Review
Collection of short stories by Ivan Turgenev published in Russian as Zapiski okhotnika in 1852; additional stories were included in the 1870s. The collection has also been translated as Sketches from a Hunter's Album and A Sportsman's Notebook. The stories concern life in rural Russia, in particular the relationship between landowners and their serfs. Some sketches focus on the landowners or on episodes, drawn from Turgenev's experience, of the manorial, serf-owning Russian gentry. Far more significant are the sketches that tell of Turgenev's encounters with peasants during his hunting trips. His portraits suggest that, though the peasants may be "children of nature" who seek the freedom offered by the beauty of their surroundings, they are always circumscribed by their serfdom. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Great Insight,

When I was introduced to this great book, I had only read Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons." I checked out a copy from the California State University, Long Beach library and began reading it immediately. I was enthralled throughout my reading by Turgenev's powerful descriptions of not only the serfs and their masters but also the nature surrounding them. It is an excellent book, and I always think of the places depicted in the book and the people.
