An excellent book!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secret Betrayal (Hardcover)
this is one of the better books I've read in a long time. Tolstoy's accounts of the treatment of the Cosssacks and other forced repatriates rings of the history that was Stalin's Russia. A definate must read for anyone interested in WWII or the era of Josef Stalin. It should be in reprint for the quality is that good.

Tragically Underreported Story,
By Steve Dietrich (Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Monica CA, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: The Secret Betrayal (Hardcover)
While folks continue to anguish over the internment of Japanese during WW2 they avoid looking into the real tragic failure of morality at the end of WW2.
The western powers agreed to forcibly return to Stalin millions of refuges and prisoners captured by Germany. Tolstoy documents why this agreement was not necessary and the terribly tragic consequences. Much of the work is based on British files that were closed for 30 years after the war and only became available in the late 70's. From the US, Britain and all of Europe these millions of unfortunates were rounded up and delivered to the Soviets for execution, torture or simply export to the gulags. The story is complicated by the involvement of British and American diplomatic staff that were at the time devoted to the communist cause. Somehow the lessons of this tragedy are not taught in our schools. Also lost in the dust are the heroic actions of US Army troops who simply refused to deliver many of the unfortunates to the Russian butchers. Some simply stopped the trucks in wooded areas, dismounted and turned their backs as most of the unfortunates scheduled for repatriation to the USSR disappeared into the woods.
