My daughter suffers from terrible acne on her upper back. She'd been using this Neutrogena body scrub for it and, according to her, it worked okay... but not the 'bee's knees' so-to-speak. She was having to shower twice-a-day with it... in the morning before school, and when she got home from school.

However, one day we were in CVS to buy another bottle of this Neutrogena Body Clear Scrub, but they were out of it. She HAD to have something, so we substituted CVS's own brand of this body-clear scrub. And, boy-oh-boy, did she find a new treasure! For whatever reason, the CVS-brand cleared her skin all-the-way in no time and she's been using it ever since-- some three years now... and only has to shower once-a-day now as well.

If CVS is ever out of their own brand, we have to get something, so have substituted with the Neutrogena again... but it never works for her as well as the CVS-brand. I've learned my lesson, and now stock-up on the CVS-brand, especially when they have it on-sale.

(As an aside, she also suffers from facial acne. We were ready to try the ProActive stuff, but a friend of mine suggested we first try the 'Beyond Belief' brand of acne products over at Sally's Beauty Supply. We did and, again, what a treasure! She uses all of the 'Beyond Belief ABH' products: Foaming Cleanser, Clay Mask, Toner, Spot Treatment, Oil-Free Moisturizer, Repair Treatment, Repair Serum, and Exfoliating Scrub. For the first time since she became a teenager, her skin is clear with only very rare break-outs... she's seventeen now and has been using this brand of products for two years).

I have moderate chest and back acne that I've had a hard time keeping clear. I decided to try this product, but it actually caused me to break out MORE after I started using it. In fact, I used it for about 6 days and watched as my acne got progressively worse and worse. It also made my skin very oily, and I was getting all kinds of acne I never got before. And for the record, I don't have incredibly oily skin to begin with...

Definitely would not recommend. For the future, I will look at a stronger acne wash, something with benzoyl peroxide.

I've battled acne most of my life and I am now 40. My trouble spot has continued to be my back. But I can say that this body scrub has been part of the solution that has finally cleared up the acne on my back! A few things to keep in mind for those who say that this scrub made their acne worse or did not help.

1) There are many different causes of acne and different people's bodies react differently to various chemicals. Perhaps for some people this scrub does in fact irritate their skin. However, keep in mind that acne usually starts with irritation in/under the skin that takes several days to a couple of weeks to manifest as a pimple. It is difficult to know within just a few days or even a couple of weeks if something is helping or hurting your acne. For me it took 4-6 weeks before I could tell that this was actually helping.

2) In addition to the time factor, I found that I had to shower and use this scrub both morning and night. I use a long handled brush to reach my back and scrub well. For a long time I only showered in the morning and my acne would get better at times and worse at others but never did it clear. I finally figured out that the sweat and oil that builds on my body during the day needs to be washed off at night before I go to bed and lay on my back causing more oil and sweat and ultimately continued irritation that would manifest as pimples in the next few days. Of course then it takes weeks for the redness from a pimple to completely go away. I found that showering and using this scrub morning and night has helped tremendously!

After ~3 months of showering and using this scrub religiously each and every morning and night my back is clearer than it has ever been! And I have not had a large pimple in almost 4 weeks now. The residual redness from the older pimples is going away and I can finally begin to see what it looks and feels like to have a clear back.

I cannot guarantee that this scrub or this regimen will work for you but I truly hope that it does. Good luck!

TOP 500 REVIEWERon December 1, 2013
I usually have sensitive skin; one of the few scented products I can still use is body wash (probably because you rinse it off right after you apply it). I don't really have issues with body acne, and never have, but I did have some issues with the appearance of the skin on my upper arms. I figured a body wash of this type would be less likely to aggravate the skin, and might actually lead to an improvement in my skin's appearance (for example, by killing bacteria on the skin's surface). First I tried the regular (orange-colored and unscented) Neutrogena Body Clear wash and it didn't really do all that much for me. The grapefruit wash was a different story. In combination with some Amlactin body lotion, this stuff has made a huge difference in the appearance of the skin on my upper arms.

I happen to like the fragrance, although I understand that's going to differ from person to person. (If you want to know what your own reaction will be, go sniff some in a drugstore before buying!) Because this does contain some plant extracts, colors, and fragrances, it may not be ideal for people who have reacted to other products with the same ingredients (listed below for reference):

Active Ingredients: Salicylic Acid (2%) (Acne Treatment)

Inactive Ingredients: Water, Sodium C14 16 Olefin Sulfonate, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Acrylates Crosspolymer, Cocamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Polyquaternium 7, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Roman Chamomile) Flower Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Carrageenan (Chondrus Crispus), Agar, Neopentyl Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C), Propylene Glycol, C12 15 Alkyl Lactate, Polysorbate 20, Alumina, Butylene Glycol, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydroxide, Benzalkonium Chloride Solution, Sodium Benzotriazole Butylphenol Sulfonate, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Red 30 (CI 73360), Red 40 Lake (CI 16035), Violet 2, Mica, Fragrance

Some of the negative reviews have me puzzled. While I don't dispute that someone might have an allergy to one of the ingredients or a sensitivity to salicylic acid, I'd like to set the record straight about a couple of things.

First, this is a body wash and should be treated as such. This means washing it off in the shower or bath after applying it (and not leaving it on and letting it dry). It is not a spray or a cream. It does not contain any ingredients that cause bleaching effects (I have a PhD in biochemistry and write patent applications for a living so I am familiar with the ingredients and what they do). It is not difficult to get the last portion out of the container; simply store the container upside down when you are getting near the end.

At any rate, I am quite happy with this body wash as it is having the intended effect in my case. I will purchase more when my current bottle is used up.

My 16-year-old daughter used this on problem acne on her back and shoulders with noticeable results by the second day - existing blemishes healed, no new break-out. She's excited. No harsh benzoyl peroxide (active ingredient is salicylic acid). The Body Scrub has the little exfoliating "beads" in it (not mentioned on the bottle) - so it makes skin feel smooth immediately. And the fragrance is very light, clean (gender-neutral).

Also, it's very concentrated, so it goes a long way - making it easily worth the money as far as any body wash goes (and Amazon's price is better than the in-store price).

Of course, everyone is different when it comes to acne treatments - but it worked here.

I love this shower gel not just for its acne treatment qualities, but it also smells great and feels good to bath with it.

It does not dry your skin like other acne treatment products, especially ones that are benzoyl peroxide based. They really dry your skin and have less results.

With Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash I feel very refreshed, acne has gone with very few breakouts sometimes. I had a problem on my back.

I am skeptical of products like this. however i was pleasantly surprised. i am a 20 year old man, and got this product primarily to try and help my shoulder and back acne. While it's not a miracle wash that gets rid off all of your acne, for me it has reduced the number of new breakouts and the acne is much smaller. Also, this wash gives you an incredible clean. Hope this helps as i was very on the fence about trying this product. For the price its certainly worth a try

There has to be a better way to seal this before you ship it. My son said that the body wash was all over the place. He loves the product, but it should not be all over the place when you open the package. You all do sell it for much more than local stores, which I can get it for $7. My son needed it quick so I went through Amazon. I wont do that again.

This is a great product. One the first product I have ever used that has been so effective from day one.
It started working on clearing my skin from day one basically and still do. I love the scent as well. Really nice.
Even being a man didn't mind the fragrance it had lol :)
