher's snarl. One of my favourite records and an essential in my view

Great!,

Many people will not like this CD because they don't get Death In Vegas' style. They're very much into giving their listeners something new with every track. Girls, Hands around my throat, Scorpio Rising, 23 Lies all sound different. It's insane how good they are! Get this album for something original and refreshing.

As a fan of bands such as Portishead and Massive Attack I bought this album basically for three tracks which were Hands Around My Throat, Girls, and 23 Lies. -All excellent songs and I expected the rest of the cd to resemble them but that was horribly erroneous. When I got to track eight I just about had enough; honestly I couldn't help but laugh at how bad the rest of this album was turning out. Fortunately when track nine (Diving Horses) flipped on I was relieved and once again glad I had purchased this album. Turns out Diving Horses is, if not their best song, definately one of them. This was my first Death in Vegas album and after seeing their "diversity" this will also probably be my last. Don't get me wrong I can appriciate some diversity but when an album goes from songs like 23 Lies to Scorpio Rising or So You Say You Lost Your Baby to Diving Horses then it's time to stop buying their entire albums and start downloading individual songs.

The Death Are back,
By A Customer
This review is from: Scorpio Rising (Audio CD)
This latest Album from Death In Vegas has to be there greatest work yet. The title track Scorpio Rising with Liam Gallagher supplying the vocals has to be the pick of the bunch. This one track is worth the price of the album, however you shouldn't think this album is a one hit wonder all the other tracks are excellent. They will reach out and tenderly rap themselves around your ear drums, until you find yourself play the album over and over again. Well I did away, just buy the album and you will find out.

Title comes from a motion picture by Kenneth Anger. Album art work is stills from the film. Alas! there is no photo of a topless Milli Small singing My Boy Lollipop before a crowd of young men engaged in an orgy, the song is not on this cd, but one cannot have everthing. The music is super, half instrumental half vocals. Singers include Liam Gallagher(Oasis)Paul Weller(the Jam).If you give this cd to a Scorpio on their bithday you'll see their personality literally transform into an eagle right before your eyes. They might even smile. Flattery will get you most anything.Anyway, you'll make their day. This is one of the best cd's of the new millinium.Very Very eclectic. Brilliant of the group to salute Kenneth Anger: also, recommended Lucifer Rising soundtrack.Favorite cuts;Leather/Girls/Hands Around My Throat/23 Lies(banjos and ragas from the Indian subcontinent, how marvelous. I'm running out of superalitives. Enjoy!Happy Birthday,Scorpio.

Good Stuff,

At first listen, I didnt like it as much as the Contino Sessions, which is brilliant in my opinion, but the second time I listened to it, I realized that I did in fact love this album. All songs are really good. I was surprised to see "Girls" in the Lost In Translation soundtrack. (They should have put the Peaches song on it too... You all know which one...Wimps...) Its hard to pick favorites, as they are all good, but I would have to say 'Scorpio Rising', and the 2 Hope Sandoval songs, because I love her. Especially the last song, 'Help Yourself'. OK, so I have an absolute favorite. It is 'Help Yourself'. A very long song, but absolutely worth it. Ill be looking forward to their next album with baited breath. Good work guys. Keep it up.
