I worried it was too big before we got it (we have a small kitchen), but considering we get both trash and recycling stowed away. For a small family it's a good size -- don't have to go out with the trash every day, but it's not so big that it gets gross before we do. When having a party or other occasion for generating more trash you can take out the smaller bins and just use it as one ~15 gallon trash can (that's a lot of trash).
Don't underestimate how convenient it is to have recycling, too.
My favorite feature though is how stable it is. There's never a worry that it'll tip over (or barely move, even) when you step on it to open it up. Also, the lid closes quietly and it's easy to keep clean.
Only downsize is that you really want to use the SimpleHuman trash bags ("size G") which are about twice as much per bag as a regular kitchen trash bag. For our use we calculated it to not be too much a year; but you might think differently (but then maybe you should reconsider looking at an expensive trash can in the first place!). The simplehuman bags also seems to only come in small 20 bag packs.
*Update 2 years later* - Yup, still love this thing (however much love a trashcan can get, anyway). It has a few dents from stuff falling on the lid from our stairs above the kitchen, but several years and hundreds of trash bags later it still works great and looks good.
Everything about it is great.
If I were being extremely picky, the only (tiny) thing I would point out is that is that if you step on the lever and quickly remove your foot, the lid kind of slams shut--it does not close slowly. I'm sure this is by design--close the lid quickly to keep odors inside. You have to hold the lever down for a few seconds and then let go, in order for the lid to slowly close (which is what I'm used to with my other Simple Human trashcans). But now that I've learned this, it doesn't bother me. When I go to toss something in really quickly, I simply release my foot from the lever slowly, rather than completely remove my foot. NOTE: I've read other reviews on here stating that the foot mechanism is faulty but every one of these cans I've ever tested behaves in the manner described above--you have to step on the lever, open the lid all the way, and wait maybe 1 or 2 seconds before letting go. If you do that, the lid closes slowly every time. Yes, my older model Simple Human trashcans slowly close the lid no matter how quickly or slowly you open the lid. I think the fact that this lid sort of "slams" closed if you step on the lever quickly and then remove your foot, is by design (but I don't build them!).
This trashcan looks great. As far as the reviews saying that theirs arrived damaged, mine was fine. Someone said Amazon added a second box but mine arrived in two Simple Human boxes. The outer box was the thick type of brown cardboard (not the crappy, soft kind cheap items often arrive in). Inside of this box, there were plenty of air bags surrounding another white Simple Human box containing the actual trashcan.Read more ›
Having said that, the trash can we received had a problem with the lid--the left hindge could not be tightly bolted to the lid due to loose plastic holes on the lid. I called the customer service at Simplehuman (BTW, the phone call only took about 5 min instead of 30 mininuts which seems to be the standard nowadays). The cutomer rep said she will send a replacement lid in 5 to 7 working days. I received the replacement lid the day after the phone call--How cool is that?
Well, the experience with the Simplehuman customer service fortified our liking of this trash can. We now know that we are going to have this super cool trash can for at least 10 years. My suggestion? Buy one while they still make them.

This is a well built beautiful trash can. However, I regret the purchase. I was under the impression, from feedback in the q&a section, that multiple buckets were included. Read morePublished 3 months ago by Amazon Customer
