I am using this for those students in my class who breeze through the Language Arts spelling words every week. I give a pretest on Monday. If a student misses fewer than five out of twenty of the spelling words, they study these vocabulary words instead. The book is organized wonderfully well, so that you can assign one root for each week. The author gives you a list of ten words that utilize the root and their meanings (for visual learners), a page with the words and meanings mixed up so they have to cut it apart and match them up again (for your tactile learners) and then a multiple choice test where the students must determine which word belongs in the sentence (very difficult - student needs to apply their knowledge and comprehension of the word to determine in which sentence the word would work.) I highly recommend this book for grades 4 through 6 - it is a challenge for my highest students! Mainstream students in higher grades (7 -8) would still find it challenging.

I am a middle school English teacher and have been using GREEK AND LATIN ROOTS by Trisha Callela as the only vocabulary text in my classroom for four years now. The students love it, and so do I. Other teachers who have observed me using the activites in this book, have asked me for information about them, and then adopted them in their classrooms. The activities, particularly the "Word Readaround," are favorites with my students. I now use all three of her books--GREEK AND LATIN ROOTS, MORE GREEK AND LATIN ROOTS, and PREFIXES AND SUFFIXES. I cannot recommend all three highly enough.

This is an ok resource. One big thing it lacks is any etymology: there was no indication on the page whether the roots were Latin or Greek, or how they might have been used in their language of origin. Arguably, etymology isn't strictly necessary for standardized tests but is useful in divining meaning, and adds interest to the subject matter--which may help fix information in long-term memory. This is a tool for rote memorization.

I bought this for a home school application but won't be using it.

Comes nicely formatted for each week and I like the review activities and games for review. I haven't implemented it yet, but will for the second semester. I did ask a student whose teacher used it last year if she found it helpful and she said it was the most helpful thing in the class for vocabulary. Since she was an English Learner, I'll definitely try it in my class.
The only suggestion for use is to copy the pages into smaller sizes so you can fit four copies on a page and cut the sections. This way, students can staple them into their notebooks and it saves paper and space.

I really like this book, but I bought it as a 5th grade teacher and only about half of the words are words that the average 5th grader would ever use. I think it might be better for 6th and up.

This organizes the teaching of Latin and Greek roots that the common core curriculum starts requiring in third grade. I did modify some of the requirements to differentiate for lower readers.

"Greek and Latin Roots" by author Trisha Callella is one of my preferred teaching tools.

I use it both for my homeschooling, and also for my students of English as a Second Language.

The book is well structured and simple enough that Elementary Age Children can readily use it.

The vocabulary quizzes are very useful for reinforcement.

This is a systematic way to teach roots and affixes to middle schoolers. I use it successfully with my English language learners at level 4.

I use it every week. I make a class set of the matching and pass them out as students enter so they can practice as a warm-up. They love it!
