5.0 out of 5 stars Shear-Shazar-excellent January 25, 2013
By philz
Format:Audio CD
This album is such a great surprise, a wonderful collaborative effort between Jules Shear and Pal Shazar. What immediately stood out to me is how well crafted the songwriting is. That's not altogether surprising since both Jules and Pal have always been great wordsmiths and songwriters. But this album brings their writing and singing to a new level of craftsmanship through their collaboration. The lyrics, music and singing are constructed so well, and Jules and Pal execute them perfectly. I've been a huge fan since the first Jules & the Polar Bears album. There's an understated quality here that brings out how strong these songs are, both lyrically and musically. Many of the songs address relationships, marriage and commitment from an adult perspective and you get the sense that Jules and Pal are really singing to each other, not just with each other. Musically the songs are filled with interesting changes and great arrangements. Its hard or impossible to tell who wrote what, the compositions are so seamless. If you've ever been a fan of Jules or Pal, you'll want this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jules Shear brilliance once again May 31, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've been a huge fan of Jules Shear since the mid 1970s when he was playing with Jack Tempchin in the Funky Kings (an album that still needs to be reissued on CD!), and of course those glorious Jules and the Polar Bears days. But I've been negligent and haven't heard anything he's recorded in the past decade until I ordered this new album. Immediately impressed. It's clearly apparent that Jules still has "that touch" in penning memorable tunes with hooks and clever lyrics. And he really sounds good paired with his wife, the ex-Slow Children singer Pal Shazar. Maybe their vocals won't be considered traditionally "smooth" for the pop crowd, but I love their quirky style and these songs are all keepers. I can already hear other artists wanting to cover this material. It's that good.

The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is due to the short length (only 32 minutes of music on here) and the fact that the CD comes in a thin paper sleeve without any booklet or liner notes, save the list of musicians and songwriting credits. If the CD had been priced much cheaper I wouldn't complain, but for the price I'd expect a few more songs or some sort of bonus booklet. There's a link to their website where you can get the lyrics, but still ... It's no wonder people are downloading so much nowadays. Unless you give a little something extra to the CD buyers, why bother?

I don't want to end this on a negative note, because this really is a fine album and it's such a joy to hear Jules Shear again. As one of the other reviewers wrote, it's like being in the company of a good friend again. Jules (and Pal) sounds in fine form on this new album and I think his longtime fans will be very pleased with these new songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels like an old friend on a new CD January 28, 2013
By Robin
Format:Audio CD
This long-time Jules fan was a skeptic about a shear/shazar duet but one listen led to more, and it's like an old friend on a different day. They blend wonderfully, and I have to admit Pal's voice is so distinct and crisp; great instrument for storytelling. Especially love Quit Lyin' To Yourself. Great way to start a new year!

2013 welcomes new music from the iconic musical master tunesmith jules shear and multi-talented artisan pal shazar. the record is rich in texture lyrically and stellar musically ~ signature style ala jules and pal. jules shear's musical arrangements are a constant magical awe and delight. the musicians and artist's involved in making this record have capture the "sound and vision" that every shear/shazar song evokes. this album is appreciated from the many loyal fans from way back when.... and continue to be on the edge of our seats for more. thanks jules and pal.

the album's first video "see that star" is why i rate this album 5 stars.

all songs are written by jules shear and pal shazar. the record was produced by julie last and was recorded at the historic recording studio 'cold brook productions' bearsville, ny

5.0 out of 5 stars Jules Shear is Back! January 29, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Jules Shear is my favorite singer-songwriter, who unfortunately has not released a lot of music recently. This record with Pal Shazar (his wife and a great artist in her own right) brings back the emotional, melodic Jules and is one of those records that hits the heart in all the right places. No one writes like this, the words+ melody just seem to go a few layers deeper than the typical songwriter. Highly recommended. In the off chance Jules himself sees this, please release more music!!!
