Unlike many of the other reviewers here, I bought this item exclusively to use outside the sink. It has performed great so far. I like the attractive design (simple metal frame and the inset draining piece, for example), and relatively compact footprint. We use the dishwasher for most items but wash our pots/pans and miscellaneous items by hand, so we did not need a large dish rack. I can also appreciate that when the plastic pieces inevitably start getting a little dingy over time, I can just throw them into the dishwasher
The price was also reasonable. I don't expect to pay a lot for a dish rack, but I am happy to pay a little bit more for one that has some nice touches cosmetically and functionally. I felt this price point (<30) was the sweet spot for me. If I were to nitpick just a little bit, it would be that the slope could be just a little bit greater to allow water to flow more easily towards the sink. I may end up getting a couple small clear pieces of plastic to prop up two of the legs if it really ends up being bothersome.

Who'd have dreamed that something like a dish rack could make me so happy...
After many years of using an inexpensive plastic rack that more or less balances on the edge of the sink and the divider between the twin sinks, I finally splurged. I am so pleased with this rack. I've removed the spout since I will be using it in the sink rather than on the counter. The rack fits beautifully in the sink and now rests on the bottom rather than the edges like my old one did. It's basically out of sight when empty, but looks great. If I need to use it on the counter, I can easily insert the spout and direct the runoff into the sink. Comes with a five year guarantee. Heck, I've had my plastic one that long and fully expect this one to outlast me. Sometimes the little things do make a difference.

Fits in the sink nice but what I really wanted was all stainless steel. The whole bottom(drip tray) is plastic with 1/2" slats meaning harder to clean. I was trying to avoid this. Can't use without the plastic "drip tray" cause there would be no bottom, just a hole. Oh well back to cleaning the dish drainer!

This item is described as "Made of rust-proof, extra sturdy stainless steel wire".
After I received it, I found that it is partly stainless steel, but the entire bottom on which the dishes sit is made of plastic, as is the utensil holder. The design of the plastic dish holder doesn't seem too easy to keep clean. If you are looking for an all stainless steel dish rack, you may want to keep looking.

My old counter-top dish rack was occupying way too much real estate in my little kitchen, so I set about researching in-sink units online. I found several that were the right size, but the Simplehuman KT1130 stood out as the clear winner, due to its quality (stainless-steel construction) and features (optimum use of space, large utensil holder).
When the unit arrived, I was not disappointed. It's "built like a tank" and fits perfectly in one basin of my dual-basin sink. Its four feet, each with a clear rubber sleeve, hold it firmly in place without marring the surface of my sink (which is also stainless steel). The unit comes with a metal drain spout that attaches to the bottom, but you can leave that off, as I did, if it sticks out too far to allow the unit to sit properly in the basin. It's not often that you find EXACTLY what you need! If your requirements are similar to mine, you should definitely look into this unit - check out the details at [...], then buy it on Amazon!

I wanted to like it. It looks nice. The drain spout plastic guide broke, making the metal spout useless; water all over the counter. Then I found that it's impossible to clean. Mold collects in the bottom, and I can't even fit a toothbrush in there to clean it. I contacted the company, not for replacement, but to redesign it. Going back to Rubbermaid; cheap and cheerful.

Great design except a pain to clean up,

I would give it 3.5 if I could. It's a nice design, but the bottom plastic piece is a hassle to clean if you do not have a dishwasher.
There is a central gutter that is not easily accessible without some sort of special tool/brush, thus mold readily accumulates. It cleans up reasonably well in the dishwasher. I emailed Simplehuman, and they said you could soak it in baking soda. They were very generous and offered to replace the tray, so I give them the extra half star for customer service. I live in an apartment, and it does fit quite well on the counter. On the other hand, I cook a lot and I live with my lady-friend so we had to get an auxiliary draining rack (a baker's cooling rack actually). I would say this is idea for a couple that eats out a lot or a single person.

"This is a great & cute dish rack to keep in-sink but not out of the sink. I was disappointed because the first time I used it, it had water all around the feet. If you make sure to carefully place items in the center, then it works. Since the tray doesnt cover the rack, water drips around it. I need to wipe out water under the feet every time I use it. I noticed this is not the case in other models of simple human. Hope they fix it. For now, I dont want to pay for return's, so keeping it."

just got this after quite a search for such a basic item. love it!! removable bottom keeps moisture off counter, spout drains directly into sink if you want it to. spout is easily removed so rack can fit into sink if you want it off counter. holds 13 large plates or other stuff. removable silverware holder also slides from one end to the other to accomodate configuration. i use it primarily for washing my little coffee pot in the morning b4 i leave for work, large knives, etc. also, even though it doesn't have those devices for holding glassware, the plate indentations make it easy to tip them for drying. very happy with this item.

Drainer has positives and negatives.,

This review is from: simplehuman Compact Dishrack, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This drainer is great for channeling the residual dishwater that drips off of the dishes into the sink. I purchased the drainer mainly for this feature, and I am happy with that. What I did not think through is that I need this drainer for my countertop, not for inside my sink, so any water that splashes off of the dishes and outside the metal "cage" on the sides ends up on the countertop. So it's a good thing I saved the drain tray from my old standard dish drainer to put underneath this new one. The next size and price up of the Simplehuman dish drainer would have taken care of this issue as it has solid sides, but I could not order it because that drainer would have been too large for my small counterspace. Alternatively, I could put a dish towel under the drainer to catch the side splashes, but part of my point was to eliminate visual clutter on my countertop.
My other disappointment is that I did not realize that the bottom surface of this dish drainer, whereupon the dishes rest, is not made for dishes that do not fit perfectly in the "plate slots" that are molded into the design. So things like wooden cutting boards or even bowls do not rest upright or up at an angle because they do not fit into those slots. They slide along the smooth bottom with nothing to stop them except the sides of the dish drainer. So you have to be extra careful when you stack things or they will just want to slide right down and possibly break. I may have to put some rubber-coated shelf liner in the bottom of the drainer so that my dishes will stop sliding but so water will still drain through. If you want this dish drainer for an "in-sink" drainer, then I think it would be great. But you will still have to take extra care when stacking things so they don't want to just slide down and break. I like the look of the drainer. I also like that the silverware tray and the bottom drain tray are both dishwasher safe for easier cleaning. But for the price, I think Simplehuman could stand to improve this dish drainer. |
