I'd much rather Kelly have put time into a new pop album rather than a Christmas album. I enjoy Christmas as a holiday... but... I do not enjoy Christmas songs or especially albums. Christmas songs are generally too cheesy and are a specialty product rather than a real song. I own several xmas albums featuring favorite artists but really, honestly, never listen to them... because the songs just do not resonate for me. Nothing makes me want to play them. I hope Kelly is not morphing into an artist I am not going to like any longer... I like her pop work... I don't like her forays into country music and stuff like this.
Kelly has NEVER been exclusive to one genre, so I don't get the surprise. This is a holiday Album not a "stray" away from the norm. She has always been part adult contemporary, part top 40 pop, part country, and part rock. This album will probably showcase Kelly as a more traditional vocalist with extended notes, clear phrasing, and clear melodies. For the last couple of years, Kelly has been mainly singing with the throaty rasp vocals like alanis, melissa etheridge, janis joplin, pink etc. but she started singing opera as a child and her first official album was mostly pop/r&b. Kelly has pretty much ignored the adult contemporary/r&b fans with her last couple of albums, but most of her idol fans fell in love with her more soulful/clear voice. This is an opportunity for her to showcase that style once again.
I agree, Tellsthetruth. Kelly never defined herself to one genre. Even on her first album Thankful, there were bluesy songs, there were pop songs and there were country songs. I love Kelly's singing and think her evolution as an artist is showing in her lyrics. What's funny is I'm Jewish and I love Christmas music. To me, Christmas music has always been about the feeling and the style. I hope Kelly includes her version of "Oh Holy Night" because the way she brought it to life really is amazing. She will be making another studio album, due out in the beginning of 2014 actually.
I for one am excited, her version of ill be home for christmas is AWESOME, and i hope it is included on this album, those notes at around 1:55 until the end are soooooooo good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWjuwS4vf70
J. WALSH - I don't understand...you don't enjoy Christmas songs, especially albums, yet you own several of them? I'm glad you like Kelly, and I hope I don't offend you, but I'm wondering why you're complaining about Kelly's choice of album (which hasn't even come out yet) when you already know you don't enjoy the genre.
Personally, I love Christmas music (when it's done well). There are certainly a lot of cheesy Holiday records that are thrown together quickly by an artist, but a well-crafted Christmas album can be something I listen to year round. I loved Amy Grant's first and second Christmas albums (she could have stopped after that in my opinion!) and Shawn Colvin's Christmas album is a beauty. I'm a big Kelly fan so I'm hopeful that this will be music that is well made and not a cheesy, Karaoke rip-off. Don't let me down, Kel! :)
I love how the person who started this thread, about how this will be a boring Christmas album, is a person who does not enjoy Christmas songs or "especially albums". But yet, somehow, he owns several???
Thanks for wasting everyone's time, buddy! Godbless the Internet!
Don't buy it. Simple. Some of us LOVE Christmas albums. I feel like Kelly would, too, and that's why she's going for this. And so WHAT if she moves towards country? She's repeatedly expressed a fondness for country (and blues). I'd rather she be happy doing what she loves than forcing herself to refrain from pursuing it because a few selfish little brats doooooon't liiiiiiike iiiiit.
What did you listen to? I can't tell if you loved the CD or not, but I know I loved it and so did most of the people in my office that were subjected to it three times today. First White Christmas, and Baby It's Cold Outside were better than the originals. The fact that she can sing any genre is amazing not a detriment. I would say she in P!nk have similar vocal abilities, but they are both stellar. I have loved everything she has done, and you will never see this talent lip sync. Variety is the spice of life, and this CD is bound to be a record breaker
Pink doesn't have the higher range that Kelly does. ie: The chorus to Pinks "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" was bloody awful. Sure Pink hit the notes with help from an auto tuner (or multiple takes) but the result was painful for me. Still, surprised how popular the song was.
