invaluable resource for learning Brazilian percussion, September 7, 2006
This review is from: The spirit of percussion (Master classes)
This excellent book has 22 chapters. Some are on specific Brazilian percussion instruments and some are on Airto's philosophy of life and music. They are as follows:
Airto [bio]
Listening
Love & Respect
Finding Your Place in the Music
Colors
Choosing, Preparing and Tuning
How to Hold Your Instruments
Tambourine [pandeiro]
Berimbau
Caxixi
Cuica
Surdo
Triangle
Batucada [samba ensemble]
Drumset
The Table
Setups
Creative Percussion
Energy
Soul
Positive Attitude
Drugs {a hindrance] and Inspiration
The book is richly illustrated - I count about 45 photos, including 8 just of Airto's famous table set-up of hand percussion! If you've ever had the privilege of seeing him live (like I did) and wondered how everything fit on his special "table," here is your chance to learn - 8 photos laying it all out for you. It's amazing that Airto would share this specialized information.
As well as photo illustrations of instruments in use, there are dozens of scores of musical patterns - too many for me to count!
You may not ever sound like Airto, but this book (and lots of practice!) will help you get in the ballpark. It is an invaluable resource for anyone learning Brazilian percussion, and can be used from beginners to professionals.
