4.0 out of 5 stars Needs Simple Modification
There is no doubt that this is a product with superb design (the lid is even contoured for lifting by hand) and build quality. However, the normal operation of stepping on the foot pedal does jerk the lid open with a force that makes the whole can lurch backward. Do this a few times and the can works it's way against a wall or kitchen cabinet and can no longer open fully...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too small for daily kitchen scraps & compostables
I bought this garbage can to take the place of my under sink Norpro Ceramic Compost Keeper, White which at 1 gallon I found was big enough for the daily scraps but not for adding paper towels etc. And since it was under the sink, I found folks used the garbage pail when it should have gone into the compost bucket. So I went looking for a bigger can that would have a lid...

There is no doubt that this is a product with superb design (the lid is even contoured for lifting by hand) and build quality. However, the normal operation of stepping on the foot pedal does jerk the lid open with a force that makes the whole can lurch backward. Do this a few times and the can works it's way against a wall or kitchen cabinet and can no longer open fully because the lid needs clearance from behind. Simply moving it forward and away from obstruction allows it to work again. I rated this 4 stars because it's an annoying characteristic that won't go away. The simple extension of plastic into a bumper would keep the hinged end away from walls and cabinets and fix this problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks nice and hides smell, September 30, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Though somewhat more expensive than other trash cans, this one is worth the extra cost. It has hooks that hold old grocery store bags in place so the liner never sags. We use the can to hold used cat litter and cat waste. The lid seals well enough that the smell does not escape the can as long as the lid is closed. If I were buying another trash can, this model would be at the top of the list.

5.0 out of 5 stars $29.99 from simple human, October 19, 2007
FIVE STARS for yet another tactile terrific step can design from simplehuman. I use one in the kitchen for dirty dish towels and another in my room for garments that need to be handwashed. I got the idea for using a step can as hampers from diaper pails.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect bathroom trashcan, November 25, 2009
By
I love simplehuman products. I have 3 of their trashcans (this one included), their plastic bag recycling doohickey and the amazing bamboo/steel dishrack.

I had some pathetic trashcan in my bathroom that I got at Target cause it was cheap and every time I pressed the pedal, it banged into my toilet and was just a PITA.

I was wandering the aisles of Bed, Bath and Beyond one day and then I saw this narrow miracle. It is absolutely the perfect size for the bathroom, uses plastic grocery bags (which I store in the other aforementioned Simplehuman product) and looks fantastic always (thanks to the Simplehuman fingerprint-proof coating).

If you also have a small bathroom (damn Los Angeles real estate), this is the perfect trashcan and built with the same quality typical of all Simplehuman products.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but could be improved, October 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I like the all white can. This can fits 3 gallon trash bags. It is only about shin high and the improvement I would suggest is the possibility to lift the lid and have it stay up. This was too small for me to use in the kitchen. Would be good for other uses.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more having to buy trash bags..., March 15, 2008
It's a great size for my small kitchen and I love that I don't need to buy trash bags; I just save my plastic bags from when I go grocery shopping. A great product, a great buy! A+++

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps the little doggies out, May 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'm a sucker for thoughtful design. The functionality of this little guy is really well-designed, even if the outward appearance is only so-so.

PROS
The rectangular design is a huge space saver and I can fit it next to any wall, cabinet, desk, whatever.
The little handles on the inside of the black insert that hold the plastic bag in place (any standard-sized grocery bag) to keep it from falling down when you toss heavy objects in.
The step mechanism works smoothly and doesn't feel cheap.
The lid has a little lip that makes manually opening it with your hand easy.
Brushed metal material minimizes gross markings.
Keeps small animals from getting in or knocking it over. Can't say for larger ones.

CONS
Wish the lid matched the body, but really that's all I can say.

If you have kids or small animals, I highly recommend this! My little dog used to pull kleenex and all sorts of items out of our trash cans, and I haven't had to deal with that once since I bought these!

5.0 out of 5 stars We really like our new Compost Bin, May 20, 2008
This review is from: simplehuman Step Trash Cans, Profile, 2-3/5 Gallons, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
We were looking for an indoor bin to hold our compost until we take it outside. Something the right size, and with a decent style to it. This perfectly matches our kettle and looks really good sitting on our counter.

The step/lid works well on it and we really like that the inner liner pulls out for easy emptying and cleaning.

You might prefer something with a totally sealed lid for your scrap holder, but, we'll try to get along with this because we like the look.
