Not enough soap,

I bought two different touch-free liquid soap dispensers from Amazon in September 2008, the Simplehuman and the Allton SD1020. I used the Simplehuman for a month and then used the Allton the following month (with regular Softsoap brand liquid hand soap I bought from Costco). It gets used about 10 times a day.
The Allton works better and it cost 25% less. The Simplehuman does not give enough soap, and it has to be primed before each use. There is a little button on the top which activates the pump and will prime the unit, but that is hardly touch-free. When using it normally (with the touch-free IR sensor), it gives about a pea size amount of soap. I find myself needing to use it 3 times to get enough soap. (It is set at the highest setting) The Allton has never needed re-priming (after the first time used), and always gives a perfect amount of soap.

Type of soap used is important!,

I purchased two of the simplehuman auto soap dispensers a couple of months ago and think they are great. I read the other reviews from people who didn't like them because they would only dispense a drop or two of soap at a time. The same problem occured with mine when I refilled the units with soap. I used a large bottle of Softsoap hand soap to refill both units several times without any soap dispensing problems. However, I decided to buy another bottle of Softsoap hand soap (aquarium series-clear) just to change the color of the soap. That is when I experienced the same problems that the other people complained about. Only a drop or two of soap would be dispensed, no matter what the dial was set on. I looked closely at both types of Softsoap hand soap and noticed that the newer bottle of soap was thicker in consistency... almost like a jell. I poured out the new soap and refilled the units with the original Softsoap hand soap and the units are once again working great! My conclusion is that the thicker, goopy, jell-like soap just doesn't work well in these units. I also noticed that the newer lot# of Softsoap has slightly less percentage of the antibacterial active ingredient, Triclosan (0.115% vs. 0.15%). Shame on Softsoap! To sum it up, I love the simplehuman soap dispensers. I just need to be careful with the type and consistency of the liquid soap I use in them.

7 months later, my unit died,

When I first bought this unit, I was in love with it, and told all my friends about it. Then I bought the second one, this one the battery couldn't stay in because the screw was not long enough to screw the cover back on. Well, no big deal I went and exchanged for another one. Then 7 months later, the first one I bought died. I put in brand new batteries. That did not solve the problem. I read the other reviews with instructions how to fix this problem. I am sorry, I don't have the patience nor the talent to go through those steps. A soap dispenser that costs $40 should never require users' repairs nor should it break down after 7 months of useage. If I have done this feedback when I first bought it, it would have been a solid 5 star, but not now. Simple Human ... are you reading these reviews?

Priming seems to be the biggest problem with this. Once you get past this, you are all set. If your liquid soap is too thick, just set the setting up to compensate for it. Works great! Plus I love the timer- especially for the grand-kids!

simplehuman Automatic Soap Pump,

This product is great. I have a special needs daughter who has a hand washing fetish. She wasted quarts of hand soap because she had no clue how much to pump out of a standard dispenser. The measured amount that I set to dispense makes her happy and saves me a lot of frustration. Be aware that it will dispense any time something is passed in front of the sensor. This is a problem for the cat who likes to jump in the sink.

Poorly designed product. Expensive for how cheap the materials, construction and design are of this thing. You need to buy just the right kind of soap otherwise it stops up, you need to clean it just so so that it keeps operating, etc. Bottom line, for this price it should be convenient to use and it's not.

The unit leaked all over my wooden counter top. Stopped working completely. I threw it away. Quality control may not be very good for this soap dispenser; maybe if you get a good one you won't have problems. I really wanted it to work, but it didn't. Probably should have pursued replacement through warranty, but I figured it wouldn't be worth the hassle.

Terrible!,

It BARELY dispenses a drop of soap, you have to keep reactivating it over and over to get enough soap which is SLOW. Yes, the manual dispenser button works but that negates the entire point of purchasing this product. I wanted it to be touch free while I am cooking to eliminate spreading bacteria.
I've even diluted the soap--it didn't help. It amazes me that this dispenser is so popular, I also saw it in the Williams-Sonoma catalog and I expect better from them. Buy a disposable soap dispenser at your grocery store and keep some hand sanitizer in the kitchen. Pocket the extra $35.

I love this exact Automatic Soap Pump Dispenser with Touch-Free IR Sensor. I have purchased I think every one SimpleHuman makes and this is the only one that dispenses enough soap out. I will probably buy a couple more.
