4.0 out of 5 stars easy solution to holding the inner bag
i used to have the same problem of holding the bag on the inner can: i couldn't find a rubber band big enough.

then, i had a moment of trash-can inspiration: i just tied a string to each end of a sturdy rubber band and adjusted the length so i could stretch the string / rubber band loop around the top of the inner can. i tied another small piece of string from...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but it's got issues.
Overall, I'm happy with this. It's beautiful (which is something to say about a trash can) and it keeps the smells in and the ants out, but it has two problems. Although the inner can is removable so you can put the bag on the can and then in the casing, there is no band to keep the bag in place so when you put the can in the casing, the bag tends to get pushed off the...

4.0 out of 5 stars easy solution to holding the inner bag, July 23, 2004
This review is from: simplehuman Rectangular Step Trash Can, Fingerprint-Proof Brushed Stainless Steel, 50 Liters /13 Gallons (Kitchen)
i used to have the same problem of holding the bag on the inner can: i couldn't find a rubber band big enough.

then, i had a moment of trash-can inspiration: i just tied a string to each end of a sturdy rubber band and adjusted the length so i could stretch the string / rubber band loop around the top of the inner can. i tied another small piece of string from the loop to the edge of the inner can's handle so it'd stay nearby while emptying it.

this works very well for me.

Overall, I'm happy with this. It's beautiful (which is something to say about a trash can) and it keeps the smells in and the ants out, but it has two problems. Although the inner can is removable so you can put the bag on the can and then in the casing, there is no band to keep the bag in place so when you put the can in the casing, the bag tends to get pushed off the can. I end up having to shove it back in around the can which is a pain. If I can find a rubber band big enough, I'll use that, but in the meantime, it's somewhat frustrating when changing the bag. The only other issue is the little piece which can be used to hold the top open is a tiny piece of metal which sits on the end of a rod - no screw or cap to hold it in place - which means it routinely falls off. For this much money, I would have liked a bit more functionality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an OUTSTANDING trashcan!!!!, November 11, 2005
By
brandyng (Kennesaw, GA USA) - See all my reviews
I purchased this trashcan from Lowe's (for the same price) one night after going over it in my mind for MONTHS why one would EVER spend so money on a trashcan. Well, let me tell you: It's worth every single penny. The size, quality, color, mechanics of it (the lid slowly closes once you take your foot off of the pedal) are great, and it's easy for me to clean. I'd buy this thing all over again- but much, much sooner than it took me this time. lol I highly recommend it!

By the way, you don't have to buy the trashbags made by simplehuman for this size trashcan. You can just use tall kitchen trashbags.

This product is fairly expensive, but has been very well thought out from a design and production standpoint. I have no problem recommending it wholeheartedly to others. I have had it now for several months, and report no ill effects from the rough treatment given it by my two children. Don't fall for the special bags they try to sell you, ordinary tall kitchen bags work just fine (quick ties work better than draw string bags, which is good because they are cheaper). Simply pull one through the back opening in the insert and stretch over the rim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally.. a can we love!, September 30, 2004
This review is from: simplehuman Rectangular Step Trash Can, Fingerprint-Proof Brushed Stainless Steel, 50 Liters /13 Gallons (Kitchen)
We have been through so many brands that never lived up to the features we needed. This can truly has it all and for a good price!! It is sturdy when you press on the pedal. It is quiet when the lids comes down. It holds a lot and is easy to get the bag out. We had problems with the tall round cans but not with this one. Hefty has come out with some gripper bags that are a perfect compliment to this can. Highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Trash Bag Solution for Fantastic Trash Can, July 19, 2008
By
We've had this can for over two years with no issues at all. (We have teenagers, so average about one and a half full trash bag a day.) Very sturdy, very easy to keep clean, takes up the least space for the amount of trash it holds. Nothing has bent or broken.

We use Hefty Ultraflex tall kitchen bags. The drawstring is just the right circumference to stretch around the top rim, holding the bag in place regardless of what we toss in. No rubberbands required. (The Glad-brand bags don't have quite as much stretch, so the drawstring would occasionally break.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Large rubber bands for securing bags are available, December 15, 2005
By
This review is from: simplehuman Rectangular Step Trash Can, Fingerprint-Proof Brushed Stainless Steel, 50 Liters /13 Gallons (Kitchen)
In regards to the concerns addressed by several reviewers about finding rubberbands that are large enough to hold the bag in place, just go to the Office Depot website and search for "Alliance Elastic Wastebasket Bands" or the Staples website and search for "Alliance Big Bands". I'm not sure if they are available in stores, but at least they are available. Hope this helps.

The brushed stainless steel looks sleek and modern and this particular shape can utilize regular bags (I use a generic 13 gallon drawstring bag) as well as the expensive liners put out by the brand. The lid is easily activated by a step and locks in the open position (a light push downward releases it). Unlike some other step trash cans, this one is completely noiseless. The liner is also an added bonus. As if these things weren't enough, it also comes equipped with a 10-year manufacturer's warrantee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it!, July 15, 2004
This review is from: simplehuman Rectangular Step Trash Can, Fingerprint-Proof Brushed Stainless Steel, 50 Liters /13 Gallons (Kitchen)
We were looking for a trash can that looked good sitting out in our kitchen and that our little one year could not reach her hand into. The simplehuman step-on rectangular 10 gallon can is perfect! You do see all the little fingerprints but at least I don't see a little fist full of garbage. It is also nice to have the step-on lever to open the lid when your arms are full of baby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kiddo & pet friendly, December 15, 2009
By
KYP (Lakewood, CO United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
We had to get a new trashcan because my son was wanting to open/close the one we had, and it was too light that we could see him one day knocking it over.

I couldn't justify spending this kind of money on a trashcan, but now I'm eating my words.

It's super sturdy! I mean there is NO way that my kid can knock it over.
The lid is sealed within the casing so there is NO way he can pry that sucker open (until he figures out how to use the stepper)

NO FINGERPRINTS!!! it's 1 less thing I have to clean. Seriously, NO FINGERPRINTS. My kiddo's had yogurt, greasy hands, nothing. And if food gets stuck on the trashcan - all we need is a wet papertowel. If we need the lid open all the time, it's just a slight push of a button. The lid also closes on it's own very gently, so there isn't that "bang" when we close the lid on other trashcans.

Why 10gallon vs. 13.
I had originally wanted a 13 gallon but (1) it's huge, (2) it's a lot pricier (3) we barely filled a bag of trash in 5 days, so if there was leftovers/food in the trash - it'd tend to stink (4) I didn't think we could use our current 13g trash bags and I didn't want to shell out for the SimpleHuman trash bags

Am I glad we got the 10gallon?
YES! We empty out the trash more often which is nicer (we are 2 adults, 1 child + 2 dogs) about every 3-4 days
It fits my bulk store 13g trash bags (even better)
It's GORGEOUS!! It adds a touch of class (I know weird b/c it's a trash can) to our kitchen because it matches the appliances
My kiddo can't knock it over - my dog hasn't peed on it (he used to on the old one - maybe he's a fickle home decorator - our old trash can was plastic and beige - eww)
I can see that we will use this for a long time. It's taken a few beatings (my son sometimes mistakes it for a drum).
For the pricepoint - you won't find a trashcan that's prettier and designed better (I feel like we've upgraded from a hoopty to a luxury car)
