Great rack!,
This review is from: simplehuman KT1031 Flip-Top Dishrack (Kitchen)
I started using the dish rack for the first time today, so my review might be a bit premature. It's does a excellent job of running the water out and everything is nicely organized. They've thought of the most important things and have a place for them in this dish rack.
At first, I was afraid the utensil holder would drip all over the counter, but there is only one hole at the bottom and it is clevery made to drip right onto the pan. Make sure you measure and have enough space for this baby. It's pretty big, especially when you expand the top rack. My rack fits exactly on my counter. I am only able to use one of the two cup holders because of the lack of space on my counter. I am also unable to use the wine glass holders. I bought my dish rack from BBB with the 20% off coupon.

Bad Drain Design!,

I bought this dish rack/drainer because I got tired of trying to keep the hard water scum off of my Rubbermaid rubber version. The dish rack has great features like the knife tray and wine glass holders. The drainer however is a different story. It does not work with a "lip out" type of sink. Water drains everywhere except the sink. I didn't notice it when I first used it and let water drip on to the floor which damaged my hard wood floor. I'm buying the rubbermaid clear drainmat to see if this helps. I'll keep you posted.

Not so great for self-rimming/drop-in sinks,
This review is from: simplehuman KT1031 Flip-Top Dishrack (Kitchen)
This dishrack is really smart in terms of design, with all the detachable extra features like cup holders, the utensil holder, knife block and wine glass holder. However, there is one engineering point that is missed for those of us who have drop-in/self-rimming sinks (those with a lip that goes about 3/4" above the counter). I have such a sink, and I found that I can't get the feet on the bottom of the drainboard of the rack to rise high enough to create the proper angle for draining water into the sink. If I rest the silver water spout on the edge of the sink, the whole rack sits level to the counter and does not allow the water to run to anywhere, except over the sides when it accumulates. The back legs don't raise the end of the drainboard high enough.
Too bad for me that I have to use a separate drainboard because I don't have an undermount sink. I was excited to use this drainboard that was included, especially since it costs a bundle all together, but it's proven useless because it's too short. One more point, when you flip the rack out to the side to accommodate more items, water will drip on the counter if you actually place things on the flipped out rack. This is where another improvement could be made to the drainboard, so that it catches the water wherever it goes. That's if you decide to put the flip out part away from the sink like I did. I like to have utensils drip right in to the sink.

Cut-away side is useless.,

This dish rack is nice to look at but the cutaway sides mean that nothing can be leaned up against the sides. We put rinsed out bottles and cans(for recycling) in our rack, so it gets quite full and with the cut-away sides, it means quite a bit of space is barely usable.
The slotted knife holder is a nice feature.

I've been using this for at least half a year and though I love the roominess (we have no dishwasher so all dishes are handwashed), there are a few things I would change:
- the glass holders are outside of the drip-catch tray so I hardly ever use them since I have to wipe up the spilling water (why not make the drip tray just a few inches wider???) - little accommodation for bowls without flanged lips (they won't fit in the tight grooves for flat plates so you have to pile them carefully on the side) - I have a sink with an external "lip" and though it's low enough for the tray to sit and drain properly, the water always runs down the side of the sink leaving hard mineral water buildup that I am always trying to scrub out (vinegar is the only help) - if I could have the tray closer to the sink, it should drip straight into the sink from the tray drip spout instead of running down the sink's side as well But in all, if it weren't for the glass holders being out of the tray range, I would give this 5 stars because it's a lot better than the plastic crap I've used in the past.

Mostly a good design, but doesn't work on a sink with a lip,

The design of the dish rack is excellent. It's very modular, so you can make it work in the space you have. The drip tray, however, does not work well if you have a sink with a lip. It just doesn't have enough height to make it over the lip and you will end up with water all over your counter. The simplehuman Stainless Steel Dish Rack takes care of this problem since it is taller and has extension feet if you need even more height.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this item because I thought it was over-priced, however; the dishrack is well worth it. The company stands behind their lifetime warranty. They easily replaced a part that I accidently broke. This dishrack is spacious and it holds alot of dishes. I would recommend this item to anyone.

This rack rocks!,

I have had this rack for over 2 years now and I love it! Everything about it is well thought out. Some people reviewed that their racks didn't drain well, but I have never had a problem with mine. There are feet underneath the rack, at the back, that need to be popped out, so maybe they didn't do that. I highly recommend it and am buying one for a friend right now.

I fell in love with this dish rack a year ago when I was searching the web for stainless steel dish racks. The price, however, was prohibitive. A few weeks ago I received the rack as a gift and am quite happy with it. It's larger than it appears to be in photos, though, and it doesn't fit well into the space I currently have for it. Those negatives out of the way, this rack looks attractive on the counter, cleans up easily, and provides lots of options for how to use it. The utensil drainer is very sturdy and exceptionally large. It can be installed on the outside of the dish rack so it doesn't take up precious dish space, and it still drains on to the drainboard instead of on to the counter or the floor. The wine rack and cup rack both seem like good space savers, but I don't currently have room to use them. All in all a very well-constructed dish rack that adds some elegance to a rather in-elegant function.

After researching and reading all kinds of reviews on this, I finally took the plunge and made the purchase. I was a bit concerned about the comments regarding draining over a "lip out" sink, as mine is about 1/4" over. In anticipation of this, I purchased some rubber stoppers to give it some height to alleviate this issue. How silly that was! I'm not sure if the manufacturer saw and made changes based on those comments, but the base has height adjustment flaps for this, and it fits perfectly and drains wonderfully into my sink. The outside hanging position utensil tray drainage was another concern of mine, and that has been resolved (or not) as well.
So many features and great size make this the perfect dish drain in our house! |
