Works great as a diaper bin too, May 29, 2005
I have this in white - the retail price on that is $18.99, which is cheaper than this one. I'm using it as a diaper bin - it works so much better than any of the products made specifically for that, like the diaper champ or diaper genie. Why?
* You can have both hands free because of the foot lever opener.
* It's much easier to use, because you can just throw the diapers and
wipes in as you're cleaning. No special contraptions to fend with.
* It smells less than the Diaper Champ (and probably most others too)
because the lid seals tightly when it's closed.
* It can use standard plastic grocery bags that you get for free at
checkout (I don't have to wonder whether to get paper or plastic any
more!)
* It looks a lot better than the other bins.
* You can use it when the baby's out of diapers.

Good, small garbage can, July 2, 2005
This is a small garbage can that has a removable liner. It also fits the plastic bags you get at all the stores now, but it is small. It came well packaged and quickly. Cooking.com is a good website and excellent company. I've gotten a few things from them and never have a problem.

GREAT for kitchen compost, April 27, 2008
Our solid waste service now takes kitchen compost and yard waste from a single large bin, twice a month. Our house is some distance from the pickup location on the paved road. So I cast about looking for something that would be easy to clean, attractive and large enough to hold a few days' worth of kitchen scraps before we carry them out to the roadside bin for later pickup.
This 3 gallon simplehuman can seems to do the trick. We keep it just outside the kitchen door and dump our compostable kitchen scraps at the end of each meal. The stainless steel will handle the weather. The pedal operated flip up lid makes it easy to use. The lid closes securely to keep out the rain, neighborhood pets and thus far our resident racoons. The removable black plastic liner is a cinch to clean. There are also biodegradable bags that fit this can, which you can fill and then put directly into a compost bin -- they're apparently made with cornstarch and break down as the composting progresses.
One quibble -- some of the simplehuman cans have a pneumatic or spring loaded mechanism that lowers the top slowly when you take your foot off the pedal. On this one, the top just clunks shut.
All in all, it's definitely worth the fifty bucks. Good design, well made, serves our purpose as well as anything we've seen.
